Dear South Hardin Schools Family,
There have been some questions and potential misinformation circulating in our communities around
graduation requirements and Commencement proceedings for the Eldora-New Providence
Community School District and South Hardin High School.
In an effort to provide some clarity, I'd like to share the following information. (Please note that we are
not able to discuss any individual student's situation due to the Family Education Rights & Privacy
Act, better known as FERPA.)
‘The ENP School District established the current commencement policy in April of 2008 and last
reviewed it in May of 2018. The Commencement Policy, 505.7, states: Students who have met the
requirements for graduation will be allowed to participate in the commencement proceedings provided
they abide by the proceedings organized by the schoo! district. It is the responsibility of the principal
to solicit input from each graduating class regarding the proceedings for their commencement. Failure
of a student to participate in commencement will not be a reason for withholding the student's final
progress report or diploma certifying the stucent’s completion of high school
Further, the graduation requirements policy, 505.5, states that students need 52 credits to graduate.
Itwas last reviewed in May of 2018 and last revised in April of 2022 where the credits remained the
same, but the specific course financial literacy was added as one of the 52 credits required for
graduation by the lowa Department of Education for graduation from an accredited schoo! district.
Each year, we have students who do not meet the graduation requirements for a variety of reasons.
While they are not eligible to participate in the commencement ceremony, we do make every effort
to recognize seniors in multiple ways throughout their senior year including “senior night’ for each
activity, a banquet at the end of each activity season, senior awards night, junior/senior prom,
‘community baccalaureate service, and participation in the senior class picture.
As a district, we value each and every student who walks through our door. We greatly appreciate
parent and community support in upholding policy and procedures which are designed to serve all
students,
Sincerely,
Dr. Adam Zellmer
