Technical Report - Automated Guided Vehicle

An automated guided vehicle (AGV) is a robot that transports materials through a predetermined path using sensors and guidance systems. AGVs are mostly used in manufacturing to efficiently move raw materials and products between warehouses and production lines. Some benefits of AGVs include reduced labor costs, increased efficiency, and the ability to easily change routes. AGVs use various navigation methods like magnetic tape, lasers, or cameras to follow their path and stop when obstacles are detected.

Automated Guided Vehicle

An automated guided vehicle (AGV for short) is a robot which transports

materials through a pre-determined path using inductive wirings, optical tapes,
sensors, or cameras. AGV have a control system that gives information to the
vehicle on what routes it will need to take to transport materials. The vehicle can
carry up to around 600 lbs. (1180 kg) of weight of load.

AGV are mostly being used in manufacturing facilities where raw materials
and partially completed products are transported from warehouse to production
lines for processing. Using AGV provides efficient flow of materials. This will
provide production lines needed materials for continuous process.

Advantages of using AGV

Although an AGV is a simple transport vehicle which carries materials from

one place to another, having this robot will provide several benefits which are
listed below.

• Workers transporting materials can be replaced by AGV which reduce labor

costs.
• Increases efficiency and productivity by taking the most safe and fast routes
when transporting materials back and forth.
• Programmed to follow pre-determined path and stop when there is obstacle
present.
• Products on AGV are tracked to prevent from being lost or misplaced.
• Guided paths can easily be changed which is good when planning for
renovations.
• Requires less space than forklift which is a very common transport vehicle.

How AGV works

AGVs receives information from the control system using a software to
move automatically and uses sensors to move in a guided path or stop when there
is obstruction present in its path.

List of navigation guides that AGV can be used:

Magnetic guide tape Magnetic sensors are used to follow the path using
magnetic tape.

Wired navigation Antennas in the AGV detect signals from wires

which is embedded on floors.

Laser target navigation AGV have laser transmitter and receiver. Reflective
tapes are placed on walls and other objects to reflect
back the laser from the AGV which is used to
calculate distances.

Inertial navigation Transponders embedded in floors are used to verify

AGV’s current location.

Vision guidance AGV rely on a camera recorded features along the

routes to navigate.

Geo guidance Use sensors to recognize objects and obstacles in the

environment.
LiDAR (light detection Transmit laser pulses in 360° to calculate the distance
and ranging) between AGV and the objects or obstacles.

AGV can use one or more of these navigation guides to have a safe and
precise movement of the vehicle.

Below are the lists of how AGV are powered:

Common Batteries These includes flooded lead acid, sealed

batteries, Nickel-Cadmium batteries, and
Lithium-ion batteries

Inductive Power Plates are embedded on floors which

provides power to the AGV.

Fuel Cells Can be used as an alternative to batteries.
