CHAPTER I

The Problem and Its Setting

Introduction

Caffeine is a natural stimulant most commonly found in tea, coffee, and cacao plants. It

works by stimulating the brain and central nervous system, helping you stay alert and prevent the

onset of tiredness. Students consume caffeine per day to help them in doing their activities,

assignments, school projects and when they are attending a zoom meeting. There are many

possible reasons why many students take caffeine to their everyday routine. There may be an

increase and huge consumption of caffeine that can lead to some negative effects to the human

body.

Caffeine’s ability to make people stay awake is one of the reasons why many students drink

caffeine as it blocks the effect of adenosine that makes your body become tired and boosts the

adrenaline to increase energy which has an effect in doing daily work. But on the other hand, too

much caffeine also triggers nervousness and anxiety. The high uses of 1000 mg or more per day

of caffeine in coffee have been reported that can cause nervousness and uneasiness of an

individual. Studies have shown that high intake of caffeine increases the time of staying awake

and makes it longer to fall asleep. Caffeine intake does so much and more than just giving us awake

in hours.

Caffeine is a type of stimulant that promotes alertness in our body and decreases the chance

of being tired. Caffeine begins to affect the individual's body very quickly. It reaches a maximum

level in blood within 30 to 60 minutes. It has a half-life of 3 to 5 hours. The half-life is the time it

takes for the body to eliminate half of the effect. The remaining caffeine can stay in the body for
a long time. This ingredient may cause some symptoms that have effects in the body. At a

minimum, you may feel more energetic, but over time, too much caffeine may cause withdrawal

symptoms. According to the Mayo Clinic, it’s safe for most healthy adults to consume up to 400

milligrams of caffeine per day. Knowing that a standard size cup of coffee is eight ounces. For

example, if you’re using a mug or getting your fix at a coffee house, chances are drinking 16

ounces or more, so reading labels is important.

Many students rely on caffeine to have energy to stay awake the whole day, in the morning

many students take coffee before going to school and one of their reasons is to stay awake during

the discussions and class hours.

Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, it is often viewed as a helpful stimulant,

thought to increase brain functioning. In a 2005 study by Florian Koppelstätter and colleagues at

the Medical University at Innsbruck, Austria, fMRI scans determined that caffeine promoted

increased activity of the anterior cingulate and the anterior cingulate gyrus in the prefrontal lobe

of the brain. According to Francine Juhasz (2020). These specific areas are involved in planning,

attention, monitoring and concentration, according to this study which was presented at the 2005

meeting of the Radiological Society of North America. Although caffeine has been shown to

stimulate concentration, there is inconclusive evidence of how long this effect lasts or precisely

how it varies in individuals.

The purpose of this study is to learn what is the effects of caffeine intake in the body mostly

of students who drink caffeine. The objectives of the study are to know the effects of caffeine in

the Concentration skills of the grade 11 students of Ina ng Buhay Catholic School.
Statement of the Problem

The goal of this study is to know the effects of taking caffeine to Concentration skills of grade

11 students in Ina ng Buhay Catholic School who often take Caffeine.

1. What are the effects of taking caffeine in the concentration skills of students at Ina ng

Buhay Catholic School?

2. How does the Concentration skills of students who are taking caffeine differ from those

who are not taking caffeine?

3. What type of caffeine are used and more effective for concentration skills of grade 11

students?

Conceptual Framework

Figure 1.1 Impacts of Caffeine Intake and its Correlation to Memory Recall, and

Concentration skills of Senior High School Students

In the first box, the researchers will ask the reason why they drink caffeine beverage. After

that, the researchers will conduct a survey to the students who drink a day as a main respondent.

Lastly, the researchers will analyze the results based on the survey and will expect to know the

Impacts of Caffeine Intake and its Correlation to Memory Recall and Concentration skills of the

students.
Scope and Limitation

The study will focus on the Caffeine Intake and its Correlation to Memory Recall and

Concentration skills of the Senior High School Students of Ina Ng Buhay Catholic School. The

researchers will conduct a survey with the Senior High School Students of Ina Ng Buhay Catholic

School who drink a beverage containing caffeine per day to gather credible information that will

help knowing the effects of Caffeine Intake to Memory Recall and Concentration skills of the

students. In addition, this study will be conducted in the school year 2020-2021.

Significance of the Study

This study concerns the development of the correlation of certain individuals with different

purposes. The researcher’s goal is to provide beneficial information to increase awareness that will

support students in intaking a caffeine and its importance on the concentration skills and memory

call of the students. Thus, this study shall profit students and even researchers involved in

educational discourses.

Students will be informed about their mental and physical health. It will also benefit from

the study as this may help some to improve their stress management and can build a healthy

environmental relationship.

Parents would be informed about how to help their children in overcoming their health

and habits and improving their skills. This would then serve as their basis for guidance and

understanding their children’s health situation.

Administrators which the outcome of this study would play a vital role for the school

official as it can serve as an aid the school is providing excellence in education. The administration

will also be aware of determining the mental state of the students, also, teachers and therefore will

be able to know what to do with their staff in case of having stress.

Future Researchers The future researchers may prosper or improve a related study by

providing them a reference for their future studies about the Caffeine Intake study, also, could also

find some points that are not addressed in this study and further improve them later on.

Definition of Terms

Adenosine – A nucleoside formed by the condensation of adenine and ribose. It is present in all

living cells in a combined form, as in ribonucleic acids.

Caffeine intake – Measured by consumption of coffee, cola, and tea. Caffeine is a drug naturally

produced in the leaves and seeds of many plants, stimulates the central nervous system, causing

increased alertness.

Memory recall – Mental process of retrieval of information from the past. Along with encoding

and storage, it is one of the three core processes of memory.

Complexity – A term describing coffees whose flavors layer pleasurably, giving the impression

of depth and resonance.

Stress Management – Mental tension caused by demanding, taxing or burdensome circumstances.

Stress doesn’t just affect our mental state and mood; it affects our physical health as well.
CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

Concentration Skills have always been a huge issue when it comes to the field of psychology. It

can easily be considered one of the most studied areas of psychology. Caffeine is considered to be

another huge area of research primarily because it is one of the most commonly consumed items.

Caffeine

Bailey and Heitkemper (2016), determined the amount of caffeine present in readily

available drinks varies widely, especially in energy drinks. Be mindful though that caffeine is also

present in tea, dark chocolate and even some powdered chocolate drinks. Drinks that contained a

caffeine maybe safe for adult but has a huge effect on children. The amount of Caffeine that can

be consumed by adults could be toxic to children. Like adults, children must not consume caffeine

in a daily basis.

Knight and Mather (2017) stated that the reason behind the people taking caffeine is many

of them often wonders if taking a caffeine improves their concentration skills. Many that consume

some beverages says they’re more active and alert after taking a caffeine. One caffeine taker

labeled himself as a “forgetful person” says that his memory improves after taking one cup.

Caffeine is a stimulant drug that affects the brain directly, and it has been shown without a doubt

to increase alertness. However, the effects of caffeine on memory are more mixed. Some research

says that caffeine can improve some types of memory specifically the global aspects of memory.

Some research says that the effects of caffeine in memory is state-independent. It means that the

memory only improves by caffeine when it's been taken at the same time of taking a caffeine and
gathering information. If no caffeine is consumed during the time of remembering some

information, people performs poorly than the other who taken a caffeine while studying some

information.

Anderson and Hidalgo (2018) proved that there has been some encouraging research

regarding the use of caffeine in older adults to counteract the natural declines in memory that are

associated with age. one study showed that caffeine reduced the afternoon decline in memory

experienced by "morning people"–older adults who generally perform better in the morning than

in the afternoon. However, some research says that taking a caffeine is not a reliable way of

memory recall in older people.in fact, in the test it shows that older people that consumed caffeine

performs poorly than those who do not.

Petros (2018) also determined, as caffeine is an addictive substance, trying to self-medicate

what you believe to be a poor memory may actually be making matters worse. For example,

caffeine tends to interfere with your sleep and is followed by a withdrawal period, both of which

can cause memory problems. as any college student will tell you, the worst time to take a class is

first thing in the morning.

Horne and Oseberg (2016) stated that many classes and entrance exams are only offered

during the time when most students are at their physiological low point of the day, as measured by

body temperature, skin conductance, and heart rate. Importantly, this circadian slump comes with

a cognitive cost. The majority of college students perform worse in the early morning compared

to the afternoon on a variety of cognitive tasks that measure attention, learning, memory, and

metamemory, skills that are critical for academic success.

Caffeine is the most consumed stimulant in the world that is consumed daily by 80% or

our world's population. Caffeine is a drug that blocks the adenosine receptors that are the cause of

exhaustion of a person. Caffeine boosts the adrenaline so that the person’s brain is more active

than being tired Hourihan and Benjamin (2017). Surprisingly few studies, however, have shown

that caffeine actually improves memory performance; and even fewer studies have considered how

caffeine interacts with time of day. In a previous study, we considered whether caffeine could

overcome the well-documented decrease in memory performance among older adults during the

late afternoon. We found that a single cup of coffee, ingested 30 min prior to memory testing,

completely reversed the memory decline experienced by older adults in the afternoon. We

suggested that caffeine might influence memory performance by boosting general levels of arousal

during non-optimal times of day.

A study from Capek and Guenther (2016) the effects of caffeine on other aspects of

memory have also been investigated. For example, components of Baddeley’s working memory

model have been examined and the results show no effects of caffeine on the articulatory loop or

the visuo-spatial sketchpad but improved central executive function as shown by improved speed

and accuracy of performing a logical reasoning Sturgess and Gallagher (2016). Semantic memory

has also been studied and results show that caffeine improves the speed of retrieval of semantic

information. Indeed, this effect appears to be very consistent with the majority of studies showing

improved performance after caffeine

Tunnicliffe and Shearer (2016) contend that using academic achievement as the key

outcome variable, 7377 Icelandic adolescents were surveyed for cigarette smoking, alcohol use,

daytime sleepiness, caffeine use, and potential confounders. Structural equation modeling (SEM)

was used to examine direct and indirect effects of measured and latent variables in two models:
the first with caffeine excluded and the second with caffeine included. A substantial proportion of

variance in academic achievement, which might otherwise have been attributed to the harmful

effects of cigarette smoking and alcohol use, was found to be attributable to caffeine. Evidence

was obtained that daytime sleepiness, which was found to be independently associated with usage

of licit substances (nicotine and alcohol) and caffeine, may be an important mediator of the

negative impact of those substances on academic achievement. Findings suggest the importance

of including measurements of caffeine consumption in future studies of adolescent substance use.

According to Fisone (2017), a review of the recent literature shows the role of caffeine in

the physiology, mood, and behavior of persons to be a complex one including changes in arousal,

anxiety, and performance. Questions are raised as to what degree the physiological effects of

caffeine are due to central nervous system stimulation and/or result from the release of

catecholamines. Anxiety resulting from both high levels of caffeine (caffeinism) and caffeine

withdrawal plus an association between caffeine and depression are discussed. Performance effects

are mixed, with both increases and decreases reported. Effects on mental tasks are related to

personality variables. The possible role of differences in initial sensitivity, adaptation to caffeine,

and/or interactions with nicotine and alcohol is discussed. The present paper reviews these studies,

discusses their implications for both clinical and experimental work, summarizes the major

unresolved issues, and makes suggestions for new and continuing areas of research.

Thong and Graham (2016) determined that all beverages were administered 30 min before

bedtime according to a balanced Latin‐square design. Regular coffee produced dose‐related

changes in most standard electroencephalogram‐electrooculogram (EEG‐EOG) sleep parameters,

and the 4‐cup equivalents of regular coffee and caffeine produced equivalent effects. Decaffeinated

coffee had no effect. Regular coffee and caffeine caused rapid eye movement (REM) sleep to shift
to the early part of the night and stages 3 and 4 sleep to shift to the later part. Coffee also produced

dose‐related changes in several subjective estimates of sleep characteristics. These results suggest

that coffee and caffeine may be used in normal subjects to induce symptoms mimicking those of

insomnia. Such a tool should promote further understanding of insomnia.

Synthesis

Caffeine is considered to be another huge area of research primarily because it is one of the most

commonly consumed items. The reason behind the people taking caffeine is many of them often

wonder if taking caffeine improves their memory recall. Many that consume caffeine say that

they’re more alert and active after taking one. They labeled themselves as “Forgetful person” but

when they take a cup of caffeine, they say that it helps them improve memory recall. Caffeine is a

stimulant that no doubt makes the drinker more alert and active. However, the effects of caffeine

on memory are more mixed. Some research says that caffeine can improve some types of memory,

specifically the global aspects of memory. Some research says that the effects of caffeine in

memory is state-independent. It means that the memory only improves by caffeine when it's been

taken at the same time of taking caffeine and gathering information.

The reason you get a quick wakeup call after chugging a mug of coffee has to do with the

way caffeine tricks your brain. In a Study, published in the Journal Consciousness and Cognition.

The researchers gave the 80 participants a 200mg caffeine pill that’s equal to 12oz of strong coffee.

And they asked 2 questions. The results of these research are that caffeine enhances the thinking

ability and concentration of participants to solve a problem with only one correct answer. But when

the participants answer the question that the answer is not only limited to one, the caffeine doesn’t

do anything to the ability of the person.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This study will showcase the processes, measures and techniques used in the study through

detailed description of the parts. More so, the section tackles about the research design of the study

that will be the guide in gathering the data needed to prove the hypothesis od the research.

Research Design

This study uses a Qualitative research design for the researcher to know what are the effects

of taking caffeine to the concentration skills of Senior high school students of Ina ng Buhay

Catholic School.

Descriptive research is a type of a research design which aims to know the people’s

experiences and perspective to achieve a deep understanding of the topic. It is a research to know

what are the effects and how the person reacts to a certain situation. Thus, the goal of the

researchers is to understand the effects of caffeine intake to the concentration skills.

Population of the Study

In this study, the researchers will get 20 respondents, ten grade 11 students and ten grade

12 students of Ina ng Buhay Catholic School. According to the article published by California

State Science Fair, the age group of teens ranging from 14-25 years old showed to have the best

concentration skills. In addition, the tasks given and need to be accomplished by senior high school

learners greatly require the use of concentration skills.

Sampling Technique

The study, “Caffeine Intake and Its Effects to Concentration Skill of the Senior High

School Students of Ina ng Buhay Catholic School”. The sampling technique to be used in this

study was non-probability sampling, mainly total population sampling since the whole population

of the Senior High School Students participated in the said study. Total population sampling is

also considered as purposive sampling which entails the researcher to test the entire population

that has similar set of characteristics.

The researchers chose purposive total population sampling that uses respondents based on

their characteristics and the objective of the study. Purposive sampling is to produce a sample that

can be logically assumed to be representative of the population. It is a non-probability sampling

method in which researchers pick their corresponding element or portion of the population based

on their judgment.

Data Gathering

The researcher conducted a one-on-one interview suitable for the objectives of the study.

The researcher asked permission to the good office for the confidential data of the Senior High

School Students of Ina ng Buhay Catholic School that was needed for this research study entitled

“Caffeine Intake and Its Effects to Memory Recall and Concentration Skill of the Senior High

School Students of Ina ng Buhay Catholic School”. The questions will be specified using a Zoom

meeting so that respondents can easily access them.

The researchers chose this method of data gathering because face-to-face data collection is nearly

impossible during a pandemic. The researchers will disseminate the link of the zoom meeting link

through Messenger app to the learners of Senior High School Students. Also, the link is handed
immediately to the respondents enough to keep the data private. As soon as the respondents

completed the interview, the researcher will then analyze the data obtain results. After that is the

preparation and construction of conclusions and recommendations for the betterment of the

research study.

Research Instrument

The researchers conducted their interview with a set of question aligned in research

questions about the experiences of Senior Highschool Students to determine the factors, effects

and relation of taking caffeine daily to Memory recall and Concentration skills of the respondents.

The researchers will use one-on-one interview the given to complete a successful thesis analysis.

Validation of Instrument

The researchers created and developed their one-one-one interview, which composed of

set of questions about the respondent’s experiences to evaluate the factors and effects of Caffeine

Intake and Its Effects to Memory Recall and Concentration Skill of the Senior High School

Students during 2020-2021. The researchers will conduct a feedback from certain evaluators to

validate the research instrument. The evaluators would undoubtedly examine and make

suggestions for changes to the researchers' study interview.

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the results of the data gathered from the collective respondents, as

well as the analysis of findings. This shows the interpretation of information needed in identifying

the effects of taking caffeine to the concentration skills of SHS students of Ina ng Buhay Catholic

School.

Analysis and Interpretation of Data

The researchers had given out an interview with four questions regarding their topic. The

respondents were selected in the Senior High School department, with twenty persons selected

through purposive sampling from the different sections of Grade 11 and 12. The most common

responses are shown below, along with their corresponding interpretation and analysis. Answers

that don’t fit with the major ones will be evaluated as ‘Other Answers’. The gathered data are as

follows:

What type of caffeine you take and more effective for your concentration skills?

The students almost have the same answer for the question. Most of them drink coffee

because they like the coffee more than other drinks. some of them preferred iced coffee and some

of them like hot coffee. some, however, like energy drinks. These respondents go for energy drinks

because they like the taste of it.

Does Caffeine improve your concentration while doing School activities? Why or Why not?

Majority of the students answered “Yes”. According to them caffeine is a great source for

improving an individual’s mental functioning, nourishing short term memories, and helping them

to be more focused on doing activities. However, two students answered “No” because most of

the time, it makes them sleepy especially when it is time to study or do school work.

Do you think taking Caffeine before doing activities helps you? Why or Why not?

Answers
Yes 16

No 0

It depends 4

Figure 2.3 Students’ response if it helps them when taking caffeine before doing activities

Almost all of the respondents answered that it helps them to do activities when taking

caffeine because it gives them a boost and allows them to stay up all night doing their activities. It

also gives them self-awareness especially when they are having a ton of school activities to work.

On the other hand, four respondents answered “No”, because according to them, it may damage

their sleeping pattern especially when taking caffeine at night. Sometimes it also becomes their

distraction in doing activities because they palpitate severely.

What are the effects of taking caffeine in your concentration skills?

Answers

It helps me to be productive/concentrate 18

It makes me stay awake 1

It makes me sleepy 1

Figure 2.4 Effects of taking caffeine in students’ concentration skills

Almost all respondents answered that the effects of taking caffeine in their concentration

skills is they help them be more productive, active, alert, awake and focused because of the boost

of adrenaline they got from drinking coffee. they tend to focus more on doing their things and not

get easily distracted by others. one respondent answered that drinking caffeine has no effect on her

and it makes her sleepier than staying awake.

After analyzing the data, the researchers can definitely say that taking caffeine has a huge

impact especially for Senior High School Students. It may vary in terms of the difference of the

students’ experiences; they still gave the ideal feedback.

● Based on the Related Literature and some various respondents, many that consume some

beverages say they’re more active and alert after taking caffeine. However, the effects of

caffeine on memory are more mixed. Some research says that caffeine can improve some

types of memory, specifically the global aspects of memory.

● According to the respondents, caffeine itself may not make students smarter, but it does

increase the brain’s ability to concentrate. It can be to boost alertness. Many of them find

themselves dragging after a late night of studying and socializing with friends or a long

day at the social media or technology platforms.

● In contrast to the researchers’ expected results, the researchers can also relate to some

circumstances that the students’ response, because they also find taking caffeine more

productive and focused at the same time.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter tackles the summary of the whole study, the finding further elaborated based

on the results of the interview, the conclusions drawn inclined with the research problem and

hypothesis, and the recommendations made as an outcome of the research.

Summary

Caffeine is a type of Stimulant that promotes alertness in our body and decreasing the

chance of being tired. Caffeine begins to affect the individual's body very quickly. It reaches a

maximum level in your blood within 30 to 60 minutes. It has a half-life of 3 to 5 hours. The half-

life is the time it takes for your body to eliminate half of the effect. The remaining caffeine can

stay in your body for a long time. This ingredient almost always causes some symptoms. At a

minimum, you may feel more energetic, but over time, too much caffeine may cause withdrawal

symptoms.

According to the Mayo Clinic, it’s safe for most healthy adults to consume up to 400

milligrams of caffeine per day. Knowing that a standard size cup of coffee is eight ounces. If you’re

using a mug or getting your fix at a coffee house, chances are you’re drinking 16 ounces or more,

so reading labels is important.

On the other hand, an increase of taking caffeine also triggers nervousness and anxiety.

High uses of 1000 mg or more per day have reported to cause nervousness and uneasiness of an

individual. Studies shown that high intake of Caffeine increases the time of staying awake and
makes it longer to fall asleep. Caffeine intake does so much and more than just giving us awake in

hours.

Conclusion

The conclusions will be drawn based from the research questions that the research intends

to answer. The following is the list of the research questions with the answers based from the

outcome of the previous chapter.

1. What are the effects of taking caffeine in the concentration skills of students at Ina ng

Buhay Catholic School?

Caffeine makes students to be more productive and energetic. They feel like they become

more goal driven all throughout the day. Caffeine helps them focus and concentrate in their

studies, especially when reading. However, some students don’t feel the same way, based

on their experience, it does not affect them in any way. It doesn’t wake them up instead it

makes them sleepy.

2. How does the concentration skills of the students who are taking caffeine differ from those

who are not taking caffeine?

Caffeine is considered as a stimulant. It stimulates the body’s central nervous system, and

boosts the brain’s production of a neurochemical known as dopamine, which controls the

ability to focus and maintain concentration. On the other hand, students who don’t take

caffeine may feel the other way around. Caffeine’s jittery effects on the body mimic those

of a frightening event. That’s because caffeine stimulates the body’s “fight or flight” panic

response, and studies show that this can actually make anxiety worse.
3. What type of caffeine are used and more effective for concentration skills of grade 11

students?

Students use Black and Iced coffee, it helps them feel energized and improve physical

performance, energy levels and make them productive in a period of time. Iced coffee may

lift their mood although it is similar to a regular coffee, but since it is iced, it may be easier

on your stomach.

Recommendations

The researcher proposes the following recommendations for the related research and

instrumentation in the field of education and development of each character for the improvement

of the study.

Students must be aware informed about the mental and physical health. It will also benefit

from the study as this may help some to improve their stress management and can build a healthy

environmental relationship.

Parents must be informed about how to help their children in overcoming their health and

habits and improving their skills. This would then serve as their basis for guidance and

understanding their children’s health situation.

Future Researchers must proper a related study by providing a reference for their future

studies about caffeine intake study, also, could find some points that are not addressed in the study

and further improve them.
