Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 9

(Angle of Depression)

I. Objectives
Cognitive: The learner will identify the angle of depression.
Psychomotor: The learner will solve word problems involving angle of depression.
Affective: Recognize the importance of angle of depression in real life situation.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Angle Of Depression
B. Concepts:

The angle of depression is formed when the observer is higher than the object he/she is looking at. When
an observer looks at an object that is situated at a distance lower than the observer, an angle is formed below
the horizontal line drawn with the level of the eye of the observer and line joining object with the observer’s
eye.

D. Materials: Laptop(PPT), Chalk, Blackboard

III. Procedure
Teacher Students’ Response
A. Activity
1. Drill
Evaluate each trigonometric function using
calculator. Round of to the nearest hundred
thousandths.
1. Sin 38º 1. 0.61566
2. Tan 45º 2. 1
3. Tan 12º 3. 0.12256
4. Cos 67º 4. 0.39073
5. Cos 12º 5. 0.97815

2. Review
A. What was the last topic is all about? A. The last topic is all about angle of elevation.
B. What is angle of elevation? B. An angle of elevation is defined as an angle
between the horizontal plane and line of sight
from the observer's eye to some object above.
C. How many trigonometric ratios we have? C. 6. Sine, Cosine, Tangent, Cosecant, Secant,
What are they? Cotangent.

D. Can we use these 6 trigonometric functions in D. No because only Sine, Cosine and Tangent is
our calculator? Why? only available in our calculator.
3. Motivation
“I Can Measure You, You Can Measure Me”
Have you ever tried when you are at the top
of the building and you found your friend was
on the street? And then your friend also seen
you at the top of the floor?

Question:
1. Can both of you can measure your own 1. Yes
distances?
2. What kind of angle is formed by your 2. Angle of elevation
friend does in finding solutions for right
triangle? 3. Angle of depression
3. What kind of angle is formed by you in
finding solutions for right triangle?

4. Lesson Proper

The angle of depression is formed when the observer

is higher than the object he/she is looking at. When
an observer looks at an object that is situated at a
distance lower than the observer, an angle is formed
below the horizontal line drawn with the level of the
eye of the observer and line joining object with the
observer’s eye.

B. Analysis
1. Let c = the distance of the boat from the
1. From the top of the vertical cliff that overlooks

the ocean, a person measures the angle of
depression of a boat at the sea as 9º. The height
142m 142m
of the cliff is 142 m. How far is the boat from the Tan 9° = c= = 896.55 m.

base of the cliff? Therefore, the distance of the boat from the
base of the cliff is 896.55 m.

above the ground. The distance along the ground
from the airplane to the airport is 6 kilometers. 4

What is the angle of depression from the airplane 6
to the airport? tan θ0.6667
θtan–1 0.6667
θ33.69

Therefore, the angle of depression from the

airplane to the airport is 33.69º.

depression? 6. Yes. By using the clinometer.
5. Can we really use these topic in real life?
6. Can we measure angles in real life situations?
D. Application 1. Let w be the width of the river

1. A building stands on the bank of a river. A man tan 30º = 12
observes from a corner of the roof of the building, the w
foot of a electric post just on the opposite bank. If the w = 12
= 20.784 meters approximately.
angle of depression of the foot of the light post at your tan 30 º
eye is 30° and the height of the building is 12 meters,
what is the width of the river? Therefore, the width of the river is 20.784 meters.

2. An observer on a cliff 1000 dm above sea level sights 2. Let d = y - x

Therefore, the distance of between two ships is 668

dm.

IV. Evaluation
Solve the following problems involving the angle of depression.
1. From the top of a fire tower, a forest ranger sees his partner on the ground at an angle of depression of
40º. If the tower is 45 feet in height, how far is the partner from the base of the tower, to the nearest tenth
of a foot?
2. A submarine starts on the surface, and dives at an angle of 13º to the surface. It goes diagonally a distance
of 890 meters before reaching the bottom. How deep is the water where the submarine reaches the
bottom?
