Theory Construction As 1

Counselors develop theoretical frameworks to guide their work. Theories help counselors understand clients and determine prognoses, the potential impact of interventions, and how life experiences shape clients. However, theories also have limitations because science can never prove anything with complete certainty. When applying theories from their own cultural backgrounds to clients from other cultures, counselors must consider ethical implications and choose interventions respectful of client dignity and well-being.

Theory Construction as a “blueprint for action” as well as a “basis for prediction”

for counselors.

Counselor's decisions flow from a theoretical model of what people are like, what

defines mental health and what conditions are likely to be most conducive and facilitating

change. Theoretical framework describes and introduces the theory, which explains why the

research question/problem under study exists. Counselors go by multifaceted and well-developed

approaches of how the world work (metaphysics), how people should act (ethics), cause-effect

relationships (logic), meaning of human existence (ontology), how people know (epistemology).

These theories guide what a counselor does with a client at a precise moment. According to

Kottler and Shephard (2015) Theory construction aids counselors in calculating client prognosis,

likely consequences of intervention, how experiences and nonexperiences affect a client’s life,

and how therapy could affect the client. Neukrug (2015) states that theories are interpretations of

human nature and to study the approach of integrative counselors’ development through their

career. Each client has different needs, and counselors will apply different theories that best

benefit the client’s particular needs. According to Kottler and Shepherd (2015) theory

construction is a blueprint for action, and during the construction counselor can predict (1)

prognosis (2) intervention consequences (3) connections and (4) impact of efforts (Kottler &

Shephard, 2018).

Challenges/ Limitations when constructing a Theory of Counseling.

When constructing a theory of counseling, there will be numerous challenges and limitations that

might arise, because science cannot prove something 100 percent (Kottler and Shephard, 2015).

Science can never prove anything, prediction is imperfect, methods of collecting data are flawed,

and proof occurs in the realm of abstraction. Human perception is subjective and colored by

personal knowledge and unconscious motives (Kottler and Shephard, 2015).

Ethical and Cultural Implications of Applying Counseling Theories to Clients from a Non-

Dominant Cultural Group

The Ethics codes offer proficient standards for counselors with the intent of sheltering the well-

being and dignity of clients, and it helps counselors choose the appropriate plan of action for

their clients. Neukrug (2018) states that it is essential for counselors to understand the Ethics

Code of Conduct fully. Neukrug (2018) describes ethical mistakes can be dire, and clinicians

should be prepared to handle any ethical situations they may come up. It doesn’t matter which

approach a counselor may choose to follow they will eventually face an ethical predicament.

Joseph great post, I found it to be very interesting. I liked your viewpoint on this topic and

thought that you brought up very good points. I especially liked that you brought up the point

about Caucasian men making up the methods and they do not represent the all cultural groups.

being and dignity of clients, and it helps counselors choose the appropriate plan of action for

Megan great post, I found it to be very interesting. I liked your viewpoint on this topic and

thought that you brought up excellent points. I especially liked that your statement that

“blueprints being the beginning of a construction project, theories are the beginning of the

counseling process” I think the comparison is on point. Theory construction aids counselors in

calculating client prognosis, likely consequences of intervention, how experiences and

nonexperiences affect a client’s life, and how therapy could affect the client (Kottler & Shephard,

2015). The Ethics codes offer exceptional standards for counselors with the intent of sheltering

the well-being and dignity of clients, and it helps counselors choose the appropriate plan of

action for their clients. As counselors we will run across ethical dilemmas, but we can prepare

and keep up to date with laws and ethics so that we do not make a career ending mistake as

Neukrug explained Neukrug, E. (2018). I liked that you incorporated the tips into your

discussion post it gives an outline of how to stay diligent.
