Problems to Work
1. A man owns a triangular lot on the corner of two intersecting streets which intersects an angle of 62º. The
frontage of one street is 200 m and the other is 150 m. If the land is worth P100.00 per sq. m and the man
has P 120,000 available to increase the size of the lot, by how much can he lengthen the 150 m frontage?
(Ans. 13.6 meters)
2. A corner lot of land is 35 m on one street and 25 m on the other street. The angle between the two lines of
the street being 82º25’. The other two lines of the lot are respectively perpendicular to the lines of the streets.
What is the worth of the lot at P 180 per sq. m? (Ans. P136,728.00)
3. The flagship of the Naval fleet guarding the Sulu sea is 4 nautical miles from the destroyer, 3 nautical miles
from the cruiser and 5 nautical miles from the battleship. The flagship is within the triangle formed by the
three ships. If the line connecting the destroyer and the cruiser is perpendicular and equal to the line joining
the cruiser and the battleship, determine a) distance between the destroyer and the cruiser b) the distance
between the destroyer and the battleship. (Ans. a. 6.07 naut. miles; b. 8.58 naut. Miles)
4. The angle of elevation of a wireless telegraph tower is observed from a point on the horizontal plain on which
it stands. At a point 60 meters nearer, the angle of elevation is the compliment of the former. At a point 20
meters nearer still, the angle of elevation is double the first. How high is the tower? (Ans. 74.16 meters)
5. The angle of elevation of the top of the tower “A” from the foot of tower “B” is twice the angle of elevation of
the top of tower “B” from the foot of tower “A”. At a point midway between the two towers, the angles of
elevations of the top of the towers are complimentary. If the two towers are 120 meters apart, what are the
heights of the towers? (Ans. A= 90 m ; B = 40 m)
6. A vertical pole consists of two parts, each one half of the whole pole. At a point in the horizontal plane which
passes through the foot of the pole and 36 meters from it, the upper half of the pole subtend an angle whose
tangent is 1/3. How high is the pole? (Ans. h =72 m ; h = 36 m)
7. A 40 m high tower stands vertically on a hillside (sloping ground) which makes an angle of 18º with the
horizontal. The tree also stands vertically up the hill from the tower. An observer on top of the tower finds the
angle of depression of the top of the tree to be 26º and the bottom of the tree to be 38º. Find the height of the
tree. (Ans. h = 10.62 meters)
8. A clock has a dial face 12 inches in radius. The minute hand is 9 inches long while the hour hand is 6 inches
long. The plane of rotation of the minute hand is 3 inches above the plane of rotation of the hour hand. Find
the distance between the tips of the hands of the clock at 5:40 A.M. (Ans. 9.17 inches)
9. A flea named Garemono walk from corner A to Corner C of a 3m cubical room through the wall number 1,
then thru the ceiling, then to the opposite wall number 2 of the room. Determine the shortest route and the
time consumed by Garemono upon reaching corner C. Assuming that the average speed of Garemono is
one meter per minute. (Ans. d = 9.49 meters ; T = 9.49 minutes)
10. A horizontal cylindrical tank has an inside diameter of 5 ft. and an inside length of 18 ft. and supplies bunker
fuel to a power plant. Oil level was at first 45 inches below the top of the tank. After one week, the oil level
rose 36.2 inches. How many gallons of fuel were consumed if the tank received 27,000 liters of fuel during
the week? (Ans. 5,247.82 gallons)
11. Two chords of lengths 9 cm and 12 cm are drawn from a common point A along the circumference of the
circle. If each of the ends of these chords is connected to each of the end points of the diameter, find the
diameter of the circle. (Ans. 15 cm.)
12. A lawn is in the form of a 30º right triangle with a long leg 67 meters long. At the long leg is a peg to which a
goat named Halipap is tied such that the farthest distance its mouth can reach is 30 meters. If the peg is 15
meters from the shorter leg, find the area on the lawn that Halipap can graze. (Ans. A = 1,055.79 sq. m.)
13. A fenced triangular garden has a dimension of 24 m, 20 m and 12 m. At a corner “A” which is the common
point of the two longer sides is a peg where the goat named Gatilyo is tied. The length of rope is 36 meters
and Gatilyo is placed outside the fence. Determine the area Gatilyo can graze outside the fence BC and
within the area bounded by the lines formed by extending the lines of the fence BC and AC. ( Ans. 207.3 sq. m.)
14. A proposed reinforced concrete bridge is to be constructed passing through the center of a circular lake.
From a point A outside the lake and at a distance 1 km from the embankment of the bridge and collinear with
both embankment and the bridge, a detour or temporary road was constructed in a direction which is tangent
to the periphery of the lake and passes through a point B which is 3 km from the embankment of the bridge at
the other end. If the route from B to the bridge is perpendicular to the bridge, determine the length of the
proposed concrete bridge. ( Ans. 3 km.)
15. The figure shows four circles which are tangent to each other. Determine the radius of the smallest circle
which is tangent to the two small circles and the big circle. AF = 4 cm; DE = 2 cm; BF = 6 cm. (Ans. r = 1.7 cm.)
16. Ship “A” started sailing N 40º32’E at the rate of 3 mph. After 2 hours, ship “B” started from the same port
going S45º18’E at the rate of 4 mph. After how many hours will the second ship be exactly south of ship “A”?
(Ans. t = 4.38 hours after B departed)
17. A port “A” and a lighthouse B are 20 miles apart. The lighthouse lies due east of the port. A ship sailing at 8
mph leave from the port on the direction going to the lighthouse at the same time that another ship sailing 6
mph leaves the lighthouse on a southwest course. After both ships sailed for 1.5 hours, the two ships are
nearest to each other at a distance of 8.54 miles. Find the bearing of the second ship from the first when they
are nearest. (Ans. S24º9’E)
