Math 10 Week 9

This document provides a learning activity sheet on measures of position and other statistical methods for analyzing grouped data. It contains examples of calculating the quartiles (Q1, Q2, Q3) and mean of grouped data sets. The examples demonstrate determining these values from frequency distributions and interpreting the results. Graphical representations of the data using box plots and histograms are also illustrated. Practice exercises are provided for students to calculate quartiles, means, and create histograms for additional data sets.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 9

MEASURES OF POSITION (GROUPED DATA)

OBJECTIVE: Uses appropriate measures of position and other statistical methods in

analyzing and interpreting research data (M10SP-IVh-j-1)
LEARNING ACTIVITY:
Grouped data are data formed by organizing individual observations such as scores
into groups for immediate interpretation using appropriate statistical tools. After the data set
has been gathered, the next step is to present the data in organized form such as table or
graph. In this activity sheets, we will consider the use of measures of position, frequency
distribution, the mean and graphical presentation to fully understand a data set in any
statistical investigations. Study and understand the following examples.
Example 1. The frequency distribution shows the Performance of Grade 10 Amiability
in Mathematics for the Third Quarter. Calculate and interpret the Q1, Q2 (median) and
Q3 of the grade performance.
Solution:

Grades Frequency LB <cf

96-100 1 95.5 60
91-95 5 90.5 59
86-90 7 85.5 54
81-85 14 80.5 47
Q3 Class 33rd- 45th Scores
76-80 15 75.5 33
Q2 Class 16th- 32nd Scores
71-75 10 70.5 18
Q1 Class 8th -15th Scores
66-70 6 65.5 8
61-65 2 60.5 2
i= 5 N= 60
The following are the computed values for the Q1, Q2 (median) and Q3 of the performance
grade.

 Q1 = 74
 Q2 (median) = 79.5
 Q3 = 84.79
Assuming that the minimum and maximum value is 61 and 96 respectively, this
illustration is an example of box plot of the grade performance.

Q1 = 74 Median= 79.5 Q3= 84.79

25% 25% 25% 25%
Minimum Maximum

60 65 70 75 80 85 90 95
100
Since Q1 = 74, about 25% of student’s performance grade is equal or lower than 74
and 75% is equal or above 74. The median grade is 79.5, this means that 50% of the
student’s grade performance is equal or below 79.5 and 50% of the student’s grade
performance is equal or above 79.5. Moreover, 25% of the student’s grade performance is
equal or above 84.79.
A mean can also be determined for data that is grouped. To calculate the mean
(midpoint method) of grouped data, the first step is to determine the midpoint of each
interval class. These midpoints must be multiplied by the frequencies of the corresponding
classes. The sum of the products divided by the total number of values/frequency will be the
value of the mean.
Example 2. The frequency distribution shows the Performance of Grade 10 Amiability
in Mathematics for the Third Quarter. What is the mean grade performance?

Solution
Grades Frequency Midpoint f(M)
96-100 1 98 98
91-95 5 93 465
86-90 7 88 616
81-85 14 83 1162
76-80 15 78 1170
71-75 10 73 730
66-70 6 68 408
61-65 2 63 126
N= 60 ∑

To find the mean;

Mean = ∑

= 79.58
Therefore, the average grade performance of Grade 10 Amiability in Mathematics for the
Third Quarter is 79.58.
Example 3. The frequency distribution shows the scores of Grade 9 students in
National Career Assessment Examination. Show the graphical representation of the
data using histogram. (x= midpoint, fx= midpoint. frequency)

Classes f x fx
92-98 4 95 380
85-91 8 88 704
78-84 10 81 810
71-77 16 74 1184
64-70 25 67 1675
57-63 15 60 900
50-56 13 53 689
43-49 9 46 414
N= 100 6756

The average score of 100 Grade 9 students in NCAE is 67.56. The histogram is skewed to the
right.
