Applied Physics Assignment

This document contains an assignment with two physics questions. Q1 asks about the direction of current in a coil in a magnetic field and the work required to rotate the coil 90 degrees. Q2 provides values for the speed and kinetic energy of a proton experiencing a magnetic force in a field. The responses show the calculations and solutions to both questions.

NAME: AQIB SHAH CLASS ID: CU-2219-2021
Assignment #04 (CLO 02 / PLO 01)
Q1: Figure a, shows a circular coil with 500 turns, an area A of 2.52 x10-4 m2, and a current of
200 mA. The coil is at rest in a uniform magnetic field of magnitude B =0.95 T, with its
magnetic dipole moment initially aligned with B
(a) In Fig. a, what is the direction of the current in the coil?
(b) How much work would the torque applied by an external agent have to do on the coil to rotate it
90° from its initial orientation, so that 𝜇is perpendicular to B and the coil is again at rest?

Q2: A proton traveling at 23.0° with respect to the direction of a magnetic field of strength 2.60
mT experiences a magnetic force of 6.50 x 10-17 N. Calculate (a) the proton’s speed and (b)
its kinetic energy in electron-volts.
