Compose an Informative Essay

I. Learning Competency

Compose an Informative Essay EN7WC-IV-a-2.2

II. Background Information for Learners

It is very common nowadays to encounter fake news in the television, social

media and other sources that is why we need to evaluate our information first before
posting it. Validating the information is one way to avoid it. In this learning kit you will
explore ways on how to make an informative essay.
What is an Informative Essay?
An informative essay educates your reader on a topic. They can have one of
several functions: to define a term, compare and contrast something, analyze data,
or provide a how-to. They do not, however, present an opinion or try to persuade
your reader.

How to Write an Informative Essay

1. Brainstorm Ideas
Choose a topic you feel strongly about is a good idea. Brainstorming is the
way forward for the top result when learning how to start an informative essay
successfully. As it will allow you to create a general outline of your informative essay
and help organize your thoughts accordingly.

2. Choosing a Topic
After narrowing down your options, it has finally come time to choose the most
appropriate topic. Remember, the selected subject at hand should not be TOO
BROAD nor TOO NARROW.

1
3. Crank Out Some Informative Research
Gather information and use various sources including primary and secondary
ones! Primary sources are physical pieces of evidence relating to the topic at hand.
Secondary sources are articles and papers

4. Use a variety of sources, and validate their reliability

Do not only use one type of source (example: Website Articles). Provide
different kinds of sources to make your informative essay well-rounded!

Purpose in Informative Writing

 Sharing new information with readers

 Describing a process
 Clarifying a concept
 Giving an explanation of why or how
 Detailing parts of a greater whole

Informative Essay Outline Structure

1. Introduction - is vital in order to catch the reader’s attention. The introductory

paragraph in an informative essay will usually start with a strong sentence.
Every informative essay is based on a great thesis. Its objective is to give a
sort of navigation for your essay and steers you on the right path.
Example:
According to World Health Organization, Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is
an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.

Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to
moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older
people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease,
diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious
illness.

2. Body paragraphs
The main aim of this section is to give a deeper exploration into your topic.
The body of your informative essay should develop on the opinions that were
presented in your introduction. Body paragraphs consist of distinct opinions that
develop or support the essay.
Example:
First is social distancing or also called “physical distancing”. It means keeping
a safe space between yourself and other people who are not from your household.
To practice social or physical distancing, stay at least 6 feet (about 2 arm lengths)
from other people who are not from your household in both indoor and outdoor
spaces.

Second is hand washing. This is one of the simplest and most effective
means of preventing the spread of flu and other infectious diseases Hand washing
also known as hand hygiene, is the act of cleaning one's hands with soap and water

2
to remove viruses/bacteria/microorganisms, dirt, grease, or other harmful and
unwanted substances stuck to the hands.

Lastly, wearing face mask is a way to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.
Masks, or facial coverings, are mainly to prevent the person wearing the mask from
generating droplets from breathing, coughing, and sneezing. It is these droplets that
can carry a virus from one person to another. If you are sick it is recommended to
stay home and not go to public places even with a mask or facial covering on.

3. Conclusion
The concluding paragraph will ensure many things: it will reaffirm the thesis
statement in addition to directing a finishing objective for the reader. In informative
essay writing, conclusions should be exact and consistent. A short summary
signifying the importance of the topic is always a good way to end. The main rule you
should follow is that the closing part of the essay should cover the justification of how
the reader can benefit from the conclusions.
Example:
The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed
about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protect yourself
and others from infection by physical distancing, wearing face mask, washing your
hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently and not touching your face.

The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge

from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you
also practice respiratory etiquette at all times.
