FOREWORD

This self-learning kit will serve as a guide in investigating

the characteristics and properties of sound. It will be your
aid as you learn new ideas and enrich your existing
knowledge about science concepts.

In this learning kit the learners will gain knowledge in

investigating characteristics and properties of sound.

I. WHAT HAPPENED

PRE-ACTIVITIES/PRETEST

ACTIVITY 1

SOFT OR LOUD
Directions: Put a check mark (/) on the box that produces
sound. Identify if the sound produced is soft or loud. Do this in
your notebook by writing only the correct answer.

ACTIVITY 2

Directions: Read the following statements carefully and
choose the correct answer to complete the thought inside the
box below. Write only the correct answer in your notebook.

echo noise sound

volume echolocation loudness

1.___________ is the measure of how strong a sound seems to be.

2.___________ is the transmission of sound waves to locate objects.

3.___________ is reflected or returned sound.

4.___________ is a type of energy made by vibrations.

5. ___________is undesirable sound which disturbs the activities of

human or animal life.

6. ___________is the softness or loudness of sound.

II. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Investigating Characteristics and Properties of

Sound

Sound is a type of energy made by vibration. When any of the

object vibrates, it causes movement in the air particles. These
particles bump into the particles close to them, which makes them
vibrate too causing them to bump into more air particles. This
movement, called sound waves, keeps going until they run out of
energy. If our ear is within a range of the vibrations, you hear the
sound.

Picture a stone thrown into a still
body of water or a drop of water was
dropped into a still basin filled with water.
The rings of waves expand indefinitely
until the water becomes calm or still
again. The same is true with the sound.
When the vibrations are slow, it creates a
soft sound. The softness and/or loudness
of sound is called volume. Source:https://cdn1.byjus.com/wpcontent/uploads/2

reflection_2-06.jpg

Loudness is a measure of how

strong a sound seems to us. If we apply
greater force in an object, we produce
loud sound. If we apply lesser sound in an
object, we produce soft sound.
If you are far from the source of the
sound, it will not sound as loud as if you
were standing nearer to it. The sound is
heard louder if we are near the source
and gradually fades or becomes softer Source:https://cdn1.byjus.com/wpcontent/uploads/2

as we move away from it. reflection_2-06.jpg

Noise is an undesirable sound which disturbs the activities of

human or animal life. It can distract us or break our concentration.

Echo is the reflected or returned

sound. When you shout, part of the sound
waves you created hit an opposing hard
wall or surface. Part of the sound was
reflected by the wall that is why you
heard the same sound again.
We cannot hear an echo if we are
too close to a big hard wall. The sound Source:https://cdn1.byjus.com/wpcontent/uploads/2

we made bounces back very fast and it reflection_2-06.jpg
mixes with the original sound. We cannot tell which is the original
sound and which is the echo.

Bats live just about everywhere.
They hunt at night, sleep in hidden
places like caves and old buildings
during the day, and for the most part
feed on insects, pollen, flowers, and
fruits.

Most species of bats rely on

echolocation to help them find their
food. Therefore, it is no problem at all Source:https://askabiologist.asu.edu/sites/defa

for them to be able to catch insects in ult/files/echolocation.jpg

complete darkness.

Echolocation is the transmission of sound waves to locate

objects.
REMEMBER THESE!
The sounds that you hear may vary in different ways. The
volume of a sound depends on the strength of vibrations. The
application of a stronger force causes a louder volume of sound
as in the case of the rumbling thunder. A lesser force makes a
softer sound as in the soft breeze of a fine day.
The sound does not lose some of its energy as it travels
through air. The energy just spreads out to cover a larger area like
ripples in a pond or river.
When a sound comes in contact with different materials like
walls or carpets, they are either reflected or absorbed. Some
materials reflect sound and cause echoes.
Bats use echoes to help them find their food. Whales use
echoes to move and find their way of the deep ocean.
The study of echoes is very important because our navies use
a form of echolocation called radar to locate such things as other
ships and the sea floor.

ACTIVITY

What you need:

• lively music
• CD player/cellphone
• enclosed area/ headphone/headset
• observation sheet

What to do:
1. In an enclosed area, play a lively music. Set the volume to the
softest level that is clear enough for you to hear. This will be the
starting volume for you. Record it in your data sheet like the one
shown below. (Copy the table in our notebook). Put OK for
tolerable level and NOT OK for intolerable level.

2. Adjust the volume level at constant rate.

3. Fill out the corresponding table for your observation. Do it in
your science notebook.

EVALUATION

A. TRUE or FALSE

Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is correct. Write FALSE if

the statement is wrong. Do this in our notebook.

source.

and determine their location.
______3. Only animals have the ability to use echolocation.
______4. The sea floor is mapped using echolocation.
______5. Some individuals have developed to use echolocation
and, thus, enable them to see even if they are blind.

B. MULTIPLE CHOICE

Directions: Choose the letter of the correct answer. Do it in

your notebook.

1. Which of the following produces soft sound?

a. drum set c. jet
b. whistle d. buzzing bee

2. Which of the following produces the loudest sound?

a. jet c. telephone
b. piano d. cry of a baby

3. Why does sound become weaker or fainter as it moves away

from the observer?
a. The sound is lowered by the operator.
b. The sound spreads to cover a smaller area.
c. The sound spreads to cover a larger area.
d. The sound is already absorbed by the environment.

a. flute: loudest sound c. whisper: soft sound
b. cricket: no sound d. ambulance siren: soft sound

5. Which is TRUE about the characteristics of sound?

a. Sound could either be soft or loud.
b. The loudness of sound decreases as it moves nearer the
observer.
