Casestudy

This document provides instructions for a case study assignment in the DAT10203 Discrete Mathematics course. Students must complete the assignment in groups of 6-7 students. The assignment consists of two parts - a written report and a video presentation. The report must be no more than 8 pages and include sections on team member roles, a problem statement, methodology to solve the problem using a graph or tree algorithm, the solution, conclusion, and references. The video presentation must be no more than 8 minutes, include an introduction of team members and the problem, demonstration of how the graph/tree is constructed and its components, and a visualization of how an algorithm solves the problem step-by-step. Both parts will be

Case Study

1. Complete this task in groups of six or seven.

2. This case study will be assessed based on two parts, which are the
Instructions report and the video presentation.
3. Each part must fulfil the specified minimum requirements.

Question

Choose a real-life problem that can be solved using a graph or a tree. In order to solve the
problem, choose one algorithm from the list below or any other suitable algorithm that you
have explored.
1. Maximum Flow Algorithm
2. Kruskal’s Algorithm
3. Dijkstra’s Algorithm

Example of tools that can be used to visualise a graph or a tree:

1. Graph Online
2. VisuAlgo: Graph Traversal
3. USFCA: Breadth-First Search
4. USFCA: Depth-First Search
5. VisuAlgo: Create Graph

Part A: Report Requirements

The report must contain the sections stated below.

1. Roles of team members.
2. Problem statement.
3. Methodology to solve the problem. It must consist of:
a. The best type of graph or tree to represent the real-life problem*
b. The graph or tree model*
c. The algorithm*
*Justify your determination and state the tools used to visualize your model or step by
step solution.
Please adapt the concepts and terms learned in this course to maximize your mark.
4. Final solution to the problem and its justification(s). You just need to state the URL to
your YouTube video detailing the solution.
5. Conclusion.
6. References. You must use the APA citation format.
7. Rubric.

Your report must not exceed eight pages.

Part B: Video Presentation Requirements

The video or animation presentation, must fulfil the minimum requirements stated below.
1. Introduction to members of your team.
2. Introduction to the problem.
3. Demonstrate how the graph or tree is constructed. You are free to use any tool(s).
4. Describe the vertices (or nodes) and edges (or arcs) in the graph or tree.
5. Demonstrate how an algorithm is used to solve the problem. Visualise the process step
by step, by either using simple animation or any tool(s).

Your video presentation must not exceed eight minutes, must be recorded using your own
voice, and must be uploaded to YouTube.
