Pre-Calculus
Module 1:
Illustrating the Different Types
of Conic Sections

LU_Pre-Calculus_Module1
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you
to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in

each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this
module or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for
better understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to
answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided
for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the
exercises and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing
each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in

answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher
or facilitator.

Thank you.

Target

Conic sections are still an interesting subject because of its

importance. In the past, conic sections were studied from purely geometric
point of view. The modern approach in dealing with conic section combines
geometric reasoning and algebraic computations using graphs of certain
types of equations in Cartesian coordinate system.

This learning material will provide you with information and activities
that will help you understand the conic sections like circle, parabola,
ellipse, hyperbola and degenerate cases.

After going through this alternative instructional resource learning

material, you are expected to:
1. illustrate the different types of conic sections: parabola, ellipse, circle,
hyperbola, and degenerate cases. STEM_PC11AG-Ia-1
Learning Objectives:

1. Define the different types of conic sections;

2. Identify the different types of conic sections;
3. illustrate the different types of conic sections: parabola, ellipse, circle,
hyperbola, and degenerate cases.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF CONIC SECTIONS?

There are four main conic sections, depending on the number of generators
that are parallel to the cutting plane.
❖ If the cutting plane is parallel to one and only one generator, the
curve is a parabola.
❖ If the cutting plane is not parallel to any generator, the curve is an
ellipse. If the plane is not parallel to any generator, but is
perpendicular to the axis, the ellipse becomes a circle.
❖ If the cutting plane is parallel to two generators, the curve is a
hyperbola.

WHAT IS A DEGENERATE CONIC SECTION?

A degenerate conic is either a point, a line, or two intersecting lines.

This is not curve but a result of the intersection of the plane and the double right
circular cone. This is why it is referred to as degenerate conic section.
