Sl. SECTION-A (OBJECTIVE TYPE) Marks

No. QUESTION
1 Read the passage given below and answer the following questions:
Colloidal solutions exhibit various properties like colligative properties, tyndall effect,
colour, Brownian movement, charge, electrophoresis, coagulation etc. The colligative
properties of colloidal solution are different from the true solution. Tyndall effect is
used to distinguish between a colloidal and true solution. The two factors, charge
and solvation of the colloidal particles make the colloidal sols stable.

In the following questions (i) to (iv) a statement of assertion is followed by a

statement of reason. Choose the correct answer out of the following choices.
A) Assertion and reason both are correct statements and reason is correct
explanation for assertion.
B) Assertion and reason both are correct statements but reason is not correct
explanation for assertion.
C) Assertion is correct statement but reason is wrong statement.
D) Assertion is wrong statement but reason is correct statement.
i) Assertion: The values of colligative properties of colloidal solutions are of small 1
order as compared to values shown by true solutions.
Reason: Colloidal particles form bigger aggregates.
ii) Assertion: Colloidal solutions do not show Brownian motion. 1
Reason: Brownian motion is responsible for the stability of the sols.
iii) Assertion: Fe3+ ion can be used for coagulation of As2S3 sol. 1
Reason: Fe3+ ion reacts with As2S3 to give Fe2S3.
iv) Assertion: The stability of lyophobic sols is due to the presence of charge on the 1
colloidal particles.
Reason: Colloidal particles exhibit tyndall effect.
OR
Assertion: Aqueous gold colloidal solution is red in colour.
Reason: The colour rises due to scattering of light by colloidal gold particles.
2 Read the passage given below and answer the following questions:
An alkyl halide with β-hydrogen atoms when reacts with a base or a nucleophile
has two competing routes: Substitution (S N
1
or S N
2
) and elimination. The route
which will be taken up depends upon the nature of the alkyl halide, strength, and
size of the base/nucleophile and reaction conditions. Thus a bulkier nucleophile will
prefer to act as a base and abstract a proton rather than approaching a tetravalent
carbon atom (steric reason) and vice versa. A primary alkyl halide will prefer a SN2
reaction, a secondary halide- SN2 or elimination depending upon the strength of
base/nucleophile and a tertiary halide- SN1 or elimination depending upon the
stability of carbocation or the more substituted alkene.
