11.a. A beam 8m long is simply supported at the ends and carries a uniformly distributed load of
1500 N/m and three concentrated load of 1000 N, 2000 N and 4000 N acting respectively at the left
quarter point, center point and right quarter point . Draw SFD and BMD.
(or)
11.b. A cantilever of 3m long carries a UDL of 12 kN/m is spread over a length of 1.5m from the free
end. It also carries a point load of 15 kN at free end and another point load of 8 kN at 1 m from the
fixed end. Draw the SFD and BMD.
12.(a) The internal and external diameter of a hollow shaft is in the ratio of 2:3. The hollow shaft is

shear stress and twist conditions. Take G= 0.85 x 105MPa.
Or
(b)A hollow shaft of external diameter 120 mm transmits 300 kW power at 200 rpm. Determine the
maximum internal diameter if the maximum stress in the shaft is not exceed 60 N/mm2.
13. (a)A closely coiled helical spring of mean diameter 20 cm is made of 3 cm diameter rod and has
16 turns. A weight of 3 kN is dropped on this spring. Find the height by which should be dropped

(Or)
(b)The stiffness of a close coiled helical spring is 1.5 N/mm of compression under a maximum load
of 60N. The maximum shearing stress produced in the wire of the spring is 125 N/mm 2. The solid
length of the spring(when the coils are touching) is given as 5 cm. Find (i) diameter of wire (ii) mean
diameter of the coils and (iii) number of coils required. Take modulus of rigidity = 4.5 x 10 4
N/mm2.
14.(a)Calculate change in diameter, change in length and change in volume of a thin cylindrical sheet
100 cm diameter, 1 cm thick, 5m long, when subjected to internal pressure 3 N/mm2. Take the value

(b)Calculate the thickness of metal necessary shell of internal diameter 160 mm to withstand in
internal pressure of 25 MN/m2, if maximum permissible shear is 125 MN/m2.
15.(a) Calculate: (i) the change in diameter, (ii) change in length and (iii) change in volume of a thin
cylindrical shell 100 cm diameter, 1 cm thick and 5 m long when subjected to internal pressure of 3
N/mm2. Take the value of E= 2 x 105 N/mm2 and poisson’s ratio,µ= 0.3
(or)
(b) A thin cylindrical tube 80 mm internal diameter and 5 mm thick is closed at its ends. It subjected
to an internal pressure of 6 N/mm2 and torque of 2009600 kN.m. Find the hoop stress, longitudinal

16.a. A horizontal beam AD, 10m long carries a UDL of 12 kN/m length run together with a
concentrated load 30 kN at the left end A. The beam is supported at a point B which is 2.5m from A
and C which is in the right hand half of the beam and 3m from D. Plot the SDF and BMD.
(or)
b. A T-section of a simply supported beam has the width of flange = 100 mm, overall depth = 100 mm,
thickness of flange and stem = 20 mm,. Determine the maximum stress in beam when a bending
moment of 12 kN-m is acting on the section. Also calculate the shear at neutral axis and the junction of
web and flange when force of 50 kN acting on beam.
