FM 1311-Specification of Split Case Pumps For FIRE

The pump must have a minimum rated pressure of 40psi. It must have drain plugs of at least 0.5 inches made of corrosion resistant material. Water passageways must be at least 12.7mm for pumps over 500GPM, 9.5mm for 100-500GPM pumps, and 6.3mm for pumps under 100GPM. Calculations must show the closed impeller will not contact the casing under shut off conditions. The pump must not exceed 140% of rated pressure at shut-off or produce less than 65% of rated head at 150% rated capacity.

FM 1311- Specification of Split Case Pumps for FIRE

1. The pump shall have minimum of rated pressure of 40psi.

2. Pump casing should be designed as such the repairing should be done without disturbing the suction and
discharge pipe of the pumps.
3. Drain should be provided in casing.
4. Drain plug should be atleast of 0.5 inch made of corrosion resistant material.
5. Water passage way should be atleast of 12.7MM for pump with rated capacity greater than 500GPM & 9.5MM
for 100 to 500GPM pumps and 6.3MM for pumps less than 100GPM.
6. Closed type impeller should be used. Calculations should be shown that the impeller will not contact the casing
even at shut off head operations.
7. Maximum torsional shearing stress shall not exceed 30% of elastic limit in tension, 18% of ultimate tensile
strength of the shaft material to safeguard against failure.
8. Shaft sleeve should be of hard bronze or other corrosion resistant material.
9. Hydraulically balanced seals should be used.
10. Seal face shall be made of:
• Resin impregnated carbon graphite on silicon carbide or tungsten carbide.
• Silicon carbide on silicon carbide.
11. Secondary sealing faces shall be of ethylene-propylene or fluorocarbon rubbers.
12. Seal metal parts shall be made of SS304 or higher material.
13. Seal flushing should be provided equivalent to Plan 11.
14. Bearing of atleast having 5000 operating hours at maximum load should be used.
15. Couplings shall be not elastomeric type.
16. Circulation relief valve of ¾ inch should be used for pumps of rated capacity < 2500GPM, 1 inch for pumps of
rated capacity of 3000 to 5000GPM. Relief valve shall be piped to the pump’s suction or in pipeline supply
connection.
17. Nameplate made of corrosion resistant material and should include the information like:- manufacturer’s name
and address, pump model, pump serial number, rated flow, rated head, rated speed, impeller diameter,
maximum BHP, FM approval certification mark, manufacturer & serial number of the driver and controller.
18. An arrow indicating the direction of rotation of the pump shall be casted in the casing of the pump.
19. The following calculation shall be submitted for the FM approval:
• Maximum torsional shearing stress.
• Mechanical seal and pump compatibility
• Bearing life calculations
• Shaft deflection and impeller clearance
• Radial load calculations
20. The pump shall not exceed 140% of the rated pressure even at shut-off point. The shut-off head not be less than
99% of the maximum head.
21. The pump shall produce not less than 65% from the rated head at 150% of the rated capacity.
22. To generate the curve, a maximum of 10 readings in which 2 must be taken at maximum power of the pump. The
speed should be +4% of the rated speed.
23. No leakage should be found in a 5 minute test when hydrostatically tested at the rated pressures.
24. The hydrostatic testing pressure shall not be less than 250PSI.
