MECA 332 - İstanbul Bilgi University Problem Set IV Instructor: Mehmet Ayyıldız

This document contains a 3 problem mechanical engineering assignment on structural analysis from MECA 332 at Istanbul Bilgi University. Problem 1 involves calculating safety factors for a rectangular bar under fluctuating forces. Problem 2 calculates the safety factor of bolts sealing a pressurized chamber. Problem 3 determines the number of bolts needed to attach a hemispherical window based on principal stresses and allowable bolt stress.

Problem Set IV
Instructor: Mehmet Ayyıldız

Problem 1.

The rectangular bar shown below is exposed to a fluctuating force F. The yield and ultimate
tensile strengths of the bar material are Sy = 150 MPa and Sut = 400 MPa, respectively. The
corrected endurance limit of the part is Se = 100 MPa.

a) Calculate the safety factor of the design for N = 105 cycles if the magnitude of the
force F varies between -10 kN and 10 kN.
b) Calculate the safety factor of the design for infinite life if the magnitude of the force F
varies between -10 kN and 10 kN.
c) Calculate the safety factor of the design for N = 105 cycles if the magnitude of the
force F varies between 0 kN and 20 kN.

Problem 2.

A pressure chamber is sealed by a cover fastened with four preloaded bolts (M10, Class 5.8).
If the pressure inside the chamber is P = 400 kPa, the diameter of the vessel is Dvessel = 60 cm,
and the joint stiffness constant for the bolt and material interface is C = 0.1, calculate the
safety factor of bolts for yielding.

Problem 3.

A hemispherical window in a decompression chamber is subjected to an internal air pressure

P. The inner radius of the hemisphere is rhemisphere = 80 cm and its thickness is t = 1 cm. The
Mohr circle representation of the principal stresses for a small element taken on the surface of
the window is shown on the right. Calculate the number of bolts required to attach the
window to the wall of the chamber if each bolt has a radius of rbolt = 1 cm and the allowable
tensile stress for the bolts is 150 MPa.
