also assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge
and attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The English Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-
learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the
references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The English Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue

learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you
with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being
an active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then
perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned
to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

WRITING A SHORT STORY (FICTION/NONFICTION)

WITH ITS COMPLETE ELEMENTS

I. Learning Competency with Code

Write a short story (fiction/nonfiction) with its complete elements
EN4WC-IId-20

II. Background Information for Learners

A short story is an account of imaginary or real people

and events told for entertainment. It is a work of short narrative
prose fiction or nonfiction that can be read in one sitting that is
centered around one single event. It has a beginning, middle
and end.

Stories may be fiction or nonfiction. Fiction stories are

made up by the author and are not true. Nonfiction stories are
about real things, people, animals, events and places.

There are many things that go into writing a good story.

When we read it, we often do not realize that there are many
different elements of a story. Story elements are the pieces or
parts that make up a story. The basic elements of a story are
setting, characters and plot. Strong characters and an
interesting setting make your story fun to read and a good story
has a clear beginning, middle and end.

This learning activity sheet will help you develop your

writing skills by studying these elements of a short story and
writing a short story with its complete elements.

1
Elements of a Short Story

Setting
✓ The setting of a story is the place where the story
happens and the time when it happens.

✓ It tells about WHEN and WHERE the story takes place.

Characters

in the story.

✓ It tells about WHO the story is about, the people or

animals in the story that carry out the actions.

Plot
✓ The plot is the sequence of events or actions that
happened in the story. It is usually a series of related
incidents which build and grow as the story develops. It
consists of the beginning, the middle and the ending.

✓ It tells about WHAT happens in the story, the sequence

of events in the story.

o Beginning – It introduces the setting and the

characters. It gives the problem faced by the
main character.

o Middle – It presents the action made by the

characters to solve the problem.

o Ending – It gives the solution to the problem. It

should make the story feel finished.

Read the short story below and learn about its different elements
by studying the graphic organizer that follows.

Pablo and the Eggs

Pete, the grasshopper, and his friend Pablo, the

praying mantis, were playing in the garden. One day,
they found some small round objects in the grass.
Pablo wanted to play with them because they looked
like small balls.

He was to pick them up when Pete stopped him,

“Those are not playthings.”

“They look like small eggs,” Pete said.

“No, they are not eggs. I am going to play with

these balls.” Pablo insisted. He got two and prepared
to throw them. Suddenly the eggs broke and out came
the little bugs.

Pablo was surprised. “Oh! They’re alive!” he said

as each one ran in different directions.

Pete laughed at the frightened Pablo. “See, I told

you.”

The Ant and the Grasshopper

Aesop’s Fable

In a field one summer’s day, a grasshopper was

hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart’s content. An
ant passed by carrying an ear of corn. It was a very heavy
load, but he did not stop. He was taking the corn to his nest.

“Why not come and play with me?” said the

grasshopper. “The day is too nice to be working so hard.”

“I am hoping to lay out food for the winter,” said the ant.
“I think you should be doing the same.”

“Why worry about the winter?” the grasshopper said,

“We have plenty of food now.”

The ant was tired from his work, and he thought it would
be fun to join the grasshopper. But he went on his way and
went on working until he had filled his nest with corn.

Winter came as it always does, and the grasshopper

had no more food to eat. He was dying of hunger, while the
ants were eating every day from the corn they had stored
away. Then the grasshopper knew that it is the best to
prepare for the days ahead.
