When Noranco Manufacturing Ltd., Pickering,
ON (noranco.com) decided in the late 1990s that
it wanted to move into CNC machining, it didnt
take the aerospace manufacturer long to determine
that the Mazak line of equipment met its needs.
Up until 10 years ago, Noranco focused primar-
ily on sheet metal fabrication, says John Nicholson,
director of new business development with Noran-
co. At that time, the company decided to move
into the machining side of the business. Initially, we
had four machines and they were all Mazak. From
1988 to 2007, we went from having four Mazak
machines to 23 Mazak machines, he says.
However, Norancos roster of Mazak equipment
increased significantly earlier this year, when the
firm acquired two Woodbridge, ON-based aero-
space manufacturers-MBM Tool and Machine
and Excentrotech. Both firms, which are now
divisions of Noranco, were also users of Mazak
equipment. Consequently, Noranco now has 59
Mazak machines including two Palletech systems
at the MBM division. Nicholson estimates that
Norancos investment in Mazak equipment is ap-
proximately $12 million.
Noranco, which has been in business for over
30 years, manufactures high precision machined
parts and fabricated sheet metal parts and assem-
blies for the aerospace industry. Including MBM
and Excentrotech, Noranco has 410 employees at
three facilities totalling 210,000 sq. ft.

anada is a gifted country that
continues to underachieve in
many critical areas including
the economy and innovation, ac-
cording to the Conference Board of
Canadas recent annual benchmark-
ing report.
This years report card on Canada
tells the story of a gifted country un-
derperforming in almost all subjects.
For quite a few years, the Conference
Board has been sounding the alarm
that Canada is slipping to the back of
the gifted class, and that future pros-
perity is at risk.
Thats a hard argument to make
in a country enjoying low unemploy-
ment, a strong dollar, declining debt,
and a booming resource economy.
Canadians tend to be skeptical of an
argument that points to serious chal-
lenges ahead and makes an urgent
case for strategic investment today to
ensure sustainable prosperity tomor-
row, the board warns in its report.
Continues the report, Yet Canadi-
ans see the impact of the world econ-
omy on their quality of life in almost
every days headlines, and are acutely
conscious of developments abroad-
whether in the economy, innovation,
the environment, education and skills,
health, or society. For lessons in what
Canada might do better and what
should be avoided, it is necessary to
look out to the rest of the world.
The report entitled, How Canada
Performs 2008: A Report Card on
Canada, is published annually and
benchmarks Canadas performance
relative to that of 17 industrialized
countries in the Organization for
Economic Cooperation and Devel-
opment (OECD) in six major areas
including Innovation, Economy,
Environment, Education and Skills,
Health, and Society.
The news for Canada, however, isnt
good, notes the board. In the most re-
cent report card, Canada receives B
grades on its economic, education,
health, and social performance, but a
C on environmental performance
and a D on innovation. In almost
every major category of socio-eco-
nomic performance studied, Canadas
performance is slipping, causing it to
fall behind countries that are its peers,
partners, and competitors.
The rules of the game have
changed. In a global economy, with
global supply chains-where compa-
nies spread production around the
globe in search of higher efficiency
and lower costs for each component
of the final product, and compete vig-
orously for international investment
and trade-Canada needs to do better
not only in absolute terms but also
relative to others, the report states.
For example, the report points out
that in the 1970s, the Canadian econ-
omy ranked 3rd amongst the 17 peer
countries but the new report shows
Canada has slipped to 11th place.
Most troubling is that Canadas
ranking on income per capita-a mea-
sure often used as an indicator of a
countrys standard of living or pros-
perity-has dropped significantly.
In the early 1970s, Canadas stan-
dard of living was the envy of most
countries in the world, with its income

per capita ranking behind only Swit-
zerland, the U.S., and Sweden. The
latest benchmarking results show
that five additional countries have
moved ahead of Canada-Norway,
Ireland, the Netherlands, Austria,
and Denmark, the Conference
Board says.
According to the report, there are
three specific trends causing Canada
to lose ground. First, Canada is a
chronic laggard on several important
economic indicators, such as pro-
ductivity. Second, even in some areas
where Canadas performance has
improved, its peer countries are do-
ing better, thus raising the standard
for quality of life. Third, Canada has
failed to keep pace in the growing
competition for global investment.
Likewise, Canada continues to
lag behind global competitors when
it comes to innovation. Canada is
well supplied with good universities,
engineering schools, teaching hospi-
tals, and technical institutes. It pro-
duces science that is well respected
around the world. But, with some
exceptions, Canada does not take
the steps that other countries take
to ensure science can be successfully
commercialized and used as a source
of advantage for innovative compa-
nies seeking global market share.
Canadian companies are thus rarely
at the leading edge of new technol-
ogy and too often find themselves a
generation or more behind the pro-
ductivity growth achieved by global
industry leaders, the report says.
Although Canada is trailing some
of the other performers in the class,
we still have time to learn our les-
sons and bring home a better report
card next time.
For quite a few years, the Conference Board has been sounding the alarm
that Canada is slipping to the back of the gifted class, and that future
prosperity is at risk.

The companys part runs range from prototypes up
to 25 to 30 pieces. Noranco manufactures a variety of
parts for the aerospace sector including stringers and
rails, brackets, components and assemblies, and more.
Typically, Noranco is working with a variety of ma-
terials including different aluminum grades, low and
high carbon alloys, titanium, Inconel, and more. In
general, the firm works to tolerances of plus or mi-
nus 0.005 in. and as close as plus or minus 0.0005 in.
Noranco quality system is certified to both the ISO
9001-2000 and SAE AS9100B standards. As well, the
company has NADCAP accreditation for special pro-
cesses such as fusion welding, torch brazing, resistance
welding, chemical film processing, and painting.
According to Nicholson, there were a number of
reasons behind Norancos initial decision to install
Mazak equipment and its subsequent decision to stay
with Mazak machine tools over the years. When
we bought new machinery over the years, we would
go out and get competitive quotes but we frequently
came back to Mazak primarily because we knew the
equipment and it satisfied our needs. The Mazak ma-
chines lent themselves to the product that we were
making, he says.
In addition, Norancos operators were familiar with
Mazak equipment which made training simple and
straightforward, he adds. We already were familiar
with Mazak machines from a cross-training perspec-
tive. As a result, most of our employees in the shop
could move from one machine to another. Also, be-
cause of the commonality in programming systems, it
gave us the ability to use any of the machines. For ex-
ample, if one machine was down for maintenance, we
wouldnt be stuck for a machine. We wouldnt have
to reprogram or retool (another machine) to put that
product on a different machine.
Nicholson was also impressed with the Mazak con-
trol package. The Mazak machines were user-friend-
ly from a programming perspective. At that time, we
didnt have the CAM system that we are currently us-
ing, which is Mastercam, and Mazaks Mazatrol con-
trol was very user-friendly which allowed our opera-
tors to program directly at the machine. The quality of
the Mazak machines was good for the price.
The firms most recent Mazak machine installations
include an Integrex 300-IV ST multi-tasking machine,
FH5800 horizontal machining center, and two Variax-
is five-axis machining centers. The Mazak equipment
was supplied by A.W. Miller Technical Sales Canada,
Mississauga, ON (awmiller.com). There were different
reasons that prompted each of Norancos most recent
Mazak machine installations, says Nicholson.
For instance, the installation of the new Integrex
300-IV machine actually grew out of Norancos ex-
perience with an earlier model of Integrex that the
firm installed approximately five years ago. We had
bought an Integrex machine without a subspindle ap-
proximately five years ago. We had bought this ma-
chine for one particular job but once we had that
machine we realized that it would lend itself to other
parts (that could be done) more efficiently. The natu-
ral progression was to install the newer version of the
Integrex with the subspindle and lower turret which
gives you even more capability, explains Nicholson.
According to Nicholson, the latest Integrex machine
was installed in order to be more cost effective in mak-
ing a part for a contract that the firm had recently
been awarded. Capacity was an issue. We had recent-
ly received work that we knew we could do more ef-
ficiently on the new Integrex with the subspindle than
we could on any of the other machines we had. The
new Integrex gives us the ability to almost complete a
part in one setup. That was a big driver.
We had received a package of work the customer
was making with a machine that employed a subspin-
dle and they had indicated to us the cycle times they
were achieving using the machine with a subspindle.
Consequently, we based our quote (for the work) on
using a similar machine with a subspindle. When we
decided to (install a machine with a subspindle), we
selected the Mazak Integrex which gave us the same
capabilities as the customers machine, he says.
The Integrex 300-IV multi-tasking machine is nine-
axis and offers main spindle speed of 4,000 rpm and
rotary spindle speed of 12,000 rpm. The main head-
stock features an integral spindle/motor designed for
a wide range of applications, from heavy duty cut-
ting at low speed to high speed cutting of aluminum
and other nonferrous materials at high spindle speeds.
The Integrex marries a high-powered turning center
and full-function machining center to deliver maxi-
mum versatility and throughput for complex parts,
allowing them to be done in one setup. Because of
the multi-tasking capabilities offered by the Integrex,
the user can be competitive on round parts with sec-
ondary operations, fully prismatic parts from solid or
castings, or sculptured parts such as aerospace com-
ponents and molds.
In the case of the Variaxis machines, it was a matter
of Noranco wanting to move into five-axis machining.
We hadnt been involved in five-axis machining pre-
viously and we felt that the next step in the evolution
of our machining cycle was to go to five-axis machin-
ing. The Variaxis machines fit (with the work) we are
doing right now. However, I would suggest that this is
just the beginning stage for us, states Nicholson.
The Variaxis machines have also brought benefits in
terms of setup reduction, he adds. Weve been able to
put parts that previously we were doing on three-axis
machines, with multi setups, on the Variaxis machines
and reduce the number of setups.
As well, the Integrex and Variaxis machines have
expanded the range of work that Noranco can handle
on a cost effective basis. I think the machines have
given us the ability to search for more complicated
work and be able to price the work at a price where
we have more chance of winning the product because
of the extra capabilities that the machines offer.
Noranco, which has installed 59 Mazak machine tools,
estimates that its total investment in Mazak equipment
amounts to $12 million.
At that time, the company decided to move into the machining
side of the business. Initially, we had four machines and they
were all Mazak. From 1988 to 2007, we went from having four
Mazak machines to 23 Mazak machines,

Hardinge collet adaptation chucks (HCAC)
will adapt any spindle to accept C-series
collets, 3J collets, B42/ B65 collets, #22/
#11 B and S collets, style-S master collets
and dead-length collets. It is possible to
increase machining capabilities by substi-
tuting a collet chuck for a jaw chuck for
part diameters up to four in. depending on
the spindle size. The benefits of using col-
let chucks in place of jaw chucks include:
lighter weight, no
hoist required to
mount on spindle;
faster job setup
time than a jaw
chuck; faster accel-

eration times due
to less weight and
smaller diameter; higher spindle speeds
for reduced cycle times; and optimum
gripping with higher precision capabil-
ity. Hardinge OD Sure-Grip dead-length

EBM meets growing work volume with
Bystronic laser
by Jerry Cook
A
rapidly growing volume of work recently prompt-
ed EBM Laser, Saint-Augustin-de-Demaures, QC
to install a new Bystronic laser cutting system.
We decided to install a new laser because we
wanted to add production capacity to keep up with
a growing volume of work, says Gatan St.-Jean,
owner of EBM Laser. To say that EBM Lasers sales are growing quickly
is an understatement. In fact, according to St.-Jean,
the companys sales will have grown from $950,000
in 2001, when EBM began operations, to approxi-
mately $9 million by the end of this year.
EBM, which has 50 employees at its 22,500 sq. ft.
plant, specializes in sheetmetal fabrication ranging
from laser cutting to mechanical assembly for various
customers including the automotive sector, agricultur-
al, general industrial, and more. The companys sales
are 100% domestic.
In addition to laser cutting, EBM Laser provides a vari-
ety of other services including bending, rolling, welding,
CNC machining, and more. The company also builds
mechanical assemblies. Typically, EBM Laser, which is a
low to high volume manufacturer, is working with sheet
steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. With laser cutting,
the company is working to tolerances of plus or minus
0.005 in. For other manufacturing operations, EBM is
working to general shop tolerances.
EBM Laser is currently in the process of attaining
ISO 9001:2000 certification. The firm anticipates be-
coming ISO certified in early 2009.
According to St.-Jean, in order to keep up with its
growing customer base and volume of work, EBM
recently installed a Bystronic BySpeed 3015 laser cut-
ting system. The BySpeed 3015 laser is 4,400 watts
and features a table size of 5 ft. x 10 ft. The BySpeed
provides a number of features and benefits includ-
ing acceleration up to 3G which
reduces production times and in-
creases throughput; and low wear
on the drive due to Bystronics
dynamic Direct Helical Motor
(DHM) drive. The BySpeed 3015
laser cutting system was supplied
by Bystronic Inc., Hauppauge, NY
(bystronic.com). The new BySpeed 3015 laser sys-
tem employs Bystronics ByCell au-
tomated storage system and ByTrans
material handling system. Working
together with the laser system, the
ByCell and ByTrans are designed
to enhance flexibility, optimize ma-
chine utilization, and reduce mate-
rial handling and downtime. In addition to the BySpeed 3015
laser, other Bystronic equipment that
EBM Laser has installed includes a
second 4,000 watt BySpeed 3015
laser system, one Beyeler PR-150
press brake with extended open
height and stroke and one standard
PR-150 press brake. It was EBM Lasers previous ex-
perience with Bystronic equipment
that influenced the firms decision
to install the latest Byspeed laser
system, says St.-Jean. We already
had a Bystronic laser cutting ma-
chine and a Bystronic bending ma-
chine. Since we were satisfied with
the performances we were getting
from both of these machines, we
decided to continue our relation-
ship with Bystronic by buying the
new laser cutting machine.
Since EBM previously had ex-
perience using Bystronic laser cut-
ting systems, training on the new
3015 laser was a relatively simple
and straightforward process, says
St.-Jean. Bystronic provided the
company with specialized training
for programmers, machine opera-
tors and maintenance personnel.
Those training sessions were ex-
tremely helpful and dynamic. The
machines are user friendly and easy
to become familiar with. St.-Jean says that the new BySpeed
laser cutting system has provided
EBM Laser with a variety of ben-
efits including increased productiv-
ity, enhanced quality, improved de-
livery, and overall cost reductions.
The new Bystronic laser cutting
system is definitely meeting expec-
tations in terms of performance.
EBMs new Bystronic laser cutting system has provided
the firm with a variety of benefits including increased
productivity and enhanced quality.

New equipment helps Precimax
meet growing demand
T
he need to keep up with a rapidly growing volume
of work and the desire to upgrade older equipment
recently prompted Precimax Manufacturing Ltd., Ed-
monton, AB to install several new machines.
Business has been very steady for us in the last few
years, says Peter Kool, general manager of Precimax. Our
sales have increased 15% each year from 2005. Weve had
a steady growth line for the past three years. However, you
cant really plan for growth like this. Sometimes it is just
thrust upon you.
As a result, Precimax recently installed several new ma-
chines including a Haas VF-5 machining center, a VDF
Boehringer DUS 560ti flat bed lathe, and two Sodick
AQ55L ram-type EDMs.
Precimax, which started operations in 1976, has 32
employees at its 25,000 sq. ft. facility. The company
manufactures complex, precision components primarily
for the oil and gas sector, nanotechnology companies,
and more. Approximately 40% of the firms sales are
into export markets, says Kool. In general, (our ex-
ports) would be prototype work rather than (high vol-
ume) production, says Kool.
The firms part runs typically range from prototypes and
one-offs up to 100 pieces. In general, Precimax is machining
a variety of materials including aluminum, carbon steels, al-
loy steels, plastics, and more. The company provides a range
of services including CNC milling, CNC turning, conven-
tional milling and turning, wire and die sink EDM, rapid
prototyping services, and more.
Precimax is capable working to
close tolerances of plus or minus
0.0002 in.
According to Kool, there were
various reasons behind the firms
most recent machine installations.
For example, Precimax installed
the VDF flat bed lathe in order to
upgrade older equipment.
We installed the new VDF
lathe to replace older equip-
ment. We wanted to replace
the previous lathes with some-
thing comparable and the
VDF machine was the logical
choice. The VDF offered direct
horsepower and it is a very re-
liable machine, he notes.
The VDF DUS 560ti flat bed lathe features
an automatically indexing turret in combination with a sec-
ond chip production door, which allows full CNC machin-
ing enhancing the use of the machine in medium batch sizes
as an alternative to CNC lathes.
Due to the machines heavy, rigid box-type bed, parts of
nearly all lengths, diameters, weights, and materials can be
machined. The VDF DUS 560ti was supplied by Akhurst
Machinery Ltd., Edmonton, AB (akhurst.com).
In the case of the Haas VF5 machining center, it was a
matter of the machine being an ideal choice for the firms
production needs. We installed the Haas mill because we
had a job that fit perfectly on that machine, says Kool.
The Haas VF5 machining centre offers 10,000 rpm,
40 tools, and 30 hp. The VF-5 has a 40-taper cartridge
spindle driven by a 20 hp vector dual-drive (Y-Delta) mo-
tor. The VF-5 produces either 75 ft.-lb. of torque at a low
1,400 rpm, or 250 ft.-lb. at 450 rpm with the optional
two-speed gearbox. It will also run up to 7,500 rpm in 1.2
seconds for finishing aluminum. The Haas machine was
supplied by Thomas Skinner & Son Ltd., Richmond, BC
(thomasskinner.com).
The two Sodick ram-type EDMs, continues Kool, were
installed in order to expand the firms already extensive
EDM capabilities. The Sodick EDMs were supplied by
Spectra Machine Tool Ltd., Edmonton, AB (spectrama-
chines.com).
Operator training on all the new equipment was relative-
ly simple and straightforward, says Kool.
