Let us have first a review on what is poetry?
Who can give us the meaning of poetry?
I, Ma’am!
Yes? What is poetry based on your previous
discussion?
Poetry is a special type of literature in which words
are arranged and chosen to create a certain effect.
Exactly! Further, the purpose of poetry is “to create
among people the possibility of wonder, admiration,
enthusiasm, mystery, the sense that life is marvelous.
C. Motivation
I have here different examples of poems and all you
have to do is to listen carefully and later you have
to give your observation. Did you understand?
Yes, teacher!
What have you noticed with those poems?
I’d noticed that all the poems have in common, they
conveyed message implied by the speaker.
Good observation!
All of these poems conveyed emotions and feelings
of the speaker/writer. Did the poems convince you to
to what it wants to appeal?
Yes, teacher!
I felt the heartbreak of the speaker/writer in the first
poem and enjoyed the authentic love expressed by
the speaker/writer in the second
poem. Each poem has message to convey for
everyone.
Very good!
Poem are produced to convey message to every
reader/listener.

D. Unlocking of Difficulties
Before we proceed to our discussion, let us first unlock
those difficult words that can be found in the lesson that
we are going to tackle today. The words were pasted on
the board and all you have to do is to look its meaning
that is being pasted on the wall and match it.

of the poem.
a. Activity
I will group you into three groups by counting 1-3.
Each group will be given a poem and analyze attitude
conveyed by the speaker/writer and give the message
of the poem. Am I clear?

b. Analysis and Discussion


1. After the presentation of the students, the teacher will give feedback.
2. Present the exact tone and theme of the given poems

Notes:
Literature – written works which deal with themes of permanent and universal interest, characterized by creativeness
and grace of expression, as poetry, fiction, essays, etc.

Poetry – is a special type of literature in which words are arranged and chosen to create a certain effect. Poets
carefully select words for their sounds and meanings and combine them in different and unusual ways in order to
communicate ideas, feelings, new ways of looking at things, experiences, and sometimes stories. Poets use elements
of poetry to convey the sounds, emotions, pictures, and ideas they want to express.

Poem - a composition in verse, either in meter or in free verse, characterized by the imaginative treatment of
experience and a heightened use of language more intensive than ordinary speech.

Elements:
Theme - is the message about life or human nature that the poet shares with the reader. For example, the
theme might be an idea, such as “Death is inevitable.”
Tone - the stated or implied attitude of an author towards his subject.

Techniques:
1. Sound Devices
a. Alliteration – is the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginnings of words.
b. Consonance – is the repetition of consonant sounds within words or at the ends of words.
c. Assonance – is the repetition of vowel sounds within non – rhyming words.
2. Imagery – is descriptive language used to represent objects, feelings, and thoughts. It often appeals to one
or more of the five senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell.
3. Figure of Speech – is a word or expression that is not meant to be taken literally.
a. A simile uses the word like or as to compare two seemingly unlike things.
b. A metaphor compares two or more different things by stating or implying that one thing is another.
c. Personification involves giving human characteristics to an animal, object, or idea.
