and 20 minutes.
(i) Express the speed in m/s,
(ii) Find the distance travelled.
(b) (i) The second leg of journey was on a dirt road of length 60 km travelled at 40
km/h. find the time taken for this part of journey. Give your answer in hours
and minutes.
(ii) Find the average speed for the whole journey.
(c) The petrol consumption on the paved road was 9 km/l, while on the dirt road it was

3
petrol required to complete the journey.
(d) Given that the cost of 1 litre of petrol in 2009 was $3.60. Find the total amount
required to complete that journey.
(e) The total cost of petrol consists of three components, 45% federal taxes, 15%local
taxes and the remaining are other costs. Express these costs in ratio as a : b : c.
(f) In 2009, the price of petrol was 20% less than the price of 2008. find the price of
petrol in 2008.
2 The students of grade 8 of a certain school were given an open ended (as many questions as
possible can be done) IQ test of 50 minutes duration.
(a) The greatest number of questions attempted by a student was x. Express in terms of
x, time taken for each question.
(b) Another student attempted 2 less questions in the same allotted time, find his time
for each question.
(c) Given that the difference between their times is 1 second for attempting each
question, set up an equation in terms of x and hence show that it reduces to
x 2 − 2 x − 6000=0
(d) Solve the equation for x, giving your answer correct to 2 decimal places.
(e) Write the range of the greatest number of questions attempted.

Diagram 2
(a) Shown in diagram 1, is a cone, full of water to its brim, with radius of 8 cm and height of
25 cm.
(i) Find the volume of water,
The cone has the opening at the bottom through which water can drip. Now the cone is
placed in an open cylinder, as shown in diagram 2, and the water is allowed to drip out of
it. The water stops dripping out when it reaches a height where it touches the lower end of
the cone. At this moment the height of the water in the cone drops to 12.5 cm.
(b) (i) Find the radius of the water surface in the cone at this instant.
(ii) Hence, find the slant height of the water level in the cone,
(iii) Find the surface of the cone which is in contact with water.
(iv) How much water is poured out to cylinder?
(v) Hence find the height of water level in the cylinder.
(d) The water drips out at a rate of 8cm 3 / s , how long will it take to empty the cone?
