1 – INTRODUCTION
SMS would like to thank you for choosing RED-R DC, the Automatic Rescue Device which allows the lift car
return to the nearest floor in case of main power failure, for rope lift systems with DC motors.
The cycle ends with the car door opening, in order to allow the passenger exit.

2 – GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The device is fit in a metal cabinet and it’s made up of the following components:
- Main Switches (IE – IE2)
- Battery Chargers (CBAT1 – CBAT2 – CBAT3)
- Auxiliary Inverter and Operation Board (MIAE)
- Door Motor and Safety Chain Control Boards (OPEA – OPEC)
- Transformers (T1 – T2)
- Field, motor and brake contactors (KE1 – KE2 – KM – KCC – KBT – KBK)
- Connection Terminals

- There are 16 terminals (1 – 1Q – 2 – 2Q – 3 – 3Q – 4 – 4Q – 5 – 5Q – 6 – 6Q – 7 – 7Q – 8 – 8Q) on the

OPEC board for the safety chain switch from the control panel to RED-R DC:
connect the different “sections” of the safety chain as shown in the WIRING DIAGRAM - Par. 8.
Connect the control panel earth terminal to QM- of the OPEC Board.
During the RED-R DC operation cycle, the safety circuit is supplied with 110 Vac 50 Hz voltage,
especially the sections between terminals 1, 2, 3 4, 5, 6 and 7, 8. Special care must be paid with any
device connected to these sections in order to avoid damage from the 110 Vac 50 Hz voltage.
- There are 4 terminals (Z1Q – Z1 – Z2 – Z2Q on the terminal M5 of the OPEA board) for the connections
to the stop switch, with 2 choices:
1) In case you are using an additional stop switch for the emergency (for example 1 speed lift or with 2
switches, or if you don’t want to interfere with the operation), connect it to terminals Z1 - Z2.
2) In case you are using the existing stop switch, cut off the connection between control panel and stop
switch, connecting the switch to terminals Z1-Z2 and the control panel to terminals Z1Q – Z2Q.

RED-R is set in a way that the emergency is activated automatically at mains power failure, even one
single phase (Dip Switch SW1: – 8 OFF, – 7 ON.
RED-R DC SV.REDR.985.10001 & 10002 INSTRUCTION MANUAL Release 0 date 25-03-10 4
If you wish to have the emergency operates also when the only operation voltage is missing, connect this
voltage to terminals M+–M- (terminal M11 – MIAE board) and switch the Dip Switch SW1 – 7 to OFF.
The voltage can be rectified or alternate (for rectified voltage respect the polarity).
See Par. 7.2. – MIAE BOARD to check the allowed voltages.

4 – OPERATION
RED-R activates when a mains power failure occurs (even if a single phase fails) or when a lack of voltage to
terminals M+_ M- occurs (if you have chosen this type of operation).
After 4 seconds the emergency cycle starts. The operation can end in one of the following ways:
- If the car is at floor with the doors closed, it ends when doors are completely open.
- If the car is not aligned with a floor, it ends when the car reaches the first floor in the most favourable run
direction and doors are open.
- If the lift doesn’t start for any reasons (safety chain not closed, contactor that does not energize, brake
that does not open), it ends when the time allowed for the operation is elapsed.
- It ends when batteries are discharged (the supply voltage level for the MIAE Board is lower than 40V).
Once the emergency cycle has started, it’s brought to end even if the main supply is back in the meantime.
The starting of the emergency cycle is shown by the led DLB and by the starting of the auxiliary inverter
(ONIAUX) that through the elevator transformer T1 and T2, generates the different voltages which are
necessary to the lift; such as brake voltage, door motor voltage, operation voltage and car light voltage.
The emergency cycle goes on in a different way according to car position:
1) CAR AT FLOOR
If doors are open the emergency turns on (contactors KE1 and KE2 activate) and, after the door opening
time has elapsed, it turns off.
If doors are closed the emergency turns on, the doors open and, after the door opening time has elapsed,
the emergency turns off.
2) CAR NOT AT FLOOR
If the car is not aligned with a floor, the emergency turns on (contactors KE1 and KE2 activate); if the
doors are open, they close, contactor KM energizes, then the MIAE Board gives the ON command to the
PWB Board, which controls the motor, field and brake contactors.
First, the PWB Board check if there is the motor field current, then the brake opens and the motor
armature is kept with brushes in short-circuit. If the motor rotates pulled by the load, the operation goes
on this way; if the motor doesn’t rotate, instead, the short-circuit on the brushes is removed and the motor
armature is supplied by the battery voltage (12V).
Between one operation and the other the brake always closes, to avoid uncontrolled movements.
When the car reaches the floor, the doors open and, after the door opening time has elapsed, the
emergency turns off.

5 – FINAL CHECK AND TEST

Once that all the connection has been done as shown in the diagram, with the Main Power Switch open and
with the Line 1~230V 50Hz switch closed, check the followings:
- With IE – IE2 switches closed, test the battery charge status: disconnect temporarily the pluggable block
on terminal M1 of the CBAT Boards and check the voltage to the +/- terminals of each one of the 10
batteries (it must be > 12V and < 13,5V).
- Test the CBAT battery chargers: with M1 disconnected as in the previous condition, the output voltage on
each section (+ / -) of the first CBAT (CB1) must be 13,5V, the output voltage on each section (+ / -) of
the second and third CBAT (CB2-CB3) must be 27V; moreover, the green leds DL1 and DL4 must be lit.
Switch on the Main Power Switch and check that the lift system is working properly.
Check in particular the operation when the contacts of the safety chain open.
Check that on the MIAE board the following Leds are on:
- RS-ST 3-phase supply DLD flashing - microcontroller active
- 4P 4° pole closed DLA board ready for emergency operation
Then check :
- The stop switch setting (See Par.7.2 – MIAE BOARD for the correct setting of the contact if N.O. or N.C.).
- The brake supply: check that the BRAKE conductor is connected to the transformer T2, to a plug
compatible with the brake electromagnet voltage supply.
- Door motor supply: Check that the conductors DOOR1 and DOOR2 are connected to transformer T1 and
T2, to plugs compatible with the requested voltage.

You can now test the emergency operation following the instruction hereunder:

RED-R DC SV.REDR.985.10001 & 10002 INSTRUCTION MANUAL Release 0 date 25-03-10 5

- Switch off the Line 1~230V 50Hz, by opening the relative Switch.
- Switch off the main power, opening the Main Power Switch, with car aligned with none floor.
- Make a bridge between terminals S1-S2 (terminal board M9 – MIAE board), because if the 4th pole is
open, the lift cannot perform the emergency operation.
After a few seconds, the emergency operation starts and the device perform the following operations in
sequence:
a) It turns off the led DLA (RED-R DC ready for emergency operation).
b) It turns on the led DLB (RED-R DC in emergency).
c) It activates the KE1 output and the KE1 and KE2 contactors (so that motor armature, motor field, brake,
safety chain, door motor, stop switch and the car light pass under control of RED-R DC).
The DL1 and DL12 leds on the PWB board lights on.
d) It activates ONIAUX, and turns on the auxiliary 3-phase inverter, that through the elevator transformers
T1 and T2, generates the different voltages which are necessary to the lift; such as brake voltage, door
motor voltage, operation voltage and car light voltage.
e) It makes the KM contactor energize (CPR led), then waits for the actual KM energization testing the IKE1
input for maximum 20 seconds, activating contemporary CH to control an eventual door closing.
f) With the contactor KM energized, it stops the door closing (CH off) and activates the output KE2, which
activates the run input (UP) in the PWB board, shown by the DL13 and DL14 leds on the board itself.
g) The motor armature and brake control is managed by the PWB board in this way:
1) if there is the motor field current, it makes the contactor KCC to energize, in order to keep the motor
brushes in short-circuit.
after 1 second, it makes the contactor KBK to energize, so that the brake opens.
after the time set with the “V” trimmer, it checks the motor armature current:
• if the current value is between 5A and the value set with the “I” trimmer, it means that the motor
rotates pulled by the load and goes on: by means of the “I” trimmer, you choose the maximum
current which can flow in the armature, that is the maximum lift system speed with the brushes in
short-circuit.
• if the armature current is lower than 5A, all the PWB board outputs switch off, then, after the time
set with the “R” trimmer, the operation is switched to the one with motor armature supplied by the
battery, that is:
2) it makes the KBT contactor to energize
- when the armature current becomes higher than 10A, it activates the KBK contactor, which
controls the brake opening and consequently the motor rotation.
- if during the run the armature current value drops below the value set with the “F” trimmer, it
means that the motor can reach a dangerous speed, so all the PWB board outputs switch off
and a new starting is commanded: this can be following the 1) or 2) sequence, depending on the
jumper JP6 position.
h) Once the car has reached the floor level, it waits for the stop delay, that is set by trimmer P2 on MIAE
Board (from 0 to 5 sec).
i) When the stop delay is elapsed, it will deactivates first the output KE2 to switch off the PWB board and
then CPR to control the KM contactor de-energization.
j) It activates AP to control door opening and it waits for the door opening time set with trimmer P1 on MIAE
Board (from 0,1 to 31 sec.).
k) When door opening time is elapsed, it turns the auxiliary inverter off and deactivates ONIAUX and AP.
l) It deactivates KE1, to bring back under the control panel control the motor field and armature, the brake,
the safety chain, the door motor, the stop switch and the car light. In this way the whole lift is brought
back to normal operation from the mains.
m) It switch off the led DLB and switch on the led DLC (emergency cycle completed).

6 – INSULATION TEST INSTRUCTIONS

1. Place the switches IE and IE2 of RED-R DC in OFF position.

9 – TROUBLE SHOOTING
1) The car doors work properly when supplied by mains power, while they work in the opposite way when
supplied by RED-R:
exchange 2 phases of the door motor emergency supply, exchanging for example the wires connected to
terminals MPR and MPS on the OPEA board.
2) When emergency operation starts, the over current protection of the auxiliary inverter on MIAE board
trips (Leds DLA e DLB light on at the same time):
check the connections between RED-R and control panel and try to insulate circuits one at a time: for
example cut off all the connection directly made on MIAE and OPEA boards and restore them one at a
time, when you find out the connection which makes the auxiliary inverter to trip, check carefully the
corresponding circuit.
3) The emergency run is carried on with “jogging” operation:
If the current absorbed from the motor shows that the motor is pulled by the load and it can reach a
dangerous speed (if the current is too high during the operation with motor brushes in short-circuit, or it is
too low during the operation with battery voltage applied to the motor), the “jogging” operation is
activated, the brake opens and closes intermittently until the car reaches the floor with “jogging”
operation.
This is not a wrong operation, on the contrary it is done for safety reason, in order to avoid that in
gearless lift systems the car can take dangerous speed without any control, especially in the
worst case of load (full car going down or empty car going up).
4) When the car reaches the floor, it doesn’t stop at the correct level:
- if the car oversteps the floor level, decrease the stop delay, turning anticlockwise the trimmer P2 (MIAE).
- if the car stops before reaching the floor level, increase the stop delay, turning clockwise the trimmer P2.
