Microsoft Project Tutorial


Goals: The goals of this lab are to introduce students to the Microsoft Project
software and to guide student to build the Gantt Chart of projects.

1. Introduction

This lab introduces the Microsoft Project Software. The tasks in this lab are:

• Build a simple Gantt Chart.


• Implement work breakdown structure using Gantt Chart.
• Create project using Gantt Chart.

Read through the entire lab and scan any supplied files before starting work.

2. TASK 1: Start a New Project

For this task you will learn how to create a new project using Microsoft Project. Here are the instructions to
build a simple Gantt chart.

1. Create a project and setup schedule with nonworking days:


a. Create a blank project. On Project tab, in the Properties group, click Project Information. In the
Start Date box, type Date, or click the down arrow to display the calendar.

b. In the Calendar box, click the down arrow. Make sure you select Standard.
c. On the Project tab, in the Properties group, click Change Working Time. In the Name field on the
Exceptions tab in the lower portion of the dialog box, type Thanksgiving Holiday/Spring Break,
and then click in the Start field, type Date, and then click the Finish field, type Date.

2. Editing project file properties


a. Click the file tab->Click Project information->Click Advanced Properties.

b. Edit the properties

3. Build a task list with milestone


a. Write the name of each task in the spreadsheet using the column Task Name
b. Write the duration in days of each task in the spreadsheet using the column Duration

c. Group the tasks by design process and add a name of the design. Select the name of tasks 5 and 6.
On the Task tab, in the Insert group, click Summary. Name the task System Design. Do similar for
tasks 1 to 11, and summary them as Engineering Design Process.

d. Add predecessors to each task in column Predecessors.


e. Select task Demo and Presentation, double-click it, and go to tab Advanced then check the box says
Mark Task as a Milestone.

4. Assign resources to tasks
a. Go to view - > Resource Sheet and add group members.

b. Go back to Gantt Chart then double-click the task. Go to tab Resources and look up names to add to
the task.

5. View critical path and cost


a. Go to Gantt Chart -> more views, then choose Detailed Gantt to see critical path.
b. Add a column and choose cost to see the cost.

6. Print the Gantt Chart
Go to View - >Zoom group to adjust timescale so that it can be seen in one screen. Also, hide the column
you don’t want to show to reader
