Online Learning Project
Online Learning Project
Technology Standard Addressed: 1.7 Global Collaborator: Students use digital tools to broaden their
perspectives and enrich their learning by collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally
and globally.
Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
Using KidPub, students will pick a story to read from the site. While reading from the site they will be asked
to pick several words from the text that they find interesting. They will be asked to consider figurative
language, connotation vs denotation, etc.
After picking out the words they like, they will define them on a piece of paper to turn in. They will need to
provide a short definition, and an example sentence. Once this has been completed, the students will use their
vocabulary words to write a short story. The story can be about whatever they like as long as it fits into one of
the categories on KidsPub.
After the stories have been completed, they will be turned in and graded. Students will then be given their
stories back to make corrections on. Once the corrections have been made, they will have the opportunity to
post their stories to KidsPub. (If their parents sign a permission slip for them to do so)
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Students will either need access to a Cobb County laptop, or we will need to access a computer lab. For this to
work, the school must have already paid the access fee for KidPub.
Ideally, we would reserve a computer lab on two separate days. On day one we would browse KidPub, read
our stories, and turn in our vocab words. Then, before returning to the lab for a second day, the students will
work on their stories. Once the stories have been graded, we will return to the lab for day 2. On day 2 we will
publish our stories to KidPub. Only students who have returned the permission slip may publish their stories.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: The students have the opportunity to share their work with other students across the country,
and they have the opportunity to view other students’ works.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): The writings created by the students are an example of
an original product.
c. Higher-order thinking: Students are working to apply their understanding of vocab words they have
chosen into their new writings.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: The
publishing of the writings allows students to share their work with a much larger audience than just
their peers.
Reflective Practice: A potential drawback I see here is that, if some students are not allowed to share but
wanted to, they may feel left out or alienated. This could be somewhat alleviated by also having an in-class
publishing circle where everyone who wants to share is allowed to. This would depend on how much time
there is.
