Anatomy Small Intestine

The small intestine consists of three segments - the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. The jejunum makes up the proximal 40% of the small intestine while the ileum is the distal 60%. The jejunum has more prominent folds and a thicker wall than the ileum. Lymphoid follicles called Peyer's patches are located throughout the small intestine but are most prominent in the ileum. The small intestine receives its blood supply from the celiac artery and superior mesenteric artery and drains into the superior mesenteric vein.

SMALL INTESTINE Jejunum and Ileum

Dr. Edzelito T. Legaspi, FSGS, FPCS o No distinct anatomic landmark demarcates the jejunum
from the ileum
o Tubular structure o Proximal 40% of the jejunoileal segment is defined as
o Extends from the pylorus to the cecum jejunum
o 4-6m o Distal 60% as the ileum
o Three segments: Duodenum, Jejunum, and ileum o Ileum is demarcated from the cecum by the ileocecal valve

Small intestine (cont…)

o Contains internal mucosal folds known as plicae circularis
or valvulae conniventes
o Jejunum has larger diameter, thicker wall, more prominent
Duodenum plicae circulares, less fatty mesentery and longer vasa
o Most proximal segment recta
o Retroperitoneum immediately adjacent to the head and o Mucosa contains aggregates of lymphoid follicles
inferior border of the body of the pancreas o Follicles located in the ileum are prominent and are
o Demarcated from the stomach by the pylorus and from the designated as Peyer’s patches
jejunum by the ligament of Trietz
Blood Supply

ARTERIES
o Derives its arterial blood from branches of both celiac and
the superior mesenteric arteries
o Superior mesenteric artery – distal duodenum, jejunum,
and ileum

VEINS
o Venous drainage occurs via the superior mesenteric vein

LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
o Lymphatic drainage occurs through lymphatic vessels
coursing parallel to corresponding arteries
o Mesenteric lymph nodes to the cisterna chyli, then through
the thoracic duct ultimately into the left subclavian vein

NERVE SUPPLY
o Parasympathetic and sympathetic innervation is derived
from the vagus and splanchnic nerves, respectively
