HRM515:PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: enumerate the importance of performance management and devising a performance


management system for organization.

CO2 :: understand contribution of performance management to measure level of strategy


implementation towards results.

CO3 :: apply performance appraisal techniques to enhance organizational effectiveness.

CO4 :: analyze effective performance management policies and practices to improve employee
and organizational performance

CO5 :: construct arguments for using appropriate performance management techniques, rewards
and sanctions to improve performance.
CO6 :: appraise the effectiveness of performance management systems and recommend
changes.

Unit I
Foundations of Performance Management : job analysis, performance management contribution,
disadvantages of poorly implemented PM Systems, concept, objectives and role of performance
management system, performance appraisal v/s performance management,, performance indices:
KPAs and KRAs for various job holders
Unit II
Essence of Performance Management : performance management process, strategic and
horizontal context, definition and purpose of strategic planning, administrative context, process of
linking performance management to the strategic plan
Unit III
Performance Planning and Evaluation : pre-requisites of performance planning, developmental
planning, goal setting theories including MBO and balanced scorecard, performance appraisal
techniques, rating errors, creating performance appraisal formats, team based discussion
Unit IV
Implementing Performance Management System : pilot testing, communication, training
programs for the acquisition of required skills, performance monitoring, feedback and counselling,
linkages of PMS with other HRM processes, performance audit, e-PMS
Unit V
Performance Management and Employee Development : personal developmental plans, 360
degree feedback system, direct supervisor role, risks of implementing 360 degree feedback system,
coaching and mentoring, coaching process and styles
Unit VI
Performance Management and Reward System : traditional and contingent pay plans, reasons
for introducing contingent pay plans, managing team performance, challenges of team performance
management, evaluating efficacy of PM system
