HOLIDAYS HOMEWORK
Reading improves memory and cognitive ability — which means it's
a healthy habit that can help kids in and outside the classroom.
Along with that improved brain power comes an improved
vocabulary. Reading is a wonderful way to build your child's
language, social and emotions skills.
SEWA PROJECT
Community service gives students an opportunity to explore academic
interests through a real world lens. When students get involved in community
service, they not only help others — they expand their worldview, develop
empathy and leadership skills, and realize how their actions can have a
positive impact. They also return to the classroom realizing how what they’re
learning applies to the real world, which reinvigorates their passion for
learning. To imbibe such values students have to undertake this SEWA project.

• It is compulsory to answer all the questions
• Read all the options carefully before selecting the correct option
1. Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow.
Stubble burning is intentionally setting fire to the straw stubble thatt remains after grains,
like paddy, wheat, etc., have been harvested. We must educate and convince farmers not to
burn straw. From mixing the stubble into soil, to making manure and using in the packaging
industry, there are a lot of ways in which the problem of stubble burning can be solved. This
can create employment for agricultural labourers. At village level, agricultural workers can
be employed by village panchayats to collect paddy straw and paid wages under MNREGA.
The collected straw can be dumped at a common place identified by the panchayat. Earth
can be dug to produce manure, to be sold at a nominal price. Basmati paddy straw is a
nutritious fodder for animals. In place of common varieties of rice, the cultivation of basmati
rice has to be encouraged. The paddy straw can also be used to produce high-value products
for the energy industry.
Do you know that around 270 eucalyptus trees or 460 bamboo plants are saved when we
produce one tonne of hand made paper? It is eco-friendly hand-made paper that also checks
pollution of water, land and air. Large quantities of polluting chemicals are used by paper
mills .
Hand-made paper is the best form of recycled paper. It has a fine surface for writing. It is
also strong enough for making drawings.
Paper manufacturing is a very old tradition. It was invented in China nearly two thousand
years back.
Indians used the leaves of palm trees for writing. Papyrus is a kind of paper made from a
reed of the same name. It grew on the banks of the River Nile, and was used in Egypt.
The hand-made paper industry flourished in India during the Mughal period. But it died
with the setting up of paper mills in the 18th and 19th centuries. Mahatma Gandhi revived
it during the freedom movement. Today it is a fast growing industry.
(c) What did Indians use for writing when there was no paper?
(e) Why did the hand-made paper industry die in India in the 18th and 19th centuries?

General Instructions

• It is compulsory to answer all the questions
• Read all the options carefully before selecting the correct option
1. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below.(5-marks)
Air pollution in Indian cities has triggered major health concerns. In response to these
health challenges, pulmonary drug delivery through nebulizers is gaining widespread
acceptance. Nebulizers are emerging as a preferred choice for the treatment of debilitating
lung disorders.
Nebulizers enable people with lung conditions to inhale liquid-based medications into their
airways to instantly relieve troublesome symptoms like wheezing and breathlessness and
prevent acute attacks. Considering that some medications work best with specific types of
nebulizers, it is advisable to consult a doctor about the type of nebulizer suited for you,
which would depend on the severity of your condition, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment
regimen. Which device best serves your purpose will also hinge on your lifestyle needs. If
you spend a larger part of the day at office or school and if your job involves a lot of
travelling, you should go for portable nebulizers as they are battery-operated and can be
used on the go rather effortlessly.

balance and can't walk very far. When she uses a wheelchair, she can't push it herself.
Fortunately, Mona has a wonderful service dog named Sam. A service dog is a dog that has
been trained to assist someone who has a physical problem.
Sam lets Mona lean on him when she walks. He also pulls her wheelchair and turns lights on
and off. When Mona drops something, Sam picks it up. He even pulls her socks off at night.
Sam also helps Mona with everyday tasks at school. He carries her books from class to class
in a special backpack. He puts Mona's completed assignments in her teachers' homework
trays. In the lunchroom he throws away her trash. 2. Besides making Mona less dependent
on other people, Sam helps her lead a fuller life. Mona's classmates flock around Sam like
geese. This has helped her make friends. Sam also helps Mona be more active. With his aid,
she raised over 500 Rials in a walk-a-thon for her local humane society. Because of Sam,
Mona doesn't have to ask people for help. Sam brings her closer to other kids. And he also
helps her contribute to her community. In the lunchroom he throws away her trash. 2.
