TOPIC – HAIR CARE

INTRODUCTION –A person appearance and feeling of well being usually depends on the way the way
the hairs looks and feels. Normally the scalp is neither dry nor oily. Healthy hair of healthy scalp is
constantly falling and being replaced by new growth. The general health of a person effects the
growth of hair. However, physical changes, environmental and physical stress, aging infections and
certain diseases, or drugs can affect the characteristic of hair. The loss of hair (alopecia) can results
from improper practices of hair care.

DEFINITION- Cleaning of hair with shampoo or soap to remove dirt, oil and odour on scalp and hair,
for a helpless patient in bed to promote a healthy well being of the patient.

PURPOSES:-

1. To keep hair clean and healthy.

2. To promotes growth of hair.

3. To prevent loss of hair.

4. To prevent itching and infection.

5. To prevent accumulation of dirt, dandruff and oil.

6. To prevent tangles

7. To stimulates circulation.

8. To clean hair after pediculosis treatment.

9. To enhance personal appearance and well being.

10. To observe scalp.

11. To provide a sense of well being.

CONTRAINDICATION:-

 Head and neck injury.


 Spinal cord injuries.
 Surgeries on back and neck.
ARTICLES:-

PREPARATION OF THE PATIENT:-

 Explain the procedure to the patient.


 Collect and arrange articles conveniently.
 Provide privacy.
 Close the windows, put off fans to prevent from chills.
 Remove top linen after covering the patient with bath blanket.
 Keep the patient diagnolly and place on the pillow under the shoulder to tilt the head.
 Cover the pillow with the mackintosh and towel.
 Make an improvised trough with the mackintosh and newspaper and place it under the head
of the patient, to facilitate drainage of water into bucket.
 Plug ears with cotton balls and cover the eyes with a sponge cloth.
 Check the physician order to see the specific precautions.
 Assess the general condition of the patient.
