Lawrence (T.e.)
Lawrence (T.e.)
Medieval military architecture was his first interest, and he pursued it in its
historical settings, studying Crusader castles in France, Syria and Palestine and
submitting a thesis on the subject while still an undergraduate in 1910 (it was
posthumously published in 1936 as CRUSADER CASTLES). In their famous survey of
southern Palestine for the Palestine Exploration Fund in 1914, published as THE
WILDERNESS OF ZIN, Lawrence and fellow archaeologist C. Leonard Woolley covered
large tracts of the Negev Desert, studying monuments of numerous periods from the
prehistoric to the Islamic.
In 1922, Lawrence retreated from public life and spent the years until 1935 serving
as an enlisted man, mostly in the Royal Air Force, with a brief stint in the Army.
During this time, he wrote THE MINT, an unfinished memoir of his experiences in the
RAF that was published posthumously in 1936. Its explicitness horrified Whitehall
officialdom and the text never went beyond circulation in typescript to his
friends. He issued two translations in his lifetime: THE ODYSSEY of Homer (1932),
published under the name T. E. Shaw, and THE FOREST GIANT by Adrien Le Corbeau
(1924), published under the name J. H. Ross. Finally, two collections of his
correspondence and literary criticism (introductions, book reviews, and motley
pieces), relatively neglected by his many biographers, are also included here.
