intelligently and creatively to the

text listened to
d. EN10LC-IIIb-16.1: Distinguish
the important points from less
important ones in any listening
text

Let’s study how we should evaluate

listening text as we have done a while
ago.

Listening texts may vary from songs,

conversations, speeches and etc.

Evaluating listening texts requires a

careful process. Aside from
understanding the content portrayed in
listening text, it also requires criteria to
be used to carefully assess the listening
material.
Jennifer, kindly read the presented
criteria in assessing listening texts.
The criteria in assessing listening texts are
the following;
1. Fluency
2. Tone
3. Pitch
4. Volume
Thank you, Jennifer. There are eight
criteria in evaluating listening texts. But
for now, let us focus in these four.

Fluency focuses on the smoothness,

effort of which the language is spoken.
While listening to the song, do you
think the singer is fluent?
How do you say so? Yes, Kennedy?
The singer is fluent since he pronounced the
lyrics of the song well.
Very Good!

Tone is how you sound when you say

words out. Why is it important for an
individual to watch their tone when
talking? Yes, Emar?
It is important to always watch your tone
because it has the power to bring confusion
to your listener.
Excellent! Now, who can describe the
emotional tone of the song? Go ahead,
Maureen.
I think the singer portrayed sad tone
because it talks about the truth happening
in our nature today which is as time goes
by, nature is getting unhealthy because of
what humans are doing and that is the truth
portrayed by the singer in his song.
Thank you for that wonderful thought,
Maureen.

Okay. Next, Pitch.

Pitch involves the highness or lowness
of the speaker’s voice.

The song, “Truth to power”, does the

highness and lowness visible to the
singer’s voice?
Yes, Luna?
Yes, ma’am. It very clear, especially when
the singer’s pitch drops at the end of the
sentence and went up toward the end of the
statements.
Very good! That’s correct because pitch
also involves the concept of intonation.

Lastly, the Volume.

Lyn joy, kindly read what is being
presented.
Volume deals with the loudness or softness
of the speaker’s voice indicating emphasis
on the important points.
Now, what are the words you notice the
sound of the singer’s voice change to
emphasize some words?
S1: Truth to power
S2: years
S3: see
S4: feel
S5: believer
Do you think that what you have
mentioned are the important points the
singer wants to convey to his listener?
How do you say so? Yes
Riva
Yes, ma’am because we discussed that
when a speaker’s voice increased in a
certain word, meaning he is giving stress
and emphasis to the important points of the
song.
Very Good!

Thus, the singer demonstrated various

styles in the change of his voice’s
volume. Do you agree?
Yes, ma’am.
Do you have any questions or
clarifications?
None, ma’am.
Through the criteria in evaluating
listening texts, we can now summarize
the central message of the song. Am I
right?
Yes, ma’am.
Now, the question is, what does the song
wants to convey? Yes, Ismael?
The song wants to spread awareness to all
of us humans to be aware of the issue of
climate change and start taking action for
the sake of our planet.

Very good, Ismael. How about you

The song depicts our earth in human-like
Vida?
terms as an aging loved one who reminds us
of the increasingly weak state and being
vulnerable to all assault of humanity.

That’s a good point, Vida. Thank you.

Using the Fluency, Tone, Volume and
Pitch, we discover that the message of
the song is asking human to show love
and gratitude to our earth by taking
actions to change the vulnerable state of
our earth.
