REFLECTION

From our discussion, I have reflected that a leader is someone who sees
opportunities for improvement and inspires others to work toward a common goal. In an
organization, while putting people first, great leaders may strive toward making their
mission and vision a reality. Leading is never an easy task, just being able to motivate
people isn’t enough — leaders should have the complete qualities that connect with
people to be successful. And to be a great leader, there are many considerations to
consider and qualities that a leader must possess.

There were many qualities of a leader that were being mentioned during our
discussion on PhDEL614 with Dr. Alderite. I have realized that there were a lot of skills
that make up good leadership, but there is one quality that is possibly the most
challenging for me, that is, decisiveness. Being seen as a decisive and powerful
decision maker is essential to building our leadership credibility. However, in every
organization, problems and obstacles are most likely to occur. A leader should make
timely decision when such situations happen. For me, it is difficult because in assessing
your ability to be decisive, there are a lot of things you should consider: whether you
have gathered the right amount of information before making decision or have used all
the resources to collect the right kind of information when making decisions. A leader
should think through all the decisions backed by logic and taking personal responsibility
for whatever, the outcome will be. If failed to do so, a leader would leave an impression
of doubt and lack of confidence and his/her capabilities and experience can come into
question. Add to that the personal frustration, energy and time that goes along with a
protracted decision-making process. Personally, I have witnessed this kind of situation
in one of the schools in our district. Sadly, it had made the teaching organization where
the members in it don’t have a positive relationship with each other, and worst, some
members don’t give respect to their principal because he was always asking others
what they thought but never came up with any conclusions himself. Though it was a
minor problem, it is something that I will never forget on my first service in DepEd until
now.

In the teaching academe, to be leader, one should be a collaborative decision

maker. Being a decisive leader is a highly desirable skill, especially when it comes to
running a school organization. I have come to realize, that is important to walk your talk
by saying what you mean. If you don't have solid, timely decisions and guidance, all
those around you have something to lose especially your position. As a future leader, I
will do the best I can to possess all the qualities of a good leader including
decisiveness.
