To do well in this module, you need to remember and do the following:
1. Read and understand the concepts of the topic.
2. Answer the activities with honesty.
3. Follow the direction carefully.
4. Solve with understanding and accuracy.

LESSON 1: MEASUREMENT

Measurement is the process by which human beings obtain useful quantitative

information about the physical quantities and phenomena such as the weight, area, volume,
length, temperature, time and distance. Measurement involves: NON-STANDARD UNITS OF
MEASURE and STANDARD UNITS OF MEASURE.

A long time ago, since time began the units of measure that was being used is the non-
standard units of measure because they are more focused on their convenience rather than
accuracy. They are using hands, feet and arms to measure things.

Refer to page 135 of your mathematics textbook for more explanations and examples.

Lesson 1.1: THE STANDARD UNITS OF MEASURE

As time goes by the standard units of measure was develop and these are: English
System and the Metric System. The English System and metric system are being used in the
United states but insome other countries only the metric system is being used.

Table1: English System of Measurement

Quantity Unit Symbol Equivalent
Length inch in ( ’’ ) 0.0833 ft.
foot ft ( ’ ) 12 in
yard yard 3 ft
Mile mi 5 280 ft
Weight Ounce oz 0.0625 ft
pound lb 16 oz
Ton yard 2 000 lb
Capacity Pint pt 2 cups
Quart qt 2 pt
Gallon gal 4 qt

Page | 3
Q2 | wks1&2 |Mathematics 7

Example: How many inches are in 2 yards?

Solution:

Explanation:
1 yard times 3 ft divided by 1 yard is equal to 3 ft because we cancel out the yard. 3ft
times 12 inches divided by 1 ft is equal to 36 inches per 1 yard. Since the questions talks about
2 yards so we need to multiple 36 inches by 2 to get the final answer.

For more example, refer to page 138 of your mathematics textbook.

Lesson 1.2: THE METRIC SYSTEM

Metric system is the standard unit of measure that is widely used for measuring. It is
based on decimals. It uses Greek and Latin prefixes to make convertion from one unit to
another more easier. A prefix is a power of 10 exponent that preceds to the unit. To illustate
what is meant by a prefix, look at the table as well as the examples on page 139 of your
mathematics textbook.

Example: How many watts are there in a

a. kilowatt? b. megawatt?

Solution:

a. A kilo is . Hence, a kilowatt is 1000 watts.

b. A mega is . Hence, a megawatt is 1 000 000 watts.

Table2: Equivalent Units of English system and Metric System

English System Multiply by Metric System
inch 2.54 cm Centimeter (cm)
yard 0.9144 m Meter (m)
mile 1.609 km Kilometer (km)
pound 0.4536 kg Kilogram (kg)
gallon 3.7854 L Liter (L)
Fahrenheit (°F-32) Celsius

To convert english system into metric system, just multiply the given values of the english
system to the corresponding values given above.

Example: Convert the following measures to metric system.

a. b.

Solution:

a.

b. (°F-32) Substitute 90° to F.

(90° -32)= (58°)= 32.222

Lesson 1.3: THE SI BASE UNITS OF MEASURE

This unit of measure comes from French that is also based on the Metric System.

Refer to page 146 of your mathematics textbook for you to see

this table clearly. This table is a great help if we will convert metric
system to another.

Converting Untis from One Metric to Another

Complete this chart using a calculator.

Base Unit
125
1.5
0.32

Since the SI base units of measure is also based on the metric system, so we will use
the properties of the metric system. In other words, we can also use the Greek and Latin
prefixes. For you to check your answers from the above activity, take a look at the figure below.

In coverting the given base unit to another units, simply follow the table above. When we
are coverting the base unit into a bigger or larger unit,we divide by the indicated power of 10
and the answer gets smaller. When we are converting the base unit into a smaller unit, we
multiply by the indicated power of 10 and the answer gets larger.

Since the prefix deca- is , it means that we will divide the base unit by 10. The prefix
hecto- is , it means that we will divide the base unit by 100.

The prefix deci- is equal to , so we will multiply the base unit by 10 and if the prefix
is centi- then we will multiply the base unit by 100 since it is equivalent to .

Let us now check your answers

Lesson 1.4: FUNDAMENTAL QUANTITIES AND THEIR UNITS

 LENGTH
Length is a measure of distance, it’s basic unit in the SI system is meter (m).On page
148 of your mathematics textbook, you can see the examples of metric measurement of length.

Example 1: Convert 450mm to cm using the SI system.

We can also convert meter into a larger or smaller unit. Since we started from the
smaller unit down to the larger one. It means that we will divide the given value by the power of
10.

Base Unit
(meter)
0.00045 0.0045 0.045 0.45 4.5 45 450

The easiest way to use this table is to add 0 to 10 every move you take. In this example,
we convert the milliliter to centimeter, meters and so on. As you can see in the table the
centimeter becomes 45. Why? Simply divide 450 by 10 since we are MOVING ONE STEP from
the milliliter. On the other hand, on the decimeter part it becomes 4.5 since we divide it by 100.
Why 100? Since we MOVE TWO STEPS AWAY FROM MILLILITER. On the part of the meter, it
becomes 0.45 since we divide 450 by 1000.

The number of zeroes depends upon the number of steps we take away from the given
unit. Take note that if we will convert from a smaller unit to larger one, we will use DIVISION.
But if we will convert from a larger unit to a smaller one then we will use MULTIPLICATION.

 MASS/WEIGHT
Mass and weight are used in the same measure but they are not exactly the same. Its SI
standard unit is kilogram (kg). For more information about mass and weight, open your
mathematics textbook on page 149-150.

 TIME
We all know what time is and how to use it. When we talk about time, its unit is seconds
(s). There are following equivalence that are used in time measurement. Refer to page 151 of
your mathematics textbook.

Time is recorded by either a 12-hour clock or the 24-hour clock. In the 12-hour clock we
have AM and PM in which AM is from midnight to noon and PM is from noon to just before
12midnight. In a 24-hour clock, we don’t have AM and PM but instead, we are using numbers
from 1 to 24.

Example 1: How many hours are there in a week?

 TEMPERATURE
Temperature is a physical quantity that expresses hot and cold. It is the manifestation of
thermal energy, present in all matter, which is the source of the occurrence of heat, a flow of
energy, when a body is in contact with another that is colder. Temperature is measured with a
thermometer and its metric unit is degree Celsius . Another unit of temperature is the
degree Fahrenheit. To know the difference between the two units, open your book on page 153
and take a look at the given figure, examples are also shown on that page.

The standard unit of are is square units such as square centimeters and square meters
.

Area of a Square: If is the length of the side of a square, then its area is or side
times side.

Example: Find the area of a square whose side is 10cm.

Since the length of the sides of the square are the same so it means that all side are
10cm. Now, use the formula to solve.

10 cm

Area of a Rectangle: If is the length of a rectangle and w is its width, then its area is

Example: Find the area of the rectangle whose length is 5cm and the width is 2cm.
