PH-101L: Fundamentals of Mechanics Lab
Lab Objective
The Engineering Mechanics Laboratory will help students to understand the application of theory that they have
studied in practice by performing experiments and verifying results. The objective of the curriculum with effective
skill will be developed in them to observe experimental data, and to analyze the results.

Lab Contents
Introduction to Significant Figures and Measurements [CLO1, CLO2, CLO4, CLO5]
Lab 1
Develop skills in measurement using Vernier caliper and micrometer screw gauge.
Study of Average Velocity using Air Track System [CLO1, CLO2, CLO4, CLO5]
Investigate the relationship between instantaneous and average velocities and see how a series of Lab 2
average velocities can be used to deduce an instantaneous velocity.
Forces (Addition and Resolution) [CLO1, CLO2, CLO4, CLO5]
Lab 3
Finding the resultant of two or more forces experimentally using parallelogram method.
Translational Equilibrium [CLO1, CLO3, CLO4, CLO5]
Lab 4
Demonstrate the addition of vectors using the concept of equilibrium.
Acceleration due to Gravity [CLO1, CLO3, CLO4, CLO5]
Lab 5
To experimentally calculate the value of acceleration due to gravity “g” using Tape Timer apparatus.
Conservation of Energy using Projectile Launcher [CLO1, CLO3, CLO4, CLO5]
The purpose of this experiment is to show that the kinetic energy of a ball launched straight up is Lab 6
transformed into potential energy.
Time of Flight of a Projectile [CLO1, CLO2, CLO4, CLO5]
To study the relationship between time of flight and initial velocity, predict the horizontal distance Lab 7
travelled and to calculate the horizontal velocity of the projectile.
Ballistic Pendulum [CLO1, CLO3, CLO4, CLO5]
Determination of the muzzle velocity of the projectile launcher by shooting a ball into a ballistic Lab 8
pendulum and measuring the height reached by pendulum.
Rotational Dynamics [CLO1, CLO2, CLO4, CLO5]
Study of the rotation about fixed axis through center of mass of object. Lab 9
Variable “g” Pendulum [CLO1, CLO2, CLO4, CLO5]
To measure the time period “T” as the function of effective acceleration and for various pendulum Lab 10
lengths.
Open Ended Lab
Lab 11
Lab task provided individually.

Lab Equipment / Apparatus
A wide range of equipment may be used in the physics laboratory, from generic lab items, such as meter sticks,
rubber balls, springs, string, metal spheres, calibrated mass sets, beakers, glass and cardboard tubes, electronic
balances, stopwatches, clamps, and ring stands to items more specific to physics, such as tracks, carts, light bulbs,
resistors, magnets, and batteries. Successful guided inquiry student work can be accomplished both with simple,
inexpensive materials and with more sophisticated physics equipment, such air tracks, force sensors, and
oscilloscopes. Use the details given in this manual, with equipment listed for each experiment, to get an idea of
what equipment is necessary for a specific experiment in which students gather and analyze data using calculators
or computer interfaced equipment.

Instructions/ Suggestions for Students

 Student Attendance is expected to be 100%, and minimum 80% (mandatory) attendance that is required
to sit in the final exams.
 Student must pay the attention for reading the lab manual for course assessment.
 All the direct assessment tools i.e., Lab Performance, Lab Reports, Midterms, and final Exams must be
attempted. Failure to attempt in any of the assessment tools without any medical reasons may results to
fail in that assessment.
 Class participation is highly encouraged. It develops more interest. Students are also advised to spare
some time for group discussion with their classmates to explore new ideas.
 Late submission of lab report will result in deduction of marks.
 Any related notes will be available on FES internet course portal.
 For any query, please contact instructor during office time.
