General Directions: Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

“Soapy Stress”
What you need: 1 regular-size bar of soap (preferably any soap that is soft enough to break
easily), pen and paper
Safety Issues: Do not rub eyes after handling soap. Rinse hands after handling soap.
What to do:
Part 1. Tension
1. Soap is a good model since you are not strong enough to break rocks.
2. You are going to pull a bar of soap apart but you need not to twist or bend the soap, just pull
(for example, see Figure 1). Do and answer the guide questions that follow.

Guide Questions:
1. Take a picture of the soap and how it was broken. Draw arrows for the forces acting on the
soap to show that you know it was tensional stress.
2. How will you describe tensional stress? (Provide at least two sentences.)
3. What is a real-life example of tensional stress?

Part 2. Compression
1. You use one of the smaller pieces that resulted from the tensional demonstration.
2. This time, you will press or squeeze the soap into smaller pieces, using
either one or both of your hands (for example, see Figure 2).
Guide Questions:
1. Take a picture of the soap and how it was broken. Draw arrows for the forces acting on the
soap to show that you know it was compressional stress.
2. How will you describe compressional stress? (Provide at least two sentences.)
3. What is a real-life example of compressional stress.
