• Coax
– The coax example is intended to show you how to create and simulate a coaxial cross-section using 2D Extractor. The
example assumes that the user has reviewed and understands all of the sections covered in the Getting Started Guide.
– The following illustration details the passive device you will be creating.

Getting Started Customer Training Material

• Launching Ansoft Q3D Extractor


– To access Ansoft Q3D, click the Microsoft Start button, select Programs, and select the Ansoft Q3D Extractor 8
program group. Click Q3D Extractor 8

• Opening

– In Ansoft Q3D Extrator Desktop, click the  On the Standard toolbar, or
select the menu item File > New.
– From the Project menu, select Insert 2D Extractor Design.

• Set Solution Type


– Select the menu item 2D Extractor> Solution Type
• Choose Closed
• Click the OK button

Creating the 2D Model Customer Training Material

• Set Model Units


– Select the menu item Modeler > Units
• Select Units: cm
• Click the OK button

• Setting Tool Options


– Note: In order to follow the steps outlined in this example, verify that the following tool options are set :
– Select the menu item Tools > Options > Modeler Options.
– Modeler Options Windo
Window:
• Click the Operation tab
– Automatically cover closed polylines: ; Checked
• Click the Drawing tab
– Edit p

• Click the OK button

• Set Default Material


– Using the 3D Modeler Materials toolbar
toolbar, choose Select
• Type Air in the Search By Name box
• When the Air material is highlighted click the OK button

Creating the 2D Model Customer Training Material

• Create Dielectric
– Select the menu item Draw > Circle
• Using the coordinate entry fields, enter the center position
– X: 0.0, Y: 0.0, Z: 0.0, Press the Enter key
• Using the coordinate entry fields, enter the radius:
– dX: 0.511, dY: 0, dZ: 0, Press the Enter key
– Select the Attribute tab from the Properties window.
• For the Value of Name type: Air_Diel
• Click the OK button
– To fit the view:
1. Select the menu item View > Fit All > Active View. Or press the CTRL+D key

• Set Default Material


– Using the Modeler Materials toolbar, from the list choose copper

• Create Pin
– Select the menu item Draw > Circle
• Using the coordinate entry fields, enter the center position
– X: 0.0,
0 0 Y: 0.0,
0 0 Z: 0.0,
0 0 Press the Enter key
• Using the coordinate entry fields, enter the radius:
– dX: 0.225, dY: 0, dZ: 0, Press the Enter key
– Select the Attribute tab from the Properties window.
• For the Value of Name type: Pin
• Click the OK button

Solution Setup Customer Training Material

• Setting up the Conductors


– Select the menu item Edit > Select By Name
• Highlight and Select Pin from the list
• Select the menu item 2D Extractor > Conductor> Assign > Signal Line
– Name:

• Highlight and Select Air_Diel from the list

Analysis Customer Training Material

• Save Project
– In an Ansoft Q3D Extractor window, select the menu item File > Save As.
• From the Save As window, type the Filename: 2d_coax
• Click the Save button

• Model Validation
– Select the menu item 2D Extractor > Validation Check
– Click the Close button
• Note: To view any errors or warning messages, use the Message Manager.

• Analyze
– Select the menu item 2D Extractor > Analyze All

• Solution Data
– Select the menu item Q3D Extractor > Results > Solution Data
• To view the Profile:
– Click

– Click the Convergence Tab
– Note: The default view is for convergence is Table. Select the Plot radio button to view a graphical
representations of the convergence data.
• To view the Matrix Data:

• Length along Z axis: 10
• Units: cm
