Q.1 A client has commissioned your office to prepare a feasibility structural
design report for development a high- rise building in Hong Kong Island.
In the report, your task includes the following:

(a) Sketch with annotation of a typical reinforcement concrete column


details and explain the functions of the different types of
reinforcement shown in the sketches

(b) Describe the main features of shear walls in the context of building
technology.

(c) Sketch with annotation a typical timber column formwork.

Q.2 (a) In building construction industry, there are many different types of
column connection method in Hong Kong. Please illustrate with
annotated sketches a method of splicing precast concrete columns.

(b) Discuss five (5) advantages and three (3) disadvantages of using
precast concrete for civil engineering construction.

(c) Demonstrate four (4) examples of using precast concrete for civil
engineering construction.

Q.3 A basement of one storey is to be constructed by open-cut excavation


method. Describe with the aid of annotated sketches the open cut
excavation method for the construction of basement and discuss the
advantages and limitations of this method.

Q.4 A universal column subject to a lateral load is connected to a concrete


foundation. Suggest and illustrate with annotated sketches a method of
connection by which the joint can resist high bending moment.
