T.E. Lawrence of Arabia - Seven Pillars of Wisdom + more (14 books)

T. E. LAWRENCE ("Lawrence of Arabia") (1888-1935) was a British archaeological

scholar, military strategist, and author best known for his legendary war
activities in the Middle East during World War I and for SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM
(1926), his account of the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turks in 1916-18.
Lawrence became a mythic figure in his own lifetime even before he published his
own version of the legend. More than a military leader and inspirational force
behind the Arab Revolt, he was a superb tactician and a highly influential
theoretician of guerrilla warfare.

Medieval military architecture was his first interest, and he pursued it in its
historical settings, studying Crusader castles in France, Syria and Palestine and
submitting a thesis on the subject while still an undergraduate in 1910 (it was
posthumously published in 1936 as CRUSADER CASTLES). In their famous survey of
southern Palestine for the Palestine Exploration Fund in 1914, published as THE
WILDERNESS OF ZIN, Lawrence and fellow archaeologist C. Leonard Woolley covered
large tracts of the Negev Desert, studying monuments of numerous periods from the
prehistoric to the Islamic.

SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM (1926) is an autobiographical account of his experiences

during the Arab Revolt of 1916-18. With the support of Emir Faisal and his
tribesmen, he helped organise and carry out attacks on Ottoman forces from Aqaba to
Damascus. The book is replete with incident and spectacle, filled with rich
character portrayals and a tense introspection that bares the author’s own complex
mental and spiritual transformation. Though inexact and subjective, it combines
the scope of heroic epic with the closeness of autobiography. Winston Churchill
famously said the book "ranks with the greatest books ever written in the English
language. As a narrative of war and adventure it is unsurpassable." REVOLT IN THE
DESERT (1927) was an abridged version of SEVEN PILLARS.

In 1922, Lawrence retreated from public life and spent the years until 1935 serving
as an enlisted man, mostly in the Royal Air Force, with a brief stint in the Army.
During this time, he wrote THE MINT, an unfinished memoir of his experiences in the
RAF that was published posthumously in 1936. Its explicitness horrified Whitehall
officialdom and the text never went beyond circulation in typescript to his
friends. He issued two translations in his lifetime: THE ODYSSEY of Homer (1932),
published under the name T. E. Shaw, and THE FOREST GIANT by Adrien Le Corbeau
(1924), published under the name J. H. Ross. Finally, two collections of his
correspondence and literary criticism (introductions, book reviews, and motley
pieces), relatively neglected by his many biographers, are also included here.
