Introduction to Sacraments

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, we expect that the students will
😇 define the meaning of sacrament
😇 enumerate the seven sacraments and know its classification
😇 know the purpose of Sacrament

What is Sacrament?

Sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, through which
Divine life is given. (CCC 1131)

There are seven Sacraments:

Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Matrimony, and Holy Orders.

Sacraments are classified as

❤Christian Initiation
(Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist)

❤Sacraments of Healing
(Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick), and

❤Sacraments of Commitment
(Matrimony and Holy Orders).

👉 “The purpose of the sacraments is:


❤to sanctify men,
❤to build up the body of Christ,
❤and finally, to give worship to God. Because they are signs, they also instruct.
Baptism, Effects and Threefold Mission

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, we expect that the students will
😇 define Baptism and know its etymology
😇 know the effects of Baptism
😇know the threefold mission of Christ received in baptism

👉What is Baptism?
❤gateway to the sacraments
❤necessary for salvation
❤by actual reception or at least by desire
❤Is validly conferred only by washing of water with the proper form

“Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.”

👉Etymology
❤The Greek word baptizein means to plunge or to immerse, and whether we are literally
immersed in water or the water is poured upon us, the water symbolizes the burial with Christ of
the catechumen.
👉What happen when we were baptized?
We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised
from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life” (Romans
5:3-4).
👉 Effects of Baptism

Through Baptism we are :

freed from sin and reborn as children of God;


become members of Christ,
are incorporated into the Church
and made sharers in its mission:

👉Part of the Rite in Baptism is to anoint a chrism on the crown of the head of the Child.
This would remind them that during their baptism, they received the threefold mission of
Christ.

😇know important things about baptism; naming, proper place,

Form👉 Name, I baptize you, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit

❤Baptism is done
👉by immersion
👉by pouring

❤Naming
👉Parents, sponsors and the pastor are to take care that a name foreign to Christian sensibility
is not given

❤Proper Place
👉church or oratory
👉 Baptism is not permitted in the private houses, unless the local ordinary permits it with a
grave cause.
👉in case of necessity or compelling pastoral reason baptism is not to be celebrated in the hos-
pital unless the diocesan bishop established otherwise
Ministers of Baptism

Lesson 1.d

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, we expect that the students will
😇 know who administers baptism

❤Ordinary Ministers of Baptism


👉Bishop, Priest and Deacon

❤Aside from the ordinary Ministers, Can a lay administer baptism

👉if the ordinary minister is absent or impeded, a catechist or another person designated by the
local ordinary,
👉in case of necessity any person with right intention, confers baptism licitly. (Can 861)
Objective

At the end of this topic the students are expected to

😇 knows the role of Godparent and everything about Godparent

Godparent/Sponsor

A godparent serves a special role for one to be baptized and should be chosen carefully and
with concern for the spiritual life of the one being baptized.
They are significant supporters and the ones who can first begin to reveal to their godchild the
value of the Christian community.

How many Godparent is needed?

Only one godparent is necessary, although both a godfather and godmother are preferred. Ac-
cording to Church law it is not permitted to have either two males or two females as godparents.

👉Age?
Church law insists that the godparent be at least 16 years old,

👉Qualifications

fully initiated in the Catholic Church (having received Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation).

They must be a member in good standing of the Catholic Church,

lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken,

and be someone other than the legal parents.
