1. Write down all the components that makeup a computer system and their functions.
 Central Processing Unit:
The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is called "the brain of computer" as it controls
operation of all parts of computer. It consists of two components: Arithmetic Logic Unit
(ALU), and Control Unit.

Functions

 The primary function of the central processing unit is to execute programs.


 It takes information and processes them according to your instructions.
 Calculations like Addition and Subtraction are also done with the help of the CPU
by the ALU.
 It controls and gives commands to all Computer parts such as memory, input, and
output devices.
 Read data & instruction from the memory.
 All data and instructions go through the central processing unit.
 Input device:
This is any equipment that is used for providing data and controlling the signals to an
information processing system. E.g. keyboard, mouse,

Functions

 Input devices help to get input or data from user.


 Input devices help to feed data to the computer.
 Output devices:
An output device is any peripheral that receives data from a computer, usually for
display, projection, or physical reproduction. For example, the image shows an inkjet
printer, an output device that makes a hard copy of anything shown on the monitor.
Monitors and printers are two of the most commonly used output devices used with a
computer.
Function
 Output devices help to display output to user in form of soft or hard copy.
2. A customer was complaining that her computer failed to display.
a. What were the possible causes of the problem?
 If your computer starts but the screen is black, it’s possible that the monitor is faulty.
 The PC may not be coming from a completely powered-off state. Sometimes, your
computer will appear to "not be on" when actually it's just having problems resuming
from either the Standby/Sleep or Hibernate power saving mode in Windows, resulting in
your computer being turned on but having no display on the monitor or keyboard.
 The power supply voltage switch may be set incorrectly.
If the input voltage for the power supply is not correct (based on your country), your
computer turns on but no display on monitor or keyboard. If this switch is wrong, it is
very possible that your PC wouldn't power on at all. Therefore, an incorrect power supply
voltage might prevent your computer from starting properly.
 The Windows may be faulty or corrupted.
If your computer is still having no display even after checking the monitor and verifying
that your PC has fully power cycled, you can try booting into safe mode and then
repairing Windows either using System Restore/Automatic Repair or resetting your
computer.
 BIOS Misconfigurations
Your computer problems might sometimes be caused by some BIOS (an acronym for
Basic Input/Output System) misconfigurations.
 Loose memory modules.
If a memory module is loose, the computer might not display an image. In other words,
your computer starts but the screen is black.
 The actual port connectors on the computer and on the monitor maybe damaged.
 The video port cable may be damaged or wrongly connected to a connection that doesn’t
match.
3. A customer was complaining that she tried to power the computer but received an error
which reads “press f1 to retry boot”
a. What are the possible causes of the problem?
 The BIOS setup settings may not be properly set and default settings may be required or
the date and time may not be well set.
 The CMOS battery may be faulty.
4. Write down the factors that should be considered before assembling a computer system

Step 1: Mount the Processor

The first step for assembling the computer system starts with mounting the processor on the
processor socket of the motherboard. To mount the process, you don't need to apply any force.
The special ZIF (zero insertion force) sockets are usually used to prevent any damage to the
processor pins. Once the processor is mounted, the heat sink will be attached on top of the
processor. The CPU fan is also attached on top of the heat sink.

Step 2: Fix the Motherboard in the Tower Case

Now the motherboard is to be fixed vertically in the tower case and the screws are fixed from
behind of the motherboard.

Step 3: Connect the Power Supply

Now line up the power supply at the top back end of the cabinet and screw it. The power
connectors for motherboard power supply and CPU fan power supply are to be connected. If the
cabinet cooling FAN is required then it is to be screwed at the back end grill of the cabinet and
its power connector is to be connected from SMPS.

Step 4: Install the Drives

Install the CD/DVD drives at the top front end of the cabinet and screw it. Install the Hard disk
drive and floppy disk drive below CD/DVD drive and screw it. Make sure once screwed there is
no vibration in either of the CD/DVD, hard disk or floppy disk drives.

Step 5: Connect Cables

Now select the appropriate data cable and connect one end of the cable to its drive socket and
another end at its appropriate connector on the motherboard. For SATA hard disk drive or
CD/DVD drives use SATA cable and its power cable, else use IDE data cable. Do the proper
jumper settings as per the usage requirement.

Step 6: Mount the Memory Modules


It is time now to mount the memory modules on the motherboard by aligning the RAM to its
socket on the motherboard and press it downward. Make sure the side tab are fixed into the RAM
notch. If not, you may still have to press a bit.

Step 7: Install the Internal Cards

Install the internal cards to its socket and attach the cables or power cable to it. The selection of
right socket or slot is required as per the type of socket.

Step 8: Cover the Tower

Cover the tower by placing it and pressing towards front side and screw it.

Step 9: Connect the External Devices and Power

Connect the external devices with CPU at its appropriate socket. It includes mouse and keyboard
at PS2 or USB connectors. Monitor at the video output socket. Connect the power cable to the
back of tower in SMPS. Plug in the power cable to the electric board.

5. A customer was complaining that her computer was working yesterday, but when she tried to
switch it on in the morning, it was making beeps at start up. What is the possible cause of the
problem?

Sometimes when the computer is moved, or over time, a memory stick can become loose,
causing errors as its being read. Try fixing this issue by opening the computer, removing each of
the memory sticks, and placing them back into the memory slots.
