(An Autonomous Institution)

Second Year, B.Tech (Computer Engineering)
End Semester Examination (Online), Summer – 2021 (AY 2020-21)

Course Code: 2CP07 Course Title: Computer Networks

Date: 21.05.2021 Time: 10.30 am to 011:45 am Maximum Marks: 30
Instructions:
 Exam will be conducted by ‘Online’ Mode through MS Teams only.
 Each section must be attempted in a separate answer books. The format of answer sheet is
available on website ‘notice board’.
 Write ID No., Name, Course Code, Course Title, Date of Exam, Signature and Page Nos. on
each answer page in the ‘title block’ provided in format.
 Students have to upload answer sheet through “pdf file” for both the sections separately in MS
Teams within the stipulated time. Students will get additional 20 minutes to upload answer
sheet pdf file for each section. Refer the detailed instructions on website ‘notice board’.
 Give the name to each pdf file as: “ID No._Course Code_Section No._Summer 2021_Date”
(For example, 12AB001_3CD01_Section2_Summer21_03.5.21)
 Numbers in the square brackets to the right indicate maximum marks.
 The text just below marks indicates the CO(s) followed by the Bloom’s level of the question,
i.e., R: Remember, U: Understand, A: Apply, N: Analyze, E: Evaluate, C: Create

Section – I
Q.1 (A) Answer the following questions (Any Five) [05]
1,2
U
1 When troubleshooting computer network problems, what common hardware-
related problems can occur?
2 What is meant by 127.0.0.1 and localhost?
3 Define Static IP and Dynamic IP?
4 What is the use of a default gateway?
5 Assume five devices are arranged in a mesh topology. How many cables are
needed? How many ports are needed for each device?
6 Performance is inversely related to delay. When you use the Internet, which of
the following applications are more sensitive to delay?
a. Sending an e-mail
b. Copying a file
c. Surfing the Internet
(B) What is the difference between Hub, Switch, and Router? [02]
2R
(C) A sender uses the Stop-and-Wait ARQ protocol for reliable transmission of [03]
frames. Frames are of size 2000 bytes and the transmission rate at the sender is 1,2
40 Kbps (1Kbps = 1000 bits/second). Size of an acknowledgement is 100 bytes U
and the transmission rate at the receiver is 8 Kbps. The one-way propagation
delay is 50 milliseconds. Assuming no frame is lost, What will be the sender
throughput in bytes/second?
Q2 (A) Compare and contrast byte-stuffing and bit-stuffing. Which technique is used in [03]
byte-oriented protocols? Which technique is used in bit-oriented protocols? 1,2
A bit-stuffing based framing protocol uses an 8-bit delimiter pattern of U
Page 1 of 2
01111110. If the output bit-string after stuffing is 01111100101, then What will
be input bit-string ?
(B) Station A uses 64 byte packets to transmit messages to Station B using a sliding [03]
window protocol. The round trip delay between A and B is 40 milliseconds and 1,2
the bottleneck bandwidth on the path between A and B is 256 kbps. What is the A
optimal window size that A should use?
(C) If you are assigned to design a LAN for BVM Campus having 7 departments. [04]
Each department will have 80 computers locating in 4 rooms each equipped 1,2
with 20 computers. Make your own justification while selecting connecting U
devices and accessories.
Q3 (A) Differentiate between random and slotted ALOHA. [03]
2R
OR OR OR
(A) How is checksum calculated in computer networks? [03]
A sender needs to send the four data items 2U
1) 10011001 2) 11100010 3) 00100100 4) 10000100
Answer the following:
1) Find the checksum at the sender site.
2) Find the checksum at the receiver site if there is no error.
(B) Explain the reason for moving from the Stop-and-Wait ARQ Protocol to the GO [03]
Back-N ARQ Protocol. 2,4
Also Compare and contrast the Go-Back-NARQ Protocol with Selective-Repeat U
ARQ.
OR OR OR
(B) Explain ICMP protocol in detail. [03]
4R
(C) Answer the following questions for device Bridge. [04]
1) What is a bridge? What are the functions of bridges? 2,3
2) What is a loop problem in bridges? U
3) What are the limitations of bridges?
4) In what way bridges differs from switches?
