A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics For Grade 8 Linear Equations in Two Variables

The document outlines a detailed lesson plan for an 8th grade mathematics class on linear equations in two variables. The lesson plan aims to teach students to [1] represent situations with equations, [2] define linear equations with two variables, and [3] classify equations as linear or not. The lesson uses puzzles, props, and activities to engage students in forming sample linear equations with two variables and analyzing whether equations have the properties of being linear.

Time: 1 hour

I. Objectives
At the end of the 60-minute lesson, the students should be able to:
A. represent a situation by means of an equation;
B. define linear equations in two variables; and
C. classify whether an equation is a linear equation in two variables or not.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Linear Equation in Two Variables
Materials: linear equation in one variable puzzle; basket with fruits and vegetables; emoji
cards; chalk; chalkboard
Reference: Grade 8 Mathematics Learners’ Module (pages 181-182)
Strategies: Cooperative Learning and Inductive Reasoning

III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
A. Pre-Activity
Daily Routine
Best morning, class! Best morning, Ma’am! Best morning,
classmates! Mabuhay!

Kindly arrange your chairs and pick up

the unnecessary things under and beside
your chairs.

You may take your seat. Thank you, Ma’am.

Do we have any absentee today? None, Ma’am.

Motivation
Before we begin with today’s lesson, I
want you to recall a topic from your
grade 7 class. I will divide the class into
8 groups. Start counting from 1 to 8.

Go to your respective groups and form a

circle within your group.

I have here some puzzle pieces (Please

refer to figure 1 on the last page.). In
each piece, there are equations that have
their solutions on another puzzle piece.
Your group’s task is to complete the
puzzle by solving each equation. Once
you complete the puzzle, there is a
hidden phrase that will be formed.
The group to first complete the puzzle
will get 5 points; 4 points for the second
group; 3 for the third group; and the
fourth-eighth group to complete the
puzzle will get 1 point.

Is there any question? None, Ma’am.

You may start solving your puzzle now.

B. Activity Proper
What phrase did you form from the The phrase that we formed form the puzzle
puzzle pieces? pieces was Linear Equation in One
Variable.

That is correct. Recalling from your

grade 7 lesson, what is a linear equation A linear equation in one variable is an
in one variable? equation that can be written in the form
a x +b=c , where a, b, and c are real
numbers and a ≠ 0.
What is the degree of a linear equation
in one variable? Its degree is 1.

Why?
Because the variable is raised to a power of
1.
Why is it called “in one variable”?
Because there is only one variable present.
Go to the board and give one equation
from the puzzle you formed including its x−1=0
solution. x=1
How was x=1 arrived at?
The Addition Property of Equality was
applied. 1 was added to both sides of the
equation.
How many solutions does a linear
equation in one variable has? It has only one solution.

I have here a basket containing fruits

and vegetables. Suppose in this basket, Let: m=¿ number of mango
there are 8 fruits consisting of mangoes b=¿ number of banana
and bananas, what equation can be m+b=8
formed to represent the fruits that I
have?

Very good. What are the possible

number of mango and banana in my 1 mango and 7 bananas
basket? 2 mangoes and 6 bananas
3 mangoes and 5 bananas
4 mangoes and 4 bananas
5 mangoes and 3 bananas
6 mangoes and 2 bananas
7 mangoes and 1 banana
Can the number of mango be equal to 0?
No.
Why?
Because it was said earlier that the basket
contains mangoes. Having 0 mango means
that there is no mango present in the basket.

Well said. Can the number of banana be

equal to 0? No.

Why?
Because it was said earlier that the basket
contains bananas. Having 0 banana means
that there is no banana present in the basket.

Very good. Suppose in this basket, there

are 6 vegetables consisting of bitter Let: b=¿ number of bitter gourd
gourd and eggplant, what equation can e=¿ number of eggplant
be formed to represent the vegetables b+ e=6
that I have?

What are the possible number of bitter

gourds and eggplants in my basket? 1 bitter gourd and 5 eggplants
2 bitter gourds and 4 eggplants
3 bitter gourds and 3 eggplants
4 bitter gourds and 2 eggplants
5 bitter gourds and 1 eggplant
Can the number of bitter gourd be equal
to 0? No.

Why?
Because it was said earlier that the basket
contains bitter gourds. Having 0 bitter
gourd means that there is no bitter gourd
present in the basket.
Well said. Can the number of eggplants
be equal to 0? No.

Why?
Because it was said earlier that the basket
contains eggplants. Having 0 eggplant
means that there is no eggplant present in
the basket.
Very well said. Connecting the phrase in
the puzzle you formed earlier and the We call the two equations Linear Equations
equations you formed based from the in Two Variables.
two situations, how do you call the
equations you formed?

Why?
Because the equations we formed have two
unknown quantities and the highest
exponent of the variables is 1.
That is correct. A linear equation in two
variables is an equation of the form
ax +by +c =0, where a, b, and c are real
numbers, such that a and b are not both
0.

If a linear equation in one variable has

only one solution, how many solutions
does a linear equation in two variables A linear equation in two variables has
has? infinitely many solutions.

Can you give some examples of linear

equation in two variables?
(Answers may vary.)
How about the equations:
a. y 2−2 z=0
b. 3 √ m−2 n=0
c. 0 x +0 y=10
Are they linear equations in two
variables?
No.
Why?
a. It is not in the first degree.
b. It is not in the first degree.
c. The coefficients of x and y are both 0.
Very good! Do you have any question?
None, Ma’am.
Let us now deepen your understanding
of linear equations in two variables. For
this activity, I will give you a “haha”
and “sad” emoji. For every linear
equation in two variables that I will be
flashing, you are going to raise a “haha”
emoji, if the equation I flashed is not a
linear equation in two variables, raise a
“sad” emoji. Each group will only raise
an emoji once the sound of the bell is
heard. Otherwise, they will lose a turn.

Did you understand?

Yes, Ma’am.
1. x + y=1
2
2. a + b−2=0 1. “haha”
3. 0 x−0 y=3 2. “sad”
4. −2 c−3 d=4 3. “sad”
5. √ 5 m+ √3 n−4=3 4. “haha”
6. 5√ x−3 y=9 5. “haha”
s 6. “sad”
7. +3 t=5 7. “haha”
2
8. m=2 n+5 8. “haha”

C. Post Activity
What is a linear equation in two
variables? A linear equation in two variables is an
equation of the form ax +by +c =0, where
a, b, and c are real numbers, such that a and
b are not both 0.
How many solutions does it have? It has infinitely many solutions.

Well said.

IV. Evaluation
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
On a ¼ sheet of paper, write Yes if the
equation is a linear equation in two variables
and No if not.
1. 2 x−3 y+ 1=0 1. Yes
1 2. No
2. −4 t −6 v + 4=0
3
3. No
3. 0 c +0 d=0 4. No
4. y 2 +2 z =0 5. Yes

V. Assignment
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
For your assignment, search for the meaning
of slope.

That would be all for today. Goodbye, class! Goodbye, Ma’am. Thank you for teaching
us.
