WELCOME TO

JOHN HERRIN, DIRECTOR

Welcome to Cornerstone twenty-eleven, or

should I say twenty-eight?! This is our 28th annual gathering and what a week it is going to be great concerts, fellowship, and fun, all while exploring our faith and what it means to be a follower of Jesus. We kick off Main Stage on Wednesday night with Andy Hunter leading us in a giant dance party. There are not that many firsts left for us, but this will definitely rank right up there as a night to remember. I havent heard the phrase in a number of years, but back in the late 60s and early 70s, when todays Jesus Movement began, I was a part of many Jesus Rallies. We would rent the local gym or high school auditorium and play rock n roll and share our newfound faith. It was an exciting time as revival swept across the nation and thousands who had been searching found what they were looking for. It has been 40 years since Time Magazine featured a psychedelic rendition of Jesus on the cover announcing that the Jesus Movement had come of age. Well, were bringing it all back Thursday with our own Jesus Rally with Classic Petra, Phil Keaggy, Resurrection Band, Randy Stonehill, Daniel Amos, Barry Mcguire, E Band, Servant and Sheep. This is your chance to participate in a historic gathering of pioneer artists and experience a once in a lifetime event. With over 18 stages and 200 bands you will discover many new artists this week and enjoy hours of longtime favorites. A few of the highlights in store for us are The

GALLERY STAGE

For many Cornerstone fans, the Gallery Stage functions as a festival within
a festival. Stop by any time of day, grab a great cup of coffee, and discover emerging artists alongside classic Cornerstone favorites. Or, like many veteran fans, settle in and spend the whole event at this intimate, comfortable and eclectic venue. A few highlights this year include the return of Dension Witmer, Saviour Machine, Psalters, and Anchor & Braille. Also, we heard a rumor theres going to be an open Resurrection Band rehearsal Wednesday at 8 p.m. featuring additional songs theyre not playing at the Jesus Rally Thursday night.

CSTONEXCHANGE
Cornerstone is about more than just the music...
From the beginning, Cornerstone has been interested in the arts and culture, social concerns and contemporary thought, public policy and practical spirituality. This vital conversation continues in cstoneXchange: an exchange of ideas, but not just ideas images, too, poetry and prose, participation with proclamation, involving body, mind and soul. You wont find all the answers here, but lots of great questions and plenty of room to ask your own. Northern Seminary is partnering with Cornerstone to provide seminary courses and anyone can apply. If you are already planning to attend Cornerstone, why not earn credit and expand your skills in ministry as well? Any seminar with the S@C logo next to it qualifies for this wonderful opportunity.

Atonement: Jesus & An Angry God?

Chad Meister (3 sessions) The central issue of Jesus Atonement is that through Him we are brought to God (our at-one-ment with God). Many Christians today see this work of Jesus as payment to an angry God: God demanded blood, and Jesus paid God what was owed. But this relatively recent view (500 years old) raises a number of troubling problems, including the idea that God demands violence. This seminar offers a historical overview of the Atonement, explores the pros and cons of several different Atonement positions held today, with a critical look at sacred violence.

Chad Meister is Professor of Philosophy at Bethel College and has written a range of books including Evil: A Guide for the Perplexed, Christian Thought: A Historical Introduction (with James Stump), The Cambridge Companion to Christian Philosophical Theology (with Charles Taliaferro), and (with William Lane Craig) God is Great, God is Good: Why Believing in God is Reasonable and Responsible (2010 Christianity Today Book of the Year).

Submitting To Scripture: Women, Revelation & Authority

Mimi Haddad (3 sessions) Does Scripture teach that males are Gods appointed leaders in Church and home? If so, should we expect to see less abuse, rather than more in countries, churches, or organizations where males hold authority over females? Likewise, if Scripture teaches female submission, we would expect to find examples in the Bible. This course will examine the Biblical and historical evidence as to whether Gods women were as submissive as some think.

Dr. Mimi Haddad, president of Christians for Biblical Equality, has written and spoken widely on gender issues and the Christian faith. She holds a Ph.D. in Historical Theology from the University of Durham, England and is an adjunct assistant professor at Bethel University and an adjunct professor at North Park Theological Seminary, Chicago, Illinois.

Adoption Workshop

Alien Worlds: All Creatures Great And Small (And Weird)
Stephen Matheson (3 sessions) The aliens of our imagination range from the sublime to the ridiculous, and yet the reality of life in our universe includes creatures as bizarre as most sci-fi visions. Come and explore life at the fringes: alien worlds of possibility in distant locales of our universe, alien worlds of the past from distant epochs of history, and alien worlds of weirdness living right here and now. How do these assemblages of life affect our own Christian views of Creation and the living world? Bring your imagination and your voice.

Zombies On Jeopardy! Brains, Minds & Human Nature

Stephen Matheson (3 sessions) What does it mean to be human? is the Ultimate Bonus Round Question: answers tend to focus on the mind (consciousness, thought, moral reflection, etc). Yet advances in brain science and robotics are raising interesting questions about the nature of human nature. Can a robot have thoughts? Can non-human animals be conscious? Is the human brain merely a meat computer? And what about that zombie apocalypse? Lets have some fun with brains, before a) the robots take over or b) zombies eat our brains.

Steve Matheson, Ph.D., professor of biology at Calvin College, conducts lab research and writes for a variety of audiences on topics at the crossroads of science and faith. Some of his writing can be found at his blog, Quintessence of Dust, and at BioLogos, a pro-evolution Christian organization founded by Dr. Francis Collins, director of the Human Genome Project.

Philosophy 101: For The Love Of Wisdom

James Stump (3 sessions) Popular portrayals of philosophy sometimes make it out to be senseless fussing about irrelevant questions: if a tree falls in the forest ? Other times philosophy is treated as something dangerous that will mess up your mind. Even the Apostle Paul warned the Colossians about philosophy and empty deceit (though he proved himself to be a capable philosopher at the Areopagus in Athens). What is philosophy really all about? This seminar will introduce philosophy as the love of wisdom. Well look at what kinds of questions philosophers ask and how they attempt to answer them, remembering that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Science & Religion: Friends, Foes Or Indifferent?

James Stump (3 sessions) Science and religion are two of the most dominant forces shaping our understanding of the world today. Do they offer competing or complementary explanations? In this seminar well start by examining the methods and purposes of science and religion, including the relevance of the Bible for the conversation. Then well consider fine-tuning and other arguments of natural theology; specifically, well ask whether we can argue to supernatural conclusions from natural premises. Finally, well wade into the evolution-creation debate, taking care to distinguish the science of evolution from the philosophy of naturalism.

James Stump teaches at and directs the philosophy program at Bethel College. He is the author (with Chad Meister) of Christian Thought: A Historical Introduction. He was a fellow in the Templeton-Oxford Seminars in Science and Religion from 2003-2005 and is the editor (with Alan Padgett) of the forthcoming Blackwell Companion to Science and Christianity.

Transformed Minds: Absolute Truth In A World Of Change

Olgalvaro Bastos (3 sessions) We live in days of great and rapid change. History is leading us out of Modernity into something we dont yet understand and its hard to see how an immutable and absolute Word of God finds a place in such a constantly moving, changing new reality. This seminar grapples with the problem of finding solid ground amid the shifting paradigms the same old way: in being transformed by the renewing of our minds.

Olgalvaro Bastos is communications director for Salt of Church Ministry in Uberlndia, Brazil, working with church leaders across Latin America. He also works with Go To The Nations Mission Project and is on the coordination team of Tribal Generation.

Come join Deb Strahan and Dee Murphy to talk about some of your experiences and have the support of others who have learned some life lessons while walking alongside a loved one with a mental illness. As in years past, there will be chocolate and Kleenex.

Debra Strahan and Deelight Murphy each have close family members with mental illness and have been leading family support groups at Cornerstone Festival since 2007.

The Shape Of A Living Faith: Belief & Behavior
Sondra Wheeler (6 sessions) What is the relationship between faith and conduct? This seminar jumps into a question debated since the earliest days of the Church. Well consider the Biblical texts and traditions to see what they have to teach about a life of faith: how we know what it looks like, how we grow into people who can embody such fidelity in our own lives.

Sondra Wheeler is Martha Ashby Carr Professor of Christian Ethics at Wesley Theological Seminary. Shes the author of Wealth as Peril and Obligation: The New Testament on Possessions (Wm. B. Eerdmans, 1995), Stewards of Life: Bioethics and Pastoral Care (Abingdon, 1996), and The Love We Were Made For (Jossey Bass 2007).

Married and Lovin It

Tina & John Herrin (3 sessions) Fall in love and never get up! Well discuss steps in building a marriage and love that will last a lifetime. What is love? How can we find guides for true communication? Can we fight fair? What are some keys to unlocking a love that lasts? (Married couples only, please; limited to 30 couples.)

Tina and John Herrin have been married for 39 years, with three children and four grandkids. Tina has a M.Div. from North Park Theological Seminary and has counseled and taught on marriage and relationships for three decades. John is the Cornerstone Festival director.

Sex, Dating, and Love: Connecting the Dots

Wendi Kaiser (3 sessions) Explore the delicate dance of vulnerability, risk, and hope in finding that special person we all desire. Straightforwardly answering the toughest question, or encouraging her audience to answer the questions for her, Wendis approach is rooted in Scripture and personal experience.

Wendi Kaiser shares lead vocals with husband Glenn in Resurrection Band and has lectured on spirituality, relationships and sexuality around the world with candor, compassion and humor.

The Heart and Business of Music

John J. Thompson (5 sessions) Yeah, he works at EMI in Nashville these days, but John J. Thompson is a Cornerstone lifer with a heart for independent, boundary pushing, truthful, soul-feeding music and the people who make it and love it. Over the span of three classes and two panel discussions he (and some suprise guests) will be bringing wisdom and advice for artists to improve

The Outsiders: The Scandalous Women In Jesus Genealogy
JPUSA Pastors (5 sessions) The women in Jesus genealogy all were, in one way or another, outsiders. They were foreigners, unwed mothers, women who all had something extraordinary, odd or even scandalous about them. Join us as we hear about and discuss these remarkable women: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba and Mary.

JPUSA Pastors Tina Herrin, Victor Williams, Tom Cameron, Wendi Kaiser, and Neil Taylor have been living, working, and mentoring at Jesus People USA for more than 30 years.

Taking Jesus Public: Off-The-Map Evangelism

Jim Henderson (6 sessions) Jesus lived his life out in the open in public. The current leaders of the spirituality conversation in America are Oprah, Deepak Chopra, Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck. Shouldnt followers of Jesus be at the center of this conversation? Its time for us to regain influence and reshape the public conversation on spirituality. Its time to Take Jesus Public.

Jim Henderson leads Off the Map, a community of spiritual anthropologists dedicated to spreading Otherlyness the spirituality of serving. He authored Evangelism Without Additives and Jim and Casper Go to Church, and is a contributor to The Outsider Interviews.

Icons: Windows To The Divine

Joseph Malham (3 sessions) As people of the Incarnation, Christians have used the image in art as a vehicle of prayer both in liturgy and private devotion. With clear distinction between veneration and the worship due God alone, this seminar will explore the history, meaning, materials and spirituality of the icon. In keeping with that spirituality, this exploration will involve participation, in prayer, along with a demonstration of icon-writing, a process whose every step is sacred and symbolic.

Iconographer and writer Joseph Malham has been artist in residence at St. Gregory the Great Church in Chicago for ten years. Malham studied art history in Rome and learned the sacred and ancient art of Byzantine iconography under respected masters.

The Kingdom of God Is Alive in Blood Alley

sandy ramsey (1 session) sometimes it is easy to lose the spirituality of serving in the mundane process of helping others. yet, if we can look below the surface of what we see and hear, we find the heart of Jesus for the poor and hurting, and discover new wells of strength and encouragement for doing this very important work.

Sandy Ramsey has spent the last three decades housing the homeless in the inner city of Chicago at Cornerstone Community Outreach. CCO has 450 guests men, women, and children each night.

Church Politics: Everything They Didnt Teach You In Seminary - A Survivors Story
Bob Adams (6 sessions) Serving in a church is the best and worst of callings. Like St. Augustine said, The Church is a whore, but she is my mother. As with any human endeavor, politics are part of the package and they can get especially sticky in an atmosphere that is supposed to be above all that. How do we cope with painful and complex interpersonal situations that inevitably arise in a church setting? Can we move past the hurts and remain open to serving others?

Bob Adams was unexpectedly promoted from assistant to pastor of a church, with all its backstage dramas and history and more than once! From these and other experiences hes learned much about keeping the vision in the midst of the craziness.

Goth, Punk, and Oi: Subculture Youth Ministry

Northern Seminary Staff (3 sessions) Many usually compassionate Christians cringe when gothic, hardcore, and punk youth (from both within or outside of the congregation) step onto the fringes of congregational life. The assumption hangs heavy in the air: arent they supposed to be healed of this brokenness and incorporated into the mainstream culture? Arent goths dancing dangerously on the edge of witchcraft or satanism? Isnt the anger of the hardcore scene antithetical to following Christ?

Cornerstone offers the opportunity for a personal subculture immersion experience in order to develop authentic relationships with hardcore, punk and goth youth. Participants in this workshop will meet leaders in subculture scenes. The learning and dialogue will enable participants to 1) begin to flesh out a Biblical theological response to subculture scenes and 2) acquire skill which will translate into local churches developing authentic relationships and ministry to subculture youth.

Green My Hood: Environmental Justice In Urban Communities

Leroy Barber (3 sessions) These workshops will take a look at environmental injustices that exist within urban communities, and share solutions created by the people living in these communities.

Leroy Barber has dedicated more than 20 years to eradicating poverty, confronting homelessness, restoring local neighborhoods, healing racism, and living what Dr. King called The beloved community. He is currently the President of Mission Year, a national urban initiative introducing young people to missional and communal living in cities for one year of their lives.

Second, a survey of Christian blogging and look ahead down the online stream. Third, a look at existential migration as an alternative to short term missions how to survive, and how to make an impact.

Lanky, svelte New Zealander Andrew Jones has been involved in missions for 25 years, helping launch fresh expressions of church in pubs, coffee shops, homes and cyberspace where he led the way with his own blog, Tall Skinny Kiwi.

GENERAL INFO
HOW CAN I GET THERE?
Driving directions are available under INFORMATION on our website. The closest commercial airport is in Peoria IL about 50 miles from the grounds. Amtrak trains provide service to Macomb IL about 20 miles from the grounds. Greyhound stops in Galesburg IL about 32 miles from the grounds. If you come by plane, train, or bus, you must arrange your own transportation from the station to the festival site; check out the ride board under INFORMATION at our website.

WHEN SHOULD I ARRIVE?

The first 1500 advance ticket holders, whose tickets are NOT marked Front Gate, will be able to enter the campgrounds through the Back Gate (see Road Map on p. 54 for directions) starting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday June 28. The Back Gate will close at Noon and only be used for exiting and re-entry for the rest of the week (daily from 8 a.m. to midnight). All children must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear a MODEST swimsuit. Swimming across the lake is strictly prohibited. You may use your own canoe (no motors allowed), but you must take along one floating device (i.e., life vest, cushion) for each person. These guidelines will be strictly enforced. Disobeying these guidelines could lead to you being asked to leave the grounds.

CAN I DRIVE MY VEHICLE TO THE SHOWS AND SEMINARS?

No. Please be prepared to walk. Only golf carts and bicycles are permitted to drive about the grounds. All vehicles must be parked on the grass at least 3 feet away from the edge of the roads. Once your campsite is set up, we ask you to either not drive until you pack up and leave, or else park your car in one of the designated day lots. This restriction includes all ATVs and motorcycles. Vehicle passes for the handicapped are available from registration.

SO I CAN DRIVE A GOLF CART ON THE GROUNDS?

Yes, but drivers of golf carts must have a permit from the festival office, be 21 or older and have a valid drivers license. Permits will only be available for those with health issues. Whether you rent or bring your own, you will also be required to obey all golf cart regulations. Any unsafe or reckless driving behavior will result in a revoked permit and an impounded cart for the duration of the festival.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I BRING?

A tent, sleeping bag, Bible, pen and notebook, spending money, lantern or flashlight, water containers, campstove or grill (if cooking out), cooking utensils, dishpan or basin, table, cooler, canopy, umbrella, sweater or jacket, lawn chairs, campstool or blanket for concert seating and campsite, earplugs, modest swimsuit, towel, rain gear, sunblock, insect repellent, walking shoes, boots or sandals for rain, strollers or wagons for children.

CAN I BRING MY PET?

No. Pets are not allowed on the grounds. The festival office can give you a list of local kennels.

CAN I BRING FIREWORKS?

NO FIREWORKS OR LARGE BONFIRES PERMITTED on the grounds. This policy will be strictly enforced.

WHAT ABOUT ALCOHOL AND DRUGS?

This is an alcohol-and-drug-free event. Absolutely no alcohol or illegal drugs will be allowed on the grounds. Anyone found to be in possession of these will be removed from the grounds and/or turned over to the police.

CAN I BRING STUFF TO SELL TO OTHER CAMPERS?

No. In all fairness and courtesy to the artists, exhibitors, and vendors who are at the festival at considerable expense to themselves, we ask you not to sell merchandise or buy from those selling informally, and that youd please notify security when you see this taking place.
