Density Pratice Problems
Stage 9
Instructions: Read and solve each problem. Please show your complete work. Use correct units at all times, no
value must be left without units. Each problem is worth 7 points (data, formula, isolated formula, substituted
formula, numerical answer, word-form answer, correct units).
1. You have a rock with a volume of 15cm3 and a mass of 45 g. What is its density?
2. You have a different rock with a volume of 30cm3 and a mass of 60g. What is its density?
3. A block of aluminum occupies a volume of 15.0 mL and weighs 40.5 g. What is its density?
4. Mercury metal is poured into a graduated cylinder that holds exactly 22.5 mL. The mercury used to fill the
cylinder weighs 306.0 g. From this information, calculate the density of mercury.
5. What is the weight of the ethyl alcohol that exactly fills a 200.0 mL container? The density of ethyl alcohol
is 0.789 g/mL.
6. A rectangular block of copper metal weighs 1896 g. The dimensions of the block are 8.4 cm by 5.5 cm by
4.6 cm. From this data, what is the density of copper?
7. A flask that weighs 345.8 g is filled with 225 mL of carbon tetrachloride. The weight of the flask and
carbon tetrachloride is found to be 703.55 g. From this information, calculate the density of carbon
tetrachloride.
8. Calculate the density of sulfuric acid if 35.4 mL of the acid weighs 65.14 g.
9. Find the mass of 250.0 mL of benzene. The density of benzene is 0.8765 g/mL.
10. A block of lead has dimensions of 4.50 cm by 5.20 cm by 6.00 cm. The block weighs 1587 g. From this
information, calculate the density of lead.
11. 28.5 g of iron shot is added to a graduated cylinder containing 45.50 mL of water. The water level rises to
the 49.10 mL mark, From this information, calculate the density of iron.
12. What volume of silver metal will weigh exactly 2500.0 g. The density of silver is 10.5 g/cm3.
13. A cylindrical tube has a length of 14.4cm and a radius of 1.5cm and is filled with a colorless gas. If the
density of the gas is known to be 0.00123g/cm3, what is the mass of the gas in the tube in mg?
14. You decide you want to carry a boulder home from the beach. It is 30 centimeters on each side, and so has
a volume of 27,000 cm3. It is made of granite, which has a typical density of 2.8 g/cm3. How much will this
boulder weigh?
15. Rocks are sometimes used along coasts to prevent erosion. If a rock needs to weigh 2,000 kilograms (about
2 tons) in order not to be shifted by waves, how big (what volume) does it need to be? You are using basalt,
which has a typical density of 3200 kg/m3
16. A golden-colored cube is handed to you. The person wants you to buy it for $100, saying that is a gold
nugget. You pull out your old geology text and look up gold in the mineral table, and read that its density is
19.3 g/cm3. You measure the cube and find that it is 2 cm on each side, and weighs 40 g. What is its
density? Is it gold? Should you buy it?
