NAME: _______________________ SECTION: _______________ First Term: x Second Term: -6

Substitute x for a and 5 for b. (x - 6)2 = x2 - 2(x)(6) + 62

MATHEMATICS 7
(x - 6)2 = x2 - 12x + 36
Special Product: SQUARE OF A BINOMIAL
So, the expansion of (x - 6)2 is ANSWER = x2 - 12x + 36
Worksheet given in this section will be much useful for the students who would like to practice
problems on finding square of a binomial. Problem 3 : Expand : (5x + 3)2

The square of a binomial is always a trinomial.  It will be helpful to memorize these patterns for Solution : (5x + 3)2 is in the form of (a + b)2
writing squares of binomials as trinomials.
Comparing (a + b)2 and (5x + 3)2, we get
(a+b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2 a = 5x b = 3
(a−b)2 = a2 − 2ab + b2
Write the expansion for (a + b)2.

Steps in Squaring a Binomial (a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2

1. Square the first term. Substitute 5x for a and 3 for b.

2. Twice the product of the first and second term. (5x + 3)2 = (5x)2 + 2(5x)(3) + 32

3. Square the last term. (5x + 3)2 = 25x2 + 30x + 9

Problem 1 : Expand : (x + 1)2 same as (x+1) ( x+ 1) So, the expansion of (5x + 3)2 is ANSWER : 25x2 + 30x + 9

Solution : Problem 4 : Expand : (5x - 3)2

(x + 1)2 is in the form of (a + b)2 Solution :

Comparing (a + b)2 and (x + 1)2,substitute the following value, we get (5x - 3)2 is in the form of (a - b)2

a = x b = 1 Comparing (a - b)2 and (5x - 3)2, we get

Write the formula / expansion for (a + b)2. a = 5x b = 3

(a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2 Write the expansion for (a - b)2.

Substitute x for a and 2 for b. (a - b)2 = a2 - 2ab + b2

(x + 1)2 = x2 + 1(x)(1) + 12 Substitute 5x for a and 3 for b.

(x + 1)2 = x2 + 1x + 1 (5x - 3)2 = (5x)2 - 2(5x)(3) + 32

So, the expansion of (x + 1)2 is (5x - 3)2 = 25x2 - 30x + 9

Answer: x2 + x + 1 So, the expansion of (5x - 3)2 is ANSWER: 25x2 - 30x + 9

Problem 2 : Expand : (x - 6)2 same as ( x - 6) ( x - 6 ) Problem 5 : Expand : (5m2 - 3)2 Same as (5m2 -3 ) ( 5m2 -3 )

Solution : Given: (x - 6)2 Solution : (5m2 - 3)2

First Term : 5m2 Second Term : -3 8. (x – 5)2
1. Square the first term (5m2) (5m2) = 25m4
2. Twice the product of the first and second term 2 ( 5m2) (-3) = -30m2 9. (x + 4)2
3. Square the last term/ second term (-3) (-3) = 9
10. (x – 3)(x + 3)
So, the expansion of (5x - 3)2 is ANSWER: 25m4 – 30m2 + 9
11. (x + 4)(x – 4)

More Examples: 12. (a + 5)(a – 5)

Multiply using the preceding rule.
13. (a – 6)(a + 6)
First term squared Twice their product Last term squared Answer

6. (x – 5)2 = x2 + 2(x) (-5) + 25 = x 2 – 10x + 25 14. (2x + 5)(2x – 5)

7. (x + 2) 2
= x 2
+ 2(x)(2) +4 2
= x + 4x + 4
15. (3x + 5)(3x – 5)
8. (2x – 3)2 = 4x2 + 2(2x)(–3) +9 = 4x 2 – 12x + 9

9. (5x – 4)2 = 25x2 + 2(5x)(–4) + 16 = 25x 2 – 40x + 16
