What is This??
HYDROMETER
Use ?
It tells us Density of the water
How to use what it gives ?
We get FWA from hydrostatic particulars and Calculate DWA
What is DWA?
To know the density of Water , we can calculate DWA i.e how much more cargo can we load when
in port to comply with load lines , drop metal bucket 6 mtrs below water level at every draft mark
and pick it up put in hydrometer and give it a mild twist so it rolls freely in the bucket make sure it
doesn’t bang on sides.
And note the reading on each side and average it out should not have a lot of difference…..
Marked on screen what is the reading?
Reading of Hydrometer 1.080

Will confirm with deck fwd and aft moorings are tight
And allow on master’s confirmation to blow through
Once they say Engine ready for try out and Bridge is ready as per company SMS checklist will wait for
master to come on bridge and try out main Engines
Steering gear tests? When are they done? How are they done?
Okay sir, we check communication with engine room and ask permission for both motors
Try hard over from one side to 30 degrees to other side and shall not exceed more than 28secs with
one motor then turn on both the motors give 35 that is complete hard over and give 30degrees to
other side
Now try this with second steering system
Try NFU out
And emergency steering out
Near coast Gps fails actions?
Call the master
Turn on second GPS
No second GPS
Okay sir, is the system dead completely or just not giving gps fix?
Completely dead.
Okay now will post extra look out
Increase PPI
Inform E/R
Try troubleshooting it if it works
Inform ETO if it doesn’t get repaired by me
Get an estimate of repair
Get the report ready to inform company
What all fixing methods will you consider ?
VISUAL
GYRO
Transit Bearings

Any help radar could be in here ?
Yes sir, Parallel Indexing
And Radar Ranges
Okay now you have everything back and operational but you have Navtex warning Heavy weather
Expected , Actions?
Inform master,
Do we have to make any alterations to our Passage Plan confirm with master.
Master says it will be fine we’ll proceed
Okay sir I’ll
Inform E/R
Chief officer
Galley
Ask them to secure everything on as we are going to have bad weather ahead
Consider slowing down engines once heavy weather begins
Avoid synchronous Rolling
Monitor Metrological Forecast
Keep a good check on barometer
How will you reduce impact of heavy weather ?
Head in to the waves at slow speed which will avoid rolling because if it gets synchronised with
waves it becomes dangerous

Okay navigation done
Master send you down Aft Mooring station actions ?

Shared screen
What is this?
HRU
What is HRU?
Hydrostatic. Released Unit
How does it work?
when a vessel sinks around 1-4 mtrs below water line it has a knife inside which gets lifted and cuts
the rope
How is it rigged ?
It has Three Holes one which is connected to senhouse slip
Second which is weaklink
And third which is connected to a strong point on deck
Senhouse slip for manual launching

Acknowledge by voice
If DSC repeats acknowledge the DSC
And steer towards distress
If no reply from the vessel relay msg ashore by any suitable means
Let’s do some BUOYAGE,
Identity, meaning of buoy,Shape, top-mark ,Lights, Rhythm, Actions
Emergency wreck buoy
// 24-72 hrs validity of this buoy for new dangers will be replaced by isolated danger mark or
cardinal buoy as appropriate//pillar or spar// St. Andrew’s cross//1s Blue 0.5sec darkness 1s yellow
0.5 sec darkness// keep clear of that buoy will receive NAVTEX warning as well.
Stbd hand lateral Buoy region B, Inbound
Cone pillar or spar// One red cone pointing upwards//light red // any other than composite group
flashing 2+1 //Keep the buoy on my port side alter to stbd
East cardinal Buoy heading North
Safe water lies on the east of this buoy// pillar or spar// two apexes base to base//light white// 3VQ
every 5 secs or 3Q every 10 secs
Safe water mark side to pass
Safe water all around it//buoy pillar or spar//one red sphere//isophase, occulting, 1 long flash every
10s or morse A .-
What is Isophase ?
Equal light and darkness periods
COLREGS
Lights, Day-Shape, fog signal, actions and rule acting under
PDV, probably 50 mtrs or more, STBD aspect seen on port bow,
Day shape – none
Fog signal – when making way 1 prolonged blast
Not making way 2 prolonged blast not exceeding time interval of 2 mins
I will take a series of compass bearings of an approaching vessel to ascertain the ROC EXISTS if
bearing does not appreciably change ROC exists
Ok ROC exists
I’ll maintain my course and speed as own vsl is stand on
Ok vessel coming close not taking action?
I’ll call the master and give at-least 5 rapid and short blasts on ship’s whistle to attract her attention
Still not taking action?
I’ll check my stbd side is clear take the wheel on hand sound 1 prolong blast and make a broad
alteration of course to stbd and reassess the situation.
Can you alter to port ?
No sir
Why?
Asper rule 17 when crossing situation stand-on vessel shall avoid alteration to port
How much is a prolong blast ?
4-6 seconds
Ram towing length of Vessel less than 50 mtrs length of tow more than 200 mtrs , seen from stbd
side
Day shape – diamond on each ship
And ball diamond ball in vertical line on RAM vessel where best it can be seen
Sound signal- 1 prolong followed by 2 short blast not extending time interval of 2 mins
If towed vessel is manned 1 prolong 3 short blasts immd after the tugs’s fog signal
I’ll take a series of compass bearing of the approaching vessel from three different bearings points as
it’s a very large tow to ascertain weather the ROC exists
Ok ROC exists
I’ll take the wheel on hand check my port side is clear and sound 2 short blasts make a broad
alteration of course to port and pass astern of the towing vsl and monitor the situation until finally
past and clear
Trawling vsl , less than 50 mtrs , making way, end on aspect, Rule 18
Day shape – two apexes meeting each other where best it can be seen
Fog signal – 1 prolong blast 2 short blast not extending time interval of 2 mins
Actions?
I’ll assume ROC exists as I see her ahead, i’ll check my port side is clear and sound 2 short blasts
make a broad alteration of course to port and monitor the situation until finally past and clear
NUC astern aspect , making way through water
Or
VSL aground less than 50mts in length
Its NUC
Day shape – 2 black balls in vertical line where best it can be seen
Fog signal – 1 prolong 2 short not extending time interval of 2 mins
Actions- i’ll take a series of compass bearings ok roc exsists
I’ll check stbd side is clear and take the wheel on hand sound 1 short blast and make a broad
alteration of course to stbd and monitor until finally past and clear
Can you go to port ?
Yes sir ?
Which rule?
Rule 13
Rule 13??
Overtaking
What is overtaking??
Okay sir rule 13 over taking has 4 points which say
1) Notwithstanding Any rule in section B part 1 and 2 any vessel overtaking shall keep clear of
the vessel being overtaken.
2) When coming up with a vessel more than 22.5 degrees abaft her beam is said to be
overtaking when at night she can see only her stern lights and neither of her side lights.
3) When in doubt she shall assume it is the condition and act accordingly
4) Any subsequent alterations between vessels shall not make it a crossing situation.
No Res viz or Radar Plot
Congratulations, you’ve met the standards
