Kinds of Forces
A force is a push or pull that starts, stops, or changes the direction of an object. It is the action
exerted by a body on another, which is manifested on its motion.
Actions Observation/Changes
1. Squeeze a clay
2. Stretch a rubber band
3. Roll a ball, and then block
the ball with your feet.
4. Push an object at rest
Kinds of Forces
1. Gravitational Force is a force that pulls objects toward one another. It is the universal force
that affects the bigger and smaller object. The strength of gravitational force depends on
the amount of mass in an object and the distance between objects.

makes things fall.
2. Magnetic Force is a force that causes objects to attract or repel each other. It is the force
shown when magnets of iron are attracted to each other. Magnetic force is also the force
of attraction or repulsion that occurs between electrically charged particles.
3. Electric Force is the force that exists between charged particles. Objects with different
charges attract each other, and objects with the same charge repel each other. Electric
force causes some objects to come together and others to stay apart. It holds particles
together that make up matter.
4. Nuclear Force is the force that holds the particles in the nucleus together. The strong nuclear
force holds the nuclear particles together by holding the quarks together. Quarks are smaller
particles in neutrons and protons. Weak nuclear force is the force that holds particles within
proton and neutrons together.

5. Frictional Force – Friction is a force that opposes motion between two surfaces touching
each other. It causes the object that moves along a surface to slow down and eventually
stop.
1. A man is climbing a tree. What force is the man exerting? In what direction is the force
being exerted?

3. A force is needed to send a football across the field. What is the source of the force?

4. The force exerted by a dog overcomes the opposing force of a reluctant boy. What
forces are exerted by the boy and the dog?

5. A boy and a girl are pushing their toy box with combined effort in the same direction.
a.) Are the children exerting a balanced or unbalanced force?

b.) If the boy pushes with a greater force opposite the direction of the force exerted by the
girl, in what direction will the box move?
