Arc Length and Surface Revolution

The document defines arc length and surface area of revolution. For arc length, given a function f(x) on an interval [a,b], the arc length is defined as the integral of the square root of 1 plus the derivative of f squared, with respect to x. A similar formula is given if the function is written in terms of y. For surface area of revolution, given a function f(x) on [a,b] revolved about an axis, the surface area is 2π times the integral of r(x) times the square root of 1 plus the derivative of f squared, where r(x) is the distance to the axis of revolution. An analogous formula is given

Definition of the area of surface of revolution

Given y = f(x) continuous on the interval [a,b], the area
S of surface of revolution formed by revolving the graph
of f about a horizontal or vertical axis is

S = 2 ∫ 𝑟 𝑥 1 + [𝑓′(𝑥)] 𝑑𝑥  y is written in terms of x
where r(x) is the distance between the graph of f and the axis of revolution.
If x = g(y) on the interval [c,d], then the surface area is

S = 2 ∫ 𝑟 𝑦 1 + [𝑔′(𝑦)] 𝑑𝑦  x is written in terms of y
where r(y) is the distance between the graph of g and the axis of revolution.
