1. Name these different types of computers. Then match the possible users below to
each type. Justify your choice.
1. F Pen-based Computer
2. B Mainframe
3. G PDA (Personal Digital Assistant)
4. A Supercomputer
5. E Portable
6. C Workstation
7. D Desktop
3. MB = Megabyte
4. GHz = Gigahertz
4. 1.7 GHz
5. 60GB
6. Microsoft Windows XP
7. A soundcard that has 64 voices and generates sounds using the wavetable system
4. Match each item in Column A with its function in Column B. Then describe its
function in two ways
1. RAM = Holds data read or written to it by the processor
9. Cache = Provides extremely fast access for sections of a program and its data
10. ROM = Holds instructions which are needed to start up the computer
5. With the help of the Glossary if necessary, describe the functions of these items.
1.Scanner = An optical input device that uses the reflection of light to copy text or graphic
into a computer
2. Printer = A common output device used for printing the output of a computer on paper
3.ATM= Common abbreviation for automatic teller machine. The type of machine used by
banks for enabling customers to withdraw money from their bank accounts.
4.PDA = Widely used as a personal organizer at first, but due to its development, it has later
increased its usefulness, such as a calculator, clock and time indicator, computer games,
internet access, e-mail receiver and sender, radio receiver, video recorder and a registrar
5.Hard Disk = A data storage device used to store and retrieve digital information using the
available discs with magnetic material.
7. Mainframe Computer = Computers with operating systems are capable of storing and
regularly accessing large-capacity libraries, then also support dozens of different
programming languages, and act on traffic when multiple programs try to access the database
9. Swipe Card = A type of card capable of storing data with iron-based small magnetic
particles on the magnetic material tape on the card. Magnetic lines, sometimes called swipe
cards or magstripe, are read by swiping the magnetic reader head.
6. The signal moves across the VDU screen from one side to the other.
8. The CPU can fetch data from memory along the data bus.
