Solving Word Problem Involving Direct Proportion in Different Context Such As Distance, Rate and Time Using Appropriate Strategies and Tools Grade 6 Lesson Plan

The lesson plan teaches solving word problems involving direct proportion. Students will practice setting up proportions to find missing values given rates, ratios or scales. Examples include problems about newspaper sales, magazine promotions, transportation costs and more. Students work through sample problems in groups, then reinforce the concept with additional exercises involving ratios, rates and using proportions to solve for unknown quantities.

A LESSON PLAN IN

MATHEMATICS 6

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
Solve word problem involving direct proportion in different contexts
such as distance, rate and time using appropriate strategies and tools.
(m6NS-IIc-134)

II. Subject Matter

Topic:Solving word problem involving direct proportion in different
context such as distance, rate and time using appropriate strategies
and tools.
Value Focus: Industry
Prerequisite Concept and Skills
 Set up Proportion for group of objects or numbers.
 Find a missing term in a proportion.
Materials: Chalkboard, powerpoint presentation
Reference: Lesson Guide in Mathematics in Grade 6
Math for life p.121

III. Instructional Procedure

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Drill
Multiplication and Division Facts
7x9 6x8 9x3 5x6 4x8
24÷4 6÷3 16÷4 15÷3 32÷8

2. Review
Find a missing term in a proportion.
1. 4 : N = 12:30
2. N : 4 = 3:6
3. 4:20 = N:10
4. 3:5 = 9:N
5. 3:6 = N : 10

3. Motivation
What do you usually do during weekends to earn extra money?

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentaion
Present the problem

Fred and Kapo sell newspapers during weekends to earn extra money. For
every newspapers that Fred sells, Kapo sells 5. If Fred sells 15 newspapers,
How many did Kapo sells?

2. Performing the Activity

Group the pupils into 4 groups. Each group will answer the activity.
Enumerate the standard of group activity.

GROUP ACTIVITY
Solve the problem
I. Analyze the problem
a) What is asked in the problem?
b) What are given in the given in the problem?
c) Illustrate the problem.

II. Set a proportion

a) What is the missing term?
b) What proportion can you formulate base on the problem?

III. Solve
a) What is the correct answer to the problem?

3. Processing Activity
Let the pupils post their work on the board and check then discuss their
work.

Explain the Illustration

The Proportion is called Direct Proportion.

The quantities change in the same direction

As the newspapers that Fred sells increases the number of

newspapers that Kapo sells also increases.
Activity 2 - Let the pupils solve another word problem
Follow the steps in solving a word problem involving Direct
Proportion

Problem 2
The sign in the store window says “magazine for sale”, Buy 3 take
How many magazines must I buy if I want to take 10 magazines fo
free?

4. Reinforcing the Concepts:

1. At the school canteen:
a) 3 pieces of pad paer cost 45 cents.
21 pices of pad paper cost __________

b) 4 colored pencils cost Php 25

12 colored pencils cost __________

c) 2 boiled bananas cost Php 3.50

10 boiled bananas cost __________

2. Solve the Problems

a) A motorist travels 275 km. In 5 hours How far can he travel in
5 hours. How far can he travel in 9 hours in the same speed.

Proportion ________
Answer ___________
b) Two Ceres Buses can transport 130 pupils. How many Ceres
buses are needed to transport 780 pupils.
Proportion ______
Answer __________

5. Summarizing the Lesson

How do we solve word problem involving direct proportion?

In solving word problem involving direct proportion

1. Analyze the problem

2. Set a proportion
3. Solve a missing term to form a direct proportion
(Multiply the complete given term then the product divide to the
remaining term.)

6. Applying to new and other situations

Read and Solve
The ratio of the areas of 2 squares is 1:4. the area of the
smaller square is 36 cm.
How long is each side of the bigger square?
IV. Evaluation
Direction: Analyze each problem and write a proportion then solve.

1. At the rate of 3 items per Php 100. How much will 12 items cost?

2. A car travels 72 km on 8 litres of gasoline. At the same rate, about

how far can it travel in 11 litres of gasoline?

3. The ratio of duck eggs to chicken eggs in an egg stire is 2:7, if there
are 312 duck eggs in the store, how many chicken eggs are there?

V. Assignment
Direction: Write a proportion for each problem then solve for the
missing terms.

1. The ratio of 2 numbers is 3:5. the longer number is 38. What is the
smaller number?
