Relations and Functions

The document provides information about the classification of functions in mathematics. It discusses the key classifications of functions as one-to-one (injective), onto (surjective), and bijective (both one-to-one and onto). It provides examples of different types of functions and outlines methods to determine if a function is one-to-one, many-to-one, onto, or into.

Classification of Functions

Naming

❖ ONE-ONE functions is also called INJECTIVE function

❖ ONTO function is also called SURJECTIVE function

❖ If a function is both ONE-ONE and ONTO then it is called

BIJECTIVE function.
Method to determine
One-one and Many-one functions

1. If f(x1) = f(x2) implies x1=x2 then f(x) is one one otherwise

many one.

2. Graphically, if a horizontal line can cut the graph of

f(x) only once then f(x) is one-one otherwise many-one

3. Monotonic Functions are always one-one.

Method to determine Onto and Into functions
Find the Range of the given function.

If

Range = Co-Domain

Then, function is onto. Otherwise Into

If then f is

A. one-one-and onto B. one-one but not onto

C. onto but not one-one D. neither one-one nor onto

The function defined as

A. neither Injective nor not surjective B. surjective but not injective

C. injective but not surjective D. none of these

Let function f : R → R be defined by f(x) = 2x + sin x for x 𝝐 R, then f is

A. one-to-one-and onto B. one-to-one-but not onto

C. onto but not one-to-one D. neither one-to-one nor onto

If f(x) = , is one-one function, then

A. 2≤a≤8 B. 1 ≤ a ≤ 2

C. 0≤a≤1 D. none of these

The function f: [0, 3] → [1, 29], defined by f(x) = 2x3 – 15x2 + 36x + 1 is

A. one-one-and onto B. onto but not one-one

C. one-one but not onto D. neither one-one nor onto
