Q1 = 74
Q2 (median) = 79.5
Q3 = 84.79
Assuming that the minimum and maximum value is 61 and 96 respectively, this
illustration is an example of box plot of the grade performance.
60 65 70 75 80 85 90 95
100
Since Q1 = 74, about 25% of student’s performance grade is equal or lower than 74
and 75% is equal or above 74. The median grade is 79.5, this means that 50% of the
student’s grade performance is equal or below 79.5 and 50% of the student’s grade
performance is equal or above 79.5. Moreover, 25% of the student’s grade performance is
equal or above 84.79.
A mean can also be determined for data that is grouped. To calculate the mean
(midpoint method) of grouped data, the first step is to determine the midpoint of each
interval class. These midpoints must be multiplied by the frequencies of the corresponding
classes. The sum of the products divided by the total number of values/frequency will be the
value of the mean.
Example 2. The frequency distribution shows the Performance of Grade 10 Amiability
in Mathematics for the Third Quarter. What is the mean grade performance?
Solution
Grades Frequency Midpoint f(M)
96-100 1 98 98
91-95 5 93 465
86-90 7 88 616
81-85 14 83 1162
76-80 15 78 1170
71-75 10 73 730
66-70 6 68 408
61-65 2 63 126
N= 60 ∑
= 79.58
Therefore, the average grade performance of Grade 10 Amiability in Mathematics for the
Third Quarter is 79.58.
Example 3. The frequency distribution shows the scores of Grade 9 students in
National Career Assessment Examination. Show the graphical representation of the
data using histogram. (x= midpoint, fx= midpoint. frequency)

The average score of 100 Grade 9 students in NCAE is 67.56. The histogram is skewed to the
right.

travel of at least 27.23 minutes
The average time travel of 60 students is 21 minutes.
Constructing a Histogram
1. Open Microsoft Excel. (Grouped Data)
2. Enter the midpoints of the data into column A. Enter the frequencies into column B.
3. Highlight the frequencies (including the label) from column B.
4. Select the Insert tab from the toolbar and Line Chart Option.
5. Select the 2-D line chart type.
To edit the graph so that the midpoints are on the horizontal axis and the frequencies
are on the vertical axis
1. Right-click the mouse to any region of the graph.
2. Select the Select Data.
3. Select Edit from the Horizontal Axis Labels and highlight the midpoints from column A,
then click OK.
4. Click OK on the Select Data Source box.
