TOPIC: TEACHING AS A PROFESSION AND A VOCATION
Answer the following:
1. Write the attitude you have that foster learning and genuine human relationships.
“Building relationships with students is by far the most important thing a teacher can
do. Without a solid foundation and relationships built on trust and respect, no quality learning
will happen. While I believe the importance of relationships cannot be over stated, many
teachers have no idea where to start. This is especially true when attempting to build
relationships with students who come from a different background than you do.”
Timothy Hilton in Education Week Teacher
We all know that building relationships with students seems like a daunting task.
Attitude is important to understand human behavior and it has been defined in a number
of ways (Gourneau, 2005). And it is also believed that teachers should be furnished with
general culture, domain, and knowledge. In addition to this, it is expected that they
should have positive attitudes towards the teaching profession for professional
satisfaction and success. (Camadan and Duysak, 2010).
Thus, I consider the following attitudes that I have as a positive attitude in
fostering learning and genuine human relationships. First, self-understanding or self-
confidence, at some point wherein someone is not patient with me that he/she no longer
wants to do a certain task, therefore I understand that in order my students to excel I do
need to be more patient with them. Then, collaborative attitude toward parents and
colleagues, during my teaching at JBLCF-Bacolod I had decided to try to reach out to
the parents of my student when their child is not doing well and make a necessary plan
for how I and her parents can help the child to excel.
2. What attitude do you need to improve?

Teachers have seldom been the object of studies in spite of wide recognition that
there is always a room for improvement. As a teacher, I sometimes experience stress
that I can’t even control which also carries with me all the way home. But rather than
dwelling on this, I find positive ways to eliminate my stress. Complaining about how bad
your day was won’t make the next day better. So, see what went wrong and try to turn it
around. Did it upset you when your students didn’t do the reading? Were you frustrated
with your students because they were extra noisy that day? Instead of focusing on what
went wrong, I prepare myself for the next day, emotionally, mentally and physically.
Being a teacher is not for the faint of heart. It requires patience, preparedness,
flexibility, an open mind and strength. It is a rewarding career, as it gives you the
opportunity to change many lives for the better.
3. Write what you do to manifest mastery of subject matter? What do you need to
improve?
As teachers, it's our job to make sure students understand and learn as we
progress through our lessons. Many things can inhibit a student's ability to learn,
including gaps in their knowledge. It's our responsibility as a teacher to continually
monitor our students and address these issues as they come up, adjust our instruction,
and give meaningful feedback to the students. And we do that through assessments.
The type of assessment we use will depend on what we hope to get out of it.
In order to manifest mastery of a subject matter specifically I usually use
achievement tests as an assessment to measure students' content knowledge.
Diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments are types of achievement tests.
Diagnostic and formative assessments are used to find gaps in students' learning to
help teachers improve instruction. While summative assessments are used to evaluate
student outcomes.

Therefore, I learn ways that teachers can use diagnostic and formative
assessments to support student achievement towards mastery of subject matter
content.
4. What are the effective teaching strategies that you use to facilitate student learning?
Teaching effectively involves not only the use of tools, techniques, and strategies
to optimize student learning but an understanding of context, in particular how your
students learn, how they process information, what motivates them to learn more, and
what impedes the learning process.
Teaching as a profession is formally the job of talented and trained people in the
field of education who are saddled with all pedagogical principles and practices and
mandate to ensure the all-round development of the learners at all levels of education.
Thus, the success of any education however, depends largely on the quality of teachers
and their teaching effectiveness.
The important issue in teaching is the identification of particular behavior that
helps effective teaching and learning to occur. These positive behaviors that aid
effective learning are referred to as teaching strategies. A teaching strategy is therefore
an educational technique, method or plan of classroom actions or interactions intended
to accomplish specific teaching/learning goals.
The following are the teaching strategies I used to facilitate student learning that I
can consider as effective ones. (1) Setting induction, as a pre-planned action I used to
arouse the interest of my students, in order also to create atmosphere of curiosity and
motivation as well, energize them and sustain their attention throughout our lesson. It
could be achieved through using short story, dramatization, creative questions and brain
storming. (2) Using examples, as we know that clear understanding is often difficult in
the absence of appropriate examples. It should, of course, be appropriate and relevant
to the subject matter, age, culture as well as the experiences of students. (3) Art of
questioning, as the ability to use provocative, answerable and appropriate questions as
it is considered to be a very important skill in teaching. (4) Cooperative learning, for

students learn effectively when they are working together. (5) Class discussion, of
course, as another way for students to teach each other. (6) Lastly as I remember,
providing feedback, for feedback process includes provision of knowledge of results,
questioning, visual aids, information assessment of performance as well. As feedback
helps us teacher to modify our lessons accordingly. Therefore, the goal of teaching is to
ensure learning, and if learning has not occurred, then we didn’t reach the goal.
5. What are some of your personal beliefs, insights, and habits that help you do your
work well?
Teaching is meant to be a very enjoyable and rewarding career field although
demanding and exhausting at times! You only become a teacher when you love children
and intend on caring for them with all your heart. That is why I try to make our lessons
to come alive by making it as an interactive and engaging as possible. I learned to
enjoy every teaching moment to the fullest. In life, things don’t always go according to
our plan. I learned to be flexible and go with the flow when change occurs. Instead of
stressing about change, I try to embraced it with both hands and show that I am
capable of hitting every curve ball that comes my way! Being an open-minded person
too. Nobody’s perfect and there is always a room for improvement. Sometimes, others
see what we fail to see. Therefore, be open-minded at all times.
Lastly, making difference, there goes a saying, “With great power, comes great
responsibility”. As a teacher, we need to be aware and remember the great
responsibility that comes with our profession. One of our goals is to make a difference
in the lives of our students. Let’s make them feel special, safe and secure when they
are in our classroom. Be the positive influence in their lives. Just in case they are not
getting enough support at home, at least we make a difference and provide that for
them.

TOPIC: CODE OF ETHICS FOR PROFESSIONAL TEACHERS OF THE
PHILIPPINES
Study the following situations. Choose the best option by putting a check on the space
provided for each choice. Explain your answer.
Situation no. 1
Being a person known for his integrity and credibility, Mr. Elbert R. Tolentino has been
serving as part of the Board of Election Canvassers for the past 10 years. However, in
the coming elections, his mother will be running as barangay captain. Because of this,
he is asked to campaign for her. Is it alright for him to campaign for his mother’s
candidacy? Explain your answer.
No, because being a government official, we’re not allowed to campaign for the
candidacy of any individual even a family because it’s against the law. And I believe
that if we truly value the profession that is given to us, we will find a way to maintain
and protect it. Considering the code of ethics in teaching is the least we can do in
taking care of our image and our profession.
Situation no. 2
Mr. Mario Ocampo, who has been teaching for the last 25 years, refused to attend an
important conference in Mindanao. Every time he is asked by the principal to attend
such an activity, he always requests a new teacher to attend. As a professional teacher,
is it right to express refusal in attending conferences.
No, as a professional teacher it is our duties and obligations to attend
conferences, trainings, seminars, etc. as what our higher authority is asking/requesting
us. As stated in the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers Article VII, section 3.
School officials shall encourage and attend the professional growth of all teachers under
them such as recommending them for promotion, giving them due recognition for

meritorious performance, and allowing them to participate in conferences in training
programs.
Situation no. 3
Ms. Rose Q. Reyes posted two-piece swimwear picture of herself in her Facebook page.
She received negative comments from the community and stakeholders. Ms. Reyes
justified that she has the right to post anything on her Facebook account since it was
her personal account. Is it right for Mrs. Reyes to do such?
Of course, not! As a professional we should act professionally by not posting any
just like Facebook language or a picture that is less than professional which may cause
the destroy of your image as a teacher.
On becoming a fully pledge teacher, one must know the do’s and don’ts of its
profession. Awareness is very important thing in teaching because the law excuses no
one. Professional should have the knowledge of performing their ethics based on how
they are mold as individuals.
Situation no. 4
During barangay fiesta, Mr. Ben Y. Maya was designated as the fiesta directorate
chairman. Because of his talent, he accepted the task willingly even without any
honorarium. He facilitated culture-based activities that made their barangay fiesta a
significant one. Is it alright for Mr. Maya not to receive any compensation for his
services rendered since this will be a precedent for the succeeding activity coordinator?
Yes, because we teachers are part of the community and we role to render
services anytime beyond our duty. Thus, it will result no harm, instead it will develop
our humanity and professionalism.

schools should not allowed to refused admitting such individuals.

students are excited to join the said parade but she did not join them due to personal
reason and only asked the president of the class to check the attendants of his
classmates. Is the decision of Mrs. Sedillo not answerable for any untoward incident to
happen to the students?
No. She is still answerable for any untoward incidents may happen to her class
unless emergency.

Bank with a monthly deduction of P3,500. In the same month she also borrowed money
to First Diamond Lending Company with a monthly deduction of P 3,500.00. In the first
2 months she enjoyed a take home pay of P7,500.00 because the 2 lending institutions
will deduct on the 3rd month from the date she borrowed. Is it alright for Mrs. Ramos
to borrow the amount considering that she don’t have enough take home pay when the
deduction will take effect?
No. We teachers should take our responsibility. It is considered as an unethical
thins for us to understand that we are professionals that should undergo the stage of
professionalism.
Situation no. 8
Mr. Ricky dela Cruz is one of the youngest teacher in Silab Community High School. Due
to his young age he has lots of friends and barkadas. After school hours, he is always
seen with his friends in an internet café playing Dota, in gambling dens, and in
beerhouses. He also frequently seen in discos during weekends. Is Mr. Cruz acting as a
good model to his students?
No. Because as a professional teacher you will serve as model to your students.
Therefore, ethics of teachers should not be memorized by teachers, but they have to
consider it in anything that they do, they have to perform it even if no one’s watching,
and they have to put it in their hearts and prove to the world that they can be the best
teacher that they can be.

Activity 1: Case Analysis
Case 1: Rhea is a young and personable teacher in a school in a coastal area. She
teaches Science to Grade 5 students who have difficulty reading the Science textbook in
English and comprehending the basic concepts. To solve this problem, Rhea decided to
hold her class by the shore one Saturday. Her class enjoyed the change and were very
participative since the class was conducted in the dialect.
What possible violations did Rhea commit?
I really appreciate teachers who are truly passionate about teaching. Teachers
who wants to be an inspiration to others. Just like Rhea as a young facilitator I truly
admire her passion in loving teaching. But I think she’s not aware of what she’s doing,
what I mean is that as a teacher we can’t do anything we want even if our purpose is
for your students’ needs to overcome their difficulty in learning. Possible violation Rhea
had committed was choosing their location for learning. This is only legal if there is a
permission from higher office and for the parents as well.
Case 2: After teaching at a private school for five years, Samuel gets accepted at a
national high school as a Chemistry teacher. Aside from teaching, he coached the
school team which won in the division science competition. During one of the pre-final
events, Samuel found out about the DOST scholarship for science teachers. He filled
out an application form but his principal refused to endorse this since Samuel has
rendered service to the school for just over a year, and there are other teachers more
qualified to apply. What should Samuel do?
I think there’s nothing with Samuel’s decision. Each of us teachers have our own
goal to be achieved if we really want it. He must push through his application for the
purpose of improving his professional growth and development. As teachers, we are
also changing and evolving not just for our students but also for our own self.

Case 3: As a teacher you submitted yourself in the evaluation and hiring process of
your Schools Division by following what was stipulated in DO 7, s. 2015. In the RQA,
you were ranked number 1. It so happened the appointing authority selected and
appointed the teacher next in rank to you. Did the appointing authority violate your
rights as a teacher? Does this affect your integrity and professional duties as a teacher?
Yes, if ranking is the basis then the appointing authority violated my rights as a
teacher for that is the only purpose why there is ranking. Ranking means applicants are
arranged from the ones most deserving up to the one who least reach the criteria that
must be followed strictly. And if not, this defeats the very purpose why there exist such
a thing called as RQA. My feelings is not so good but my professionalism is there.
Case 4: Salary scales of teachers shall provide for a gradual progression from a
minimum to a maximum salary by means of regular increments, granted automatically
after 3 years to the maximum steps, as provided by law. Provided, that the efficiency
rating of the teacher concerned is at least Satisfactory. How true is this? Does this
affect your integrity and professional duties as a teacher?
It is not true about efficiency rating of the teacher (satisfactory) that affects the
salary scale but instead satisfactory rating itself really affect one’s integrity and
professional duties as a teacher.
