L, Major L, Minor

The document calculates pump parameters like velocity, Reynolds number, friction loss, head loss, specific speed, power, and efficiency based on given flow rate and other specifications. It also calculates suction head using minor and major losses between the cooling tower and pump.

Discussion

The table of results above shows a summary of the calculation of the pump. With the assumed to flow
m3 m
rate to be 0.004 , velocity was determined to be1.87 . With the help of the velocity, the Reynolds
s s
number was found to be 97307.2 which implies that the flow in the pipe was turbulent since it is above
4000.

The Relative roughness of a pipe is it’s roughness divided by it’s internal diameter which was found to be
0.000861 which was then used in the moody chart to determine friction loss of 0.023.

The major loss h L, major and minor loss h L, minor of the plant where found to be 13.90 m and 4.16 m
respectively. The pressure drop due to friction was found to be 136109.3 Pa using the formula
2
fLp v
∆ P= . With the velocity and elevation being zero because of the same pipe diameter and
2D
elevation of pumping loop, the head loss was found to be 31.95m . The pump maximum head on the tag
is 36.5m.

With the relative speed of the impeller given to be 2900rev/min. The specific speed of the pump was
found to be 0.041m/s. The power of the pump was found to be 1.252KW. The current and voltage of the
pump were indicated in the pump tag as 230V and 7.5A, using these two variable, the shaft power was
determined to be 1.725 KW and efficiency of the pump to be 0.73 (73%).

Regarding the suction calculations, The NPS H A . The minor losses were determined by summing up the
minor loss coefficient for the valves, bends and entrance loss between the cooling tower and pump. The
minor loss was determined to be 1.628m and the major loss between the pump and cooling tower was
found to be 0.468m . The vapor pressure of the fluid at 20 ℃ was determined to be 2.34 KPa. The
distance between the cooling tower and pump was measured to be 2.29m. Thus the NPS H A is
18.285m
